With the arrival of another 120 linesmen today the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) will greatly improve their ability to restore power to more storm ravaged areas.   

Energy Minister Daryl Vaz has again relayed the commitment of the JPS that effort is being made to have 90% restoration by the end of this month and 100% by the end of January.

The Tourism Housing Assistance Recovery Programme (THARP) which was officially launched yesterday is intended to support about 5000 workers whose homes were damaged by hurricane Melissa.

Speaking at the launch, Tourism Minister, Edmund Bartlett said the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) has allocated $70 million to provide housing vouchers valued at $100,000 to each worker.

Upset students of the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) in Portland, staged a protest today, following reports that a female student was allegedly raped. The placard bearing students called on school administrators to implement better security measures, pointing out that the security in place is ineffective.

The call from sSokesperson on Energy, Phillip Paulwell, follows the announcement by the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) yesterday. The OUR said the adjustment was anticipated, as JPS had to rely on more expensive fuel sources for generation, because natural gas was unavailable in the period leading up to, and immediately after, Hurricane Melissa.
