In 1978 Gary Thuerk, a marketing manager for Digital Equipment Corporation, needed to send a message to potential clients. Instead of sending each person a message one at a time, he had his assistant write one single mass email. Spam email was born.

Around the world member states of the World Health Organization observe “World No Tobacco Day”. In 1621 the ship The Mayflower made its return voyage to England after transporting the Pilgrims to “The New World”. Of the 102 passengers and 30 crew, only 53 passengers and 15 crew survived the trip and first winter. In 845, a fleet of 120 Viking ships, containing more than 5,000 men, traveled down the river Seine and attacked Paris, France. Host Mike Hover (@hoverdrive) talks with the Viking Chieftain Ragnar (Darrell Monti @darrelljmonti) and they discuss battle strategy, the siege of Paris, and the huge ransom they got from Charles the Bald for leaving.

On this day in 1921, one of the most influential comedic television writers was born, Madelyn Pugh. You might not recognize the name, but you know the show she wrote for, “I Love Lucy”. In 1936 the Daytona Beach and Road Course held its first oval stock car race. Thousands attended the 3.2 mile course and eleven years later, NASCAR was formed at the nearby Streamline Hotel.
