Institut für Musik und Akustik
Das ZKM | Institut für Musik und Akustik verbindet künstlerische Arbeit mit Forschung und Entwicklung. Dabei versteht es sich als Forum des internationalen Austausches. Das Institut für Musik und Akustik ist in vielfältigen Bereichen aktiv, so veranstaltet und initiiert es zeitgenössische Konzerte, Symposien und Festivals, die eine Plattform für Musikschaffende und -interessierte bieten. Lautsprecher und Computer haben die Welt der traditionellen, instrumental-akustischen Klänge um eine neue Dimension erweitert. Das Musikinstitut ist ein Ort dieser »unerhörter« Klänge und damit auch neuer sinnlicher Erfahrungen. Am ZKM wird zeitgenössische Musik als gleichberechtigter Partner in einem Medienkunstzentrum gesehen. Das Institut für Musik und Akustik hat von Anbeginn an die experimentellen Arbeiten in der Musik als eigenständiges Feld verfolgt. In den Musikstudios und Ateliers erarbeiten Gastkünstler und Wissenschaftler akustische Produktionen. Die Projekte umfassen mit digitaler Klangsynthese, algorithmischer Komposition und Live-Elektronik bis zu Hörspiel, interaktiven Klanginstallation und audiovisuellen Produktionen eine breite Palette dessen, wozu die digitale Technologie musikalische Phantasie anregt. In der Musikwelt wird das ZKM | Institut für Musik und Akustik vor allem dafür geschätzt, dass die künstlerische Arbeit im Vordergrund steht. Die ästhetische Bandbreite der im Institut realisierten Arbeiten ist nicht auf ein Paradigma von »Neuer Musik« im Sinne des 20. Jahrhunderts beschränkt. Zwar liegen die Wurzeln der meisten Arbeiten dort, aber allgemein sieht sich das Institut als Basis für alle musikalischen Ansätze, die mit offenen Ohren neue Tendenzen und Technologien in der Musik verfolgen. Da das ZKM aus öffentlicher Hand finanziert wird, werden keine Arbeiten durchgeführt, deren Kontext bereits kommerziell verankert ist. Bei seinen Produktionen kooperiert das Institut international mit anderen ähnlichen Einrichtungen, mit Festivals, Ensembles und Rundfunkanstalten. Das institutseigene Gastkünstlerprogramm wird zusätzlich unterstützt von Stiftungen und gemeinsamen Aufträgen mit Dritten. ///
The ZKM | Institute for Music und Acoustics combines artistic work with research and development and is therefore an international forum for international discourse and exchange. By holding concerts, symposia and festivals on a regular basis it brings together composers, musicians, musicologists, music software developers and listeners interested in contemporary music. Loudspeakers and computers have added a new dimension to the world of traditional instrumental acoustic sounds. The Institute of Music and Acoustics regards itself as a place where sounds are created, which have never been heard before. Contemporary music at the ZKM is seen as an equal partner within a center for media art. From its very beginning the Institute of Music and Acoustics has pursued experimental musical works independently. Artists in Residence and software developers work on their productions in studios at the institute. With digital sound synthesis, algorithmic composition, live-electronics up to radio plays, interactive sound installations and audiovisual productions their creations cover a broad range of what digital technology can inspire the musical fantasy to. Despite the technical orientation, musical and artistic work is always put first at the ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics, which is one of the reasons it is so widely appreciated in the musical world. The aesthetic spectrum of projects realised at the Institute is not only limited to the paradigm of ›New Music‹ in the sense of the twentieth century ›Neue Musik‹. Even if the roots of many projects lay there, the Institute views itself as a base for all musical approaches which pursuit with open ears towards new tendencies and technologies in music.
