This month is Mental Health Awareness Month and we are talking with filmmakers, Janell and Malik about their film tapping on mental health in the Black Community, Love Conquers All. Statistics show, serious mental illness rose among all ages of Black and African American people between 2008 and 2020.

The film is about a young man battling the traumas of his past and present, and the ways in which relationships aid his healing. Given that the film has a mental health focus, we will have a panel of BIPOC health professionals and entrepreneurs discussing different aspects of mental health prior to the film’s showing (e.g. definitions, stigmas, community resources, their own experiences). There will also be live musical performances and live art!

Today we are talking with Houston native Linda A. Anukwuem about her transition from a corporate payroll analyst to launching her international consulting firm. Linda shares how online presence can impact potential sponsors and the do's and don'ts while starting your business.

Linda A. Anukwuem  is an energetic go getter and an advocate for change.  She was born in the United States to Nigerian parents, and raised in Houston, TX. She attended the University of Houston, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. In her professional career, she worked as an accountant with Bracewell & Guiliani, LLP and United Airlines.

Linda served as the Chair for the City of Houston’s Mayor’s International Trade & Development Council for Africa (MITDC-Africa) under Mayor Annise Parker as well as chaired the Arts, Culture and Community Relations Committee; she is a working and hands on leader. MITDC-Africa was a liaison to expand the constructive dialogue between Houston’s International business community and the City government, and to jointly identify opportunities to promote the city of Houston globally, economically, educationally and its tourism. Linda has facilitated Business-to-Business networks that support the continued development of Africa. She has chaired numerous projects and events in the Houston African and international communities both locally and abroad. In addition, she participated with Sheriff Ed Gonzales transition committee regarding community relations to bridge the gap with communities in Harris County.

Ms. Linda is familiar with projects that promote the exchange of best practices for the international community. Under WeLead, an organization that focuses on community building in Africa through cultural awareness and involvement of youth and women allowed her to create a platform for international exchange supporting trade and the exchange of best practices. Her public relations experience has allowed her to gain knowledge regarding relationship building with key partners and become comfortable with managing special events. In the past, she facilitated key partnerships as an independent consultant for the Nigeria Content Investment Forum held during the well-known Offshore Technology Conference week in Houston, Texas. The work entailed managing the project from start to finish and establishing an effective system to support efforts for international trade. In addition, she has worked to support the financial infrastructure of corporate organizations. Possessing more than 10 years of experience of working in diverse financial and accounting positions. The key competencies include, but are not limited to, maintaining financial records, bank reconciliations, managing budgets and financial analysis. She has gained an understanding of accounting software and effective in explaining complex information in a comprehensible manner.

Linda’s passion and love for the African and international community inspired her to seek for an avenue to create opportunities for future leadership. Consequently, she is the founder and co-director of WeLead, an organization developed to empower young people and women for future leadership. As a community advocate for the African community, she has also become a community leader representing the Nigerian community in Houston. Because of Linda’s hard work and professional acumen, she was featured in the eighth edition of Who’s Who in Black Houston.

Today we are talking with the beautiful Deborah Ware as she explains how age ain't nothing but a number and get inspired to get up and do all the things you have ever wanted to do. Breaking chains starts today. 

Meet 13th and Joan author Deborah Ware. Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, Deborah is a mother of three sons, a grandmother of 8 , and wife to retired army Sergeant John Ware. Deborah is a fifth-grade English Language Arts teacher in Gwinnett County who is a natural at creating stories and songs. This is demonstrated in her first book, “Breaking Chains.” Aside from being a teacher and author, Deborah is a singer/songwriter, inspirational encourager, and believer that beauty is not only on the outside but also on the inside.

Deborah loves to dream and use her dreams to inspire others who struggle with self-confidence. Her goal is to encourage older women to believe in themselves and to pursue their dreams, while recognizing the fact that, with age, life is not over; instead, it's more vibrant and just beginning!

This Women's History Month, we are learning more about the life and legacy of Ida B. Wells with her great-granddaughter, Michelle Duster. We discuss how Black Women must be active politically to continue change and continue increasing our wealth. 

Bios and Awards

Michelle Duster has worked for over 30 years in various mediums to highlight the positive contributions of women and African Americans to the United States. She has written, edited or contributed to numerous articles and over a dozen books, plus worked on monuments, markers, murals, statues, documentary films, and film festivals -- all to tell stories that have frequently been omitted, skewed or marginalized. She is determined to help current and future generations be exposed to and inspired by more inclusive and truthful representation. Her most recent books about her great-grandmother Ida B. Wells are the picture book, Ida B. Wells, Voice of Truth and the adult book Ida B. the Queen. She also co-edited the anthologies Impact: Personal Portraits of Activism and Michelle Obama’s Impact on African American Women and Girls.

Michelle Duster is an author, professor, public historian, and champion of racial and gender equity. She has written, edited, or contributed to over a dozen books.  Her most recent is the picture book, Ida B. Wells, Voice of Truth (January 4, 2022) which followed Ida B the Queen: The Extraordinary Life and Legacy of Ida B. Wells - released in January 2021.

She also co-wrote the popular children’s history book, Tate and His Historic Dream; co-edited Impact: Personal Portraits of Activism; Shifts: An Anthology of Women’s Growth Through Change; Michelle Obama’s Impact on African American Women and Girls; and edited two books that include the writings of her paternal great-grandmother, Ida B. Wells. She has written articles for Ms. Magazine, TIME, Essence, HuffPost, Teen Vogue, People, Glamour, Daily Beast, and the North Star. She has appeared on MSNBC, CNN, WTTW, CBS & CW as well as numerous radio shows.

Her advocacy has led to street names, monuments, historical markers, murals, statues, and other public history projects that highlight women and African Americans, including Wells. She is working on several other projects that celebrate trailblazers, including the picture book, You Dared which will be published in 2024.
