Inspiration from Zion from Jonathan Feldstein

As the war against the Islamic Republic of Iran is into its second week, closure of airspace has stranded many both inside and outside Israel. Rescue flights of Israelis have begun, bringing home thousands a day, but estimates are that 100,000 or more are stranded overseas. Many tourists in Israel and Israelis with business overseas have left via the Taba crossing, but many are still stuck. What’s it like for Americans who are not used to the realities of war being in Israel when the war began with missiles, rockets and drones raining down on Israel, daily, several or more times a day, sending people to bomb shelters at all hours? What’s it like for Israelis to be stranded away from home, away from their families, away from the war?

My Brother’s Keeper is a beautiful novel about the family of Jesus, overlaying Christian traditions and narrative about the life of Jesus with personal stories adapted about his family. Bill Kassel is a gifted writer and communicator. His novel is written from a Catholic perspective, but is a meaningful read for Jews and Christians of all denominations. For many readers and theologians, the Old and New Testaments (Tanach and the Christian bible) feel disconnected. It’s something that has been an element driving replacement theology. They may be full of inspiration and meaning, but viewed as parallel, and often unrelated. Or, for some, the original replaced by and no longer significant. The writers of the New Testament were all observant Jews so many hints and references in their writing have clear connection to the Tanach which was the only bible they new and studied. The Echoes Bible is a new project, based on the realization that below the surface, careful investigation reveals when you read them side by side, the begin to hear “echoes” from the Old to the New. This is a groundbreaking revelation that has the ability to add dimension and meaning, as well as underscore the truth that Christianity is rooted in Judaism, something that many are still not aware of, and which still needs emphasis.

Almost 100 years since the founding of the Moslem Brotherhood, it remains one of the most influential Islamist movements in the Middle East, and one of the most dangerous in the world. Several Arab countries have banned the Brotherhood, yet they remain an existential threat. Most recently the US has banned three of its chapters, but much more needs to be done. Qatar and Turkey, two countries that have not only NOT banned the Brotherhood, but which are state outposts whose leaders and institutions embrace its ideology have not been banned. How and why does this matter? How has the Moslem Brotherhood penetrated the Middle East, and even the West? Where are the biggest threats? What can be done to remedy this?

The National Religious Broadcasters is the leading membership and advocacy group of Christians in media, in the US and around the world. Over the decades, the NRB has evolved from being primarily about radio, to new modern technologies like AI and everything in between and in all its formats. Synonymous with advocacy for Christians in media, the NRB has become a tremendous advocate for Israel and against antisemitism. The NRB has been transformed under Troy Miller, and its plans vis a vis Israel are bold and inspiring. Join the conversation here, and live at the upcoming NRB Convention.

Recently, the “Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches in Jerusalem” issued a joint statement explicitly condemning Christian Zionism as a harmful and damaging ideology. Their statement accuses local individuals who promote it of misleading public opinion, sowing confusion, and undermining the unity of the Church. The statement further states, “The Patriarchs and Heads of Churches further note with concern that these individuals have been welcomed at official levels both locally and internationally.” It's ironic that days earlier, Christian leaders throughout Israel were welcomed and celebrated by Israel’s head of state, President Herzog, at the President’s residence, hosted with honor and respect. Does this statement poke the president in the eye, and undermine the very existence of the State of Israel? Is Christian Zionism harmful and damaging? What is the theological basis of such a declaration? Why are there so many Christians who embrace Zionism, from the 19th century? Why was the statement issued now, and who is behind it? What does it mean that Zionism was singled out as problematic, but Israel was not mentioned once?

2026 will be pivotal, with a range of domestic Israeli issues influencing global issues, and global issues influencing domestic issues. Will Hamas and Hezbollah be disarmed? Will there be another round of war with Iran, or will the Islamic Republic perish? will additional Arab and Islamic countries join the Abraham accords and establish diplomatic relations with Israel? How will issues such as Netanyahu’s trial and prospective pardon, the ultra-Orthodox draft, Qatargate, and more impact the elections and how will these domestic issues be manipulated to impact or be affected by the upcoming national election? How will Jewish communities be impacted by permissive antisemitism and threats? These are just for starters. Alex Winston has his hand on the pulse and is an excellent guide though these and other issues.

It’s hard to think about much less say, but sometimes the greatest inspiration and insight can come from the greatest tragedy and loss. That’s the case with Rabbi Leo Dee, whose wife and two daughters were murdered on April 7, 2023, in a Hamas terrorist attack. Adapting his late wife Lucy’s insight, he’s learned and shared the Seven Facets of Healing. Through tragedy, he’s got a profound message. This is one that anyone who has suffered any tragedy, or anyone who knows someone who has, needs to hear.
