    Lightning Round

    1. What is one fun fact about you that not that many people know?

I have almost 20 plants and they’re all named and I love them very, very much. The most recent addition to the plant family is Keith and Keith, is this like a luscious green philodendron and he looks amazing.

    2. Who inspires you the most and why?

My parents have been really amazing role models to me, especially financially.  I wouldn’t be able to do this, had I not had that guidance.  As far as someone, I don’t know, or someone famous Elizabeth Gilbert’s work has been hugely impactful in my life.

For those of you who are not familiar, she wrote Eat, Pray, Love among other things, but I’ve seen her speak twice. Her work has been so, so impactful in the way I see the world in the way I coach. And yeah, she’s amazing.

    3. What books are you reading now or have read and loved that you’d recommend?

Provenance: How a Con Man and a Forger Rewrote the History of Modern Art by Aly Sujo and Laney Salisbury

    4. What is one actionable tip or piece of advice that you can tell our moms out there to help them on their financial independence journey?

I would say automate your savings.

That’s my number one thing. I want you to take away that that you can start changing your financial life completely on autopilot just by saying, okay, I want 5% of my paycheck or $500 automatically put into savings. So you don’t have to think about it and you don’t have to worry about it.

It’s just going to grow automatically.

        Key Take-Aways
        • Step 1: Take inventory of your loans. You can put it in a spreadsheet to lay it out.
        • Step 2: Kim paid off all of the accrued interest first so she knew that going forward, all of her payments, even if they were small, would be going towards principal on these loans.
        • Step 3: Then she paid off all of the unsubsidized loans with the highest interest rates.
        • Step 5: Kim paid off all of the unsubsidized loans with the lowest interest rates next.
        • Step 6: Kim paid off the subsidized loans with the highest rates.
        • Step 7: Kim finally paid off the subsidized loans with the lowest interest rates.
        • Lightning Round

          1. What is one fun fact about you that not that many people know?

The veins on the side of my right foot spell my name.

          2. Who inspires you the most and why?

I don’t have gurus, but my kids inspire me to be better because I don’t want to let them down or limit their future.

          3. What books are you reading now or have read and loved that you’d recommend?

          4. What is one actionable tip or piece of advice that you can tell our moms out there to help them on their financial independence journey?

Systematize your life girl! You have to take stuff off of your plate that you don’t need to waste time on. But just like paying off student loans and how we manage the household finances, it doesn’t matter how much money you’re putting away. It just matters that you’ve started to put it away and that you’ve built in automated systems that work for your life to guarantee that you’re going to be contributing the 1% or the 2% to whatever it is that keeps you moving forward.

              Key Take-Aways
              • It’s not an overnight process. It’s consistency over time, that leads to the results that we want.
              • If you want to try something new, you won’t really know how it is until you really dive in.
              • Just go for it because you won’t really find your way until you do, and learning from those experiences is invaluable.
              • Why did I fail? For two reasons: 1. I wasn’t consistent and I didn’t make enough time for it. It was a passion in the moment thing. 2. The long-term goal of the business didn’t line up with my long-term values of passive income. For example, I would have to work on the weekends and I didn’t really want to do that at that point in my life.
              • Lightning Round

                1. What is one fun fact about you that not that many people know?

                I’m half Turkish.

                2. Who inspires you the most and why?

My husband because he’s such a hard worker. He’s a chiropractor and he’s helped so many people in just one day alone. I’m really inspired by him to keep working even harder so that we can spend more time together as a family.

                4. What is one actionable tip or piece of advice that you can tell our moms out there to help them on their financial independence journey?

Be consistent and don’t give up. Even if you have days where it seems like you’re not gaining much traction, try to remember the long-term goal and why you’re doing it in the first place. Make an impact with what you’re doing and the income will come.

                  Key Take-Aways
                  •  Keep your eyes open when you’re buying or selling anything big (I.e. business, real estate, etc.) Understand all of the extra charges that are coming your way, that you may not be aware of.
                  • When you do get a heavy money blow in life, it’s not the end of the world. You have to think about it as “Hey, everything in life is okay. It’s not a serious illness. This is okay. Money comes and goes so this is recoverable.
                  • If you’re thinking about starting a business the first thing you should do is think about what you need in order to start a business and what you don’t have.
                  • Next, think about how you can get it.
                  • Often people think they don’t have the money, the knowledge, the information, or the experience, but there are a lot of people around us who have each of those things. We just don’t believe that we can ask. We don’t believe that we can make use of those resources because they don’t belong to us. At the end of the day, those beliefs will fundamentally prevent you from taking action to start a business.

                    Lightning Round

                    1. What is one fun fact about you that not that many people know?

My parents were first cousins. They came from a different time culture and era. I grew up in Egypt and have a big family. When my father was looking for someone, he had his eye on my mother. They thought it was a great idea because they both came from a good family.

                    2. Who inspires you the most and why?

My parents. My dad was an entrepreneur who grew a massive business. He was very successful and ended up helping a lot of people as a result. My mom was only high school educated and came from Egypt straight to Montreal with two kids. At the time, I wasn’t one of them. I came later on in the scene and she decided she wanted to go get a job. She barely spoke English but still went to work in a bank as a secretary. She could barely type, but they gave her the job anyway. She was very determined and she worked her way up to becoming a bank manager. They were both very driven individuals who always made family come first, and had a spirit for life.

                    3. What books are you reading now or have read and loved that you’d recommend?

                    4. What is one actionable tip or piece of advice that you can tell our moms out there to help them on their financial independence journey?

I’m going to give you a journaling prompt. Right before you go do anything, think about how you’re thinking about things, because the way you think about anything will determine how things unfold. That’s the law. So take a piece of paper and a pen and write down these questions. What do I really, really want?

That’s question number one, and I have two really’s in there on purpose. Think about what you really want, not what your spouse wants, not what your mother wants, not what your kids want, not what your neighbors want, or what you think you should want. What do you truly deeply personally want? The second question is, so what’s stopping me from having it?

Write down all the reasons, “oh, you know, I’m tired. I have kids, I have responsibilities. I have no money.” Write all of those reasons down and start to understand that they are a function that comes from your beliefs. Those things need to be addressed and challenged before you take action.

                      Bio

Bobby: Bobby started a personal finance blog called Millennial Money Man back in 2015 after paying off $40,000 of student loan debt on his teaching salary. He then foolishly quit his teaching job after making $3 from his website, realized he needed to make money quickly, started providing digital marketing services for local small businesses, and continued to grow his website.

Fast forward to now, and he’s still a professional blogger (yes, it’s a real thing), and has had millions of loyal readers come to his website over the years. He’s also a Forbes contributor and has been featured in CNBC, Yahoo Finance, Forbes, Business Insider, and a whole bunch of other fancy media outlets. As you can tell, he thinks highly of himself (but in a very humble and likable way).

Mike: Mike is a recovering attorney, Aggie, and all-around digital marketing badass. After starting an online fitness coaching on the side during law school, Mike started running Facebook ads for himself to bring in more clients. He quickly realized that he was a ninja master at running Facebook ads, and other people started to pay him to run theirs too. He ditched the fitness business, decided being a lawyer was overrated, fell in love with wine, and went on to grow a multi-six figure per year Facebook ad agency. Oh, and he did all of that as a stay-at-home dad to three small humans. (Between you and me, I’m pretty sure they are robot children)

                      Key Take-Aways
                      • When selecting a side hustle look through the lens of upfront cost, time commitment, income potential, how quickly you can make money or high leverage, and flexibility.
                      • One of the ways to be successful with having a business and kids is to not care and involve them when you need to. If they interrupt when we are recording a podcast then so be it. We are not ashamed of kids being involved in our work.
                      • Imposter syndrome is real. It’s a hard thing to battle with. It doesn’t ever go away. But it’s just like being a parent. One day you weren’t a mom and the next day you had a baby and you didn’t have a dang clue what you were supposed to do, but you figured it out little by little and you screwed things up and you kept trying because you gotta keep little thing alive and happy.
                      • Lightning Round

                        1. What is one fun fact about you that not that many people know?

Bobby: People think that I’m extroverted and I am not at all. I hate going outside, but I hate talking to people generally if I can avoid it just because it’s, I’m just very introverted.

Mike: I never went through puberty and still do not grow facial hair.

                        2. Who inspires you the most and why?

Bobby: One of the very fortunate things about my businesses is that I’ve had a front-row seat to a lot of people changing their lives in a lot of different ways. I’m not just talking about running Facebook ads and all that kind of stuff. I’ve been able to watch people completely change over the five going on six years that I’ve been running Millennial Money Man it’s just people come into either the website or communities that I run or, or whatever and they feel they can’t do something. Then you just see them kind of evolve and become completely different people over the years. The same thing happened for me, I never thought that I would be at the point where I am now, owning multiple businesses and I’m doing pretty well in business.

Mike: This is hard because I’m not a rah-rah person. I don’t watch motivational videos or read biographies or anything like that. I mean, it’s funny. That’s very internal. I’m very internally motivated. If somebody ticks me off that motivates the heck out of me. If I feel slighted by another business owner, I see somebody passing us on something. I’m like, it’s crushed.

                        3. What books are you reading now or have read and loved that you’d recommend?

Bobby: Company of One by Paul Jarvis

Mike: The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan

                        4. What is one actionable tip or piece of advice that you can tell our moms out there to help them on their financial independence journey?

Bobby:  Start today. I mean it, start today.  Everybody has some kind of goal that they’ve wanted, but they keep pushing it off. You have to start at some point and you have to jump in. If you don’t, you’re going to be upset with yourself later. The other tip, perfection is a form of procrastination. You probably shouldn’t pride yourself on that because it is a very clever way of putting things off.

Mike: You should start something, You should start a side hustle and it doesn’t have to be long-term, but do something for a little while because the best way to achieve your financial goals is not to cut out every single little thing. You can do that, but you can achieve your financial goals so much faster by accelerating your ability to reach them by adding an influx of cash. I would say just from my experience, you never know what will happen.

                          Key Take-Aways
                          • If hiring a financial advisor ask them how they earn their money and their attitude to overtrading. Ask them how they charge and their compensation structure.
                          • Assets under management- where you’re charged a percentage of the assets under management. The bigger account, the more, you will pay in fees. Financial advisors like this model because they can make more money for what they can bring in under management.
                          • Fee only- where you just pay the experts a set amount for his or her expertise to solve your particular requirements, independent of the size of your account. This way you don’t get penalized for being a great investor and investing over the long run.
                          • Fiduciary-is a person who holds a legal or ethical relationship of trust with somebody else. When somebody acts as a fiduciary for you, they are acting in your best interests.
                          • Fees matter. The lower the fees, the better.
                          • Investing in the stock market, doesn’t have to be intimidating. You don’t need to be a stock or options expert or any other sophisticated type of trading to do well. you can do just as well.
                          • Invest in a total broad index fund, whether it’s your country’s total stock market or international.
                          • Start investing early, invest for the long term and invest broadly so your spreading your risk around. It’s as simple as that.
                          • When my daughter was around 5 years old, I purchased shares for her in a company that makes consumer goods. When we would go shopping I would show her the label on different products and told her she will make money when people buy this because she was part owner and some of the money would go to her.She would look at the back of every single product and say, “Oh daddy we can’t buy this one. It’s not made by company X” Even though she was five, she intuitively got that.
                          • Make teaching your kids about money fun. Try to gamify it so that they at least start understanding how the world is set up.
                          • If you have a teenager who is demanding the latest expensive phone, instead of buying them the phone, buy shares in the company that makes it because over a few years, that investment might grow to such a level that they can buy five phones or a phone and a computer.

                            I obsessively like 1980’s music.

                            2. Who inspires you the most and why?

My mother because she came from a place of nothing, but  never made it known to me that we might be inferior or are were starting from a negative or a smaller place. Even now she’s in her seventies, but she has a very positive outlook.

Look at where your spends are and ask yourself, do I need this now? If the answer is no, put that money aside and even $5 here and there will add up. What you’re doing by saving now is you’re paying your future self. Sacrifice now because you may not need it and treat your future self, to a relaxing life.

One business coach has forged his approach to helping entrepreneurs and business executives by using a monumental personal failure and eventual redemption to help get others where they need to go to find their personal success and fulfillment.

At just 18 years old, Miha Matlievski, a Slovenian high school dropout, dreamed of becoming a successful entrepreneur. And he pursued it with a passion, putting in 12 years of hard work that resulted in four successful businesses and a personal net worth of $15M.

But in December 2009, an unexpected call from his bank, which had decided to foreclose on his real estate investments, brought his world crashing down around him. That one negative event instigated an avalanche of ruin for him and his businesses, resulting in his four, once-successful companies going bankrupt.

Embracing that previous failure, Miha began to climb out of his rut and take charge of his own life once again. In 2014, he created a new startup, generating eight figures in less than a year. Many publications in Slovenia approached him and his story went viral.

Since Miha’s “resurrection,” he has been known as The Fail Coach. In that capacity, he helps entrepreneurs around the world embrace and has a healthy relationship with failure with the goal of reaching a higher level of success.

                              Key Take-Aways
                              • There is no such thing as not failing in the process of building your business and achieving success. You will fail a lot more than you will succeed, but those successes will make up for all the failures and add some. So it’s very important that you develop a healthy relationship with failure, and when I say a healthy relationship with failure, I mean, you must not let emotions get you down.
                              • The second thing is the foundation is everything. Some of the foundations include processes, KPIs benchmarking, measuring your processes clear brand story, who you are, what you’re doing,  what do you stand for company culture, and hiring process to name a few.
                              • Third, when it comes to building a business, two things are super key. The first thing is a lot of entrepreneurs do is start making a logo and, and things like that. The first thing that you need is a validated product-market fit.  Without that, you don’t have anything. Validation means people will buy your product or service at full price.
                              • Fourth, a product-market fit is comprised of three things that need to come together: an audience that will buy from you; a product that solves something or brings them something, bridges a gap between a struggle and a desire; and the business model that is profitable for you.
                              • Fifth, if you are about to create something, create something that’s close to your heart because it’s so much easier to overcome the little struggles when you’re doing something your love.
                              • Success won’t be overnight. If you are more of an introvert and have an intimate group of maybe five, 10 friends, that’s not enough. You will have to push yourself a little bit out there and start meeting with people.  Networking and leveraging relationships will help you quickly scale your business.

                                1. What is one fun fact about you that not that many people know?

Many years ago, the only sound investment that I ever made in that past life before failure was before Gordon Ramsey was famous. I had three weeks of coaching on cooking and that was the best experience of that part of my life and the only smart investment I made.

                                2. Who inspires you the most and why?

There are so many people who’ve inspired me in many different ways. One person that I take a lot of knowledge from is Albert Einstein. A few years ago I came across the quote “Don’t just be a man of success, rather be a man of value.” That’s the only quote that stuck in my head and every single day, there’s at least one thing that I do where I bring value to others. I really live it every single day. It’s my new year’s resolution, my everyday resolution. If I don’t do anything else, every single day I make sure I bring value to other people.

                                4. What is one actionable tip or piece of advice that you can tell our moms out there to help them on their financial independence journey?

Write it down and be mindful about how you manage your money. Maybe,  create a few different bank accounts and split up your money into different buckets and so on. Often, it’s not the big things that we buy that get us into debt.  It’s all those little things that we don’t even notice. Five bucks here, $10 here, $20 here, but they accumulate to a lot. Make it a habit that before you spend something, you put it in the notebook. It will make you rethink whether you really need to make that purchase.
