Well we spent yesterday concerned about our friends and watching the hurricane coming up the coast to North Carolina. The last prediction was that it would come right toward us but hopefully by that time it would be just a bad rain storm. But who knows. So I woke up at 3 o'clock this morning and I heard the good news. I heard nothing. So if you have about 12 minutes can I tell you the beauty about the sound of silence and then in a very unusual story about a deer woman who lost everything but made sure she had on some lipstick for the hurricane show.
Of course I was not on the radio yesterday. There were more important things to do....I was concerned with some big decisions Karen and I had to make yesterday, and then we watched as the story of the storm developed and did so as I knew that I had some very close friends right in the middle of the hit. Right where you saw all the bad stuff, they were there. I was in touch before it hit but nothing yet so far.
And as I tend to do I seek to take the events of my life and see if there is a bigger meaning and purpose somewhere and are there things that I can learn both in good times and bad. What I used to say to my students when they came with a story to talk about on the radio, "there may be a bigger story there. See if you can find it." So I confess that I am a bit on edge and trhis is some radio rambling but it just might be helpful to you... See if you can find it.
Please God help me be more human. Please God help me Be at my best. One of the problems is that in the world today, every day we will lose a bit of our humanity in some way. And unless we have significant ways to recover it every day the degradation will be come worse and worse. Untile we turn ourselves into bureaucratic machines and others into mere things. So let's start now to be aware of this, change this in ourselves, seek forgiveness, and then renew ourselves and seek to resurrect our humanity.
I wish you a happy new year and for many of you that is just exactly what you do today, and if you are like me you may be one whos chooses the their new year and maybe like me you have and you can if you wish... make this your new year.
Today on this Monday Let me seek to help you get this year, which will be a very difficult year, off to a good start by telling ou a few stories about January 1 and the God Janus. And perhaps to view the coming year as "you have some appointments to make."
And I will make it easy to begin by suggesting you watch the film Father Stu... You will be challenged among other things. And all the best,
Stan
Yes we made it to Friday and Friday is future day in which case if you are a leader you can listen, or if you want to be a leader you can listen, but if not don't listen. And we will start with a little bit of fun by asking how do the geese know who gets to go first and who gets to lead.
And then a little cowboy wisdom about the difference between humans and animals that might surprise you. It seems that in many cases animals are smarter than us. And then I confess, a bit of a rant about the state of leadership in our world today...
And then a bit of a challenge to say that to be a good leader you need to learn how to be a good sleeper. And hopefully in the new year will be able to help you do just a little bit better at that. Just 20 minutes to stir your mind and maybe give you some good ideas.
So in the next 15 minutes I'd like to talk to you about one of the most important things that you can do as we begin the new year. God wants you to learn how to sleep and how to rest and how to do nothing. And the vast majority of people like you who are motivated, on the move, and seeking to make your mark don't get enough sleep.
And because of that a lot of things go wrong and a lot of things that could be better aren't getting better. So join me as I continue my resolution for the last year or so to learn how to get really good at doing nothing. One of my favorite expressions I say to my wife is, "I love you, Goodnight I'm going to bed now."
So please join me for some talking to my self reflections and perhaps a challenge to you as we seek to remind ourselves and maybe learn for the first time that we need to take our resting a lot more seriously than we have in the past.
The video of what happened to Don Lemon has gone viral and actually in the world of radio that I was trained in, such a stupid stuff statement would've got you fired immediately. But this is a world in which mediocrity is not only tolerated but often celebrated. I have often said that the people on radio and television should not be there full-time job.
To be on the radio and television would be an honor for those people were truly good people and good at what they do and they do it for others not for themselves. Also have to have another job. They would have to go out and do things like you and I have to do and they would have to do them well.
So may I challenge you to challenge the arrogant professional media punditry that is all around us by making a point of you doing your job well and at the same time, learn how to share your wisdom insight truth and faithfulness to God and others on the radio. That's why we call our programs and our company What it Takes Radio. We do what it takes to get you and your message and your story and your good cause on the radio.
I love the old prayer that I learned from novelist Robertson Davies, "Oh dear lord don't let me die stupid." Well unfortunately a lot of people are going to do that, but hopefully not you. As I have said for the last few days it's time to celebrate the coming new year which occurs next week.
So may I ask you one of my favorite questions, are you serious? And your response might be about what. And my response would be tell me what the things are that you are serious about. And are you serious about the important things.
And indeed it may be time to be serious about dealing with your death that may happen this year. Nothing morbid, in fact it's quite liberating and I think you'll find it and also a bit challenging. Give me 15 minutes and both of us will be smarter and brighter for it,
Yes, Think Yiddish and Dress British. That's what a dear friend and former client used to say to me and there's a great story and a great truth behind that statement. And so since it's somewhat goes along with the story of the day which was the queens funeral I would like your permission to tell it to you today ... And then as one of those persons whose mind goes in incredibly random ways I think I can connect it to the event of the day which is the funeral service of Queen Elizabeth II.
Most of you saw it in some way or at least some excerpts from it, and maybe you were like me, I always try to learn something from everything I see read, do and experience. There's something to learn in everything. And often they are interesting ideas.
So if you'll give me 20 minutes on this Monday evening, please relax and let me tell you a few of my stories. And then you respond by telling me some of yours. OK?
and especially if you are a grandfather, it's time for you to take your grandson and you should go together to learn what the man of the west did in life and how they treated the women they liked and loved.
How to always tip your hat to the ladies and perhaps to get a grown-up view of life, get your own hat and belt buckle and perhaps feel what it's like to leave being a boy and becoming a man.
And it's time to just not take a vacation and see the sites, play the games and see the sports. It's time to take a family adventure and in this program I'm gonna challenge you to do just that. Are you up to the challenge/
