This week on Inspire Change is quite exciting as we welcome renowned Anthropologist and Professor Dr. Greg Downey to the podcast. Dr. Greg Downey is a teacher, writer, and anthropologist who has conducted field research in Brazil, the United States and the Pacific. He has advocated extensively for neuroanthropology — the integration of brain and cultural research to understand how humans induce variation in their own nervous system. Greg is the author of Learning Capoeira: Lessons in Cunning from an Afro-Brazilian Art(Oxford, 2005). Greg is also the co-editor, with Daniel Lende, of The Encultured Brain: An Introduction to Neuroanthropology (MIT, 2012), and co-editor with Melissa Fisher of Frontiers of Capital: Ethnographic Reflections on the New Economy (Duke, 2006).As a teacher, Greg has helped to build Macquarie University’s strength in a range of areas, especially the teaching of human diversity, evolution, psychological variation, and human rights. In 2013, he was chosen for the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence, recognition for his teaching in the Department of Anthropology and his innovative online education (through Open2Study).Greg lives in Sydney, where he’s also an avid salsa and tango dancer. Dominic Lynch lives on Sydney's Northern Beaches with his wife and 18-year-old twins. He embraces the environment in which he lives and having hung up his rugby boots after 25 years, he took up surf boat rowing and mountain biking and remains an active surf lifesaver. His professional career has seen him work in the engineering and construction industry in Australia and overseas. He is a genuine blokes’ bloke.In December 2022, Dominic received a life-changing cancer diagnosis. Not only did this have a huge impact on him and his family, but it also clearly shook those around him, particularly his male peers, to whom he had always been a pillar of strength. Despite his diagnosis and ongoing treatment, Dominic has learned to face his vulnerabilities, maintain a positive outlook on life, and to appreciate the beauty in the simple things that often pass us by in the busyness of daily life. We all have a story. Stories that touch us the most are about that moment when we make the choice to be real, to drop any pretense of pride, power and position. In that telling moment we step into a new space where our ability to overcome fear allows us to be truly authentic in our relationship to the world. In that moment we become fully human. Gunter has authored a novel Mountains of Sea published by Winterwolf Press and he self-published the non-fiction, Making Good Men Great: Surfing the New Wave of Masculinity. Both books are available at all major and independent retailers globally. The Making Good Men Great Movement also made Oprah’s #MustWatch list in 2018.
