On this week's show we'll be hearing two interviews that were recorded at our latest live show at the Waypost on North Williams with organizations that encourage and empower young people to become all they can be. In the second half of the show we have a conversation with Elizabeth Nye of Girls Inc of the Pacific Northwest -- an organization that was built on the foundation of over a century of history of Girls Clubs that has evolved to become a place that inspires girls, ages 6-18, to be strong, smart, and bold with gender-specific programs that provide girls with the confidence and self-esteem to access a bright and economically-independent future.

Up first though Phil Busse spoke with Dr. Phil Marshall about Oregon Crusaders -- the Pacific Northwest's premiere drum and bugle corps. They are an organization with roots tracing back to 1971 that gives young people an opportunity to gain an education in a powerful, althletic and aritistic performance medium and present their works to audiences around the country such as on their current 14,000 mile tour.

In the second half of the program Phil Busse speaks with two members, Megan McGeorge and Evan 'Rabble' Henshaw Plath, of the organization Awesome Portland which is not officially a nonprofit but instead a group of trustees that comes together every other month to evaluate proposals from artists, musicians, environmentalists, social justice activists, technoligists and all manner of Portland dreamers who have ideas about how to make the place we live even better. They hold a live event party where applicants make the pitch for their idea and at the end of the night award the grant winner a thousand dollars cash to make their dream a reality.

This nonprofit has a unique funding model based on the federal mandate that cable television providers deliver content that serves their local community and is responsible for operating the numerous community access stations we have in Portland and the content they provide. PCM's Justen Harn tells us about his background prior to coming to his current post and how that impacted his experience, the history and goals of Portland Community Media and plans for how they hope to leverage emerging media technologies to bring the organization into the future.

In this Nonprofit Hour show we'll be hearing about a couple of nonprofits that are long established ones in the Portland area who are doing tremendously important work for people in vulnerable populations and doing it in a way that maintains their clients dignity and self worth. In the first half of the show Phil Busse spoke at our latest live recording event with Elise Downing of Sisters of the Road - a homeless support and advocacy group that has been operating in our city since 1979. It's been such a long standing foundation in our community that there's even a song written about them which we'll hear about during their interview.

In the second half of the show we will learn about Rosehaven an organization that is approaching 20 years of serving women and children experiencing the trauma of abuse, loss of home and other disruptive life challenges. We were joined in our studio by their Executive Director, Rebekah Albert to took us through the history of Rosehaven and painted a picture of the experiences their guests have faced and how they created a safe, respectful community with support and services to assist the women and children in regaining stability in their lives.
