Presidio has announced the appointment of Bríd Graham as Senior Vice President (SVP) of Presidio Europe and APAC. This latest appointment will see Bríd assume overall leadership for the Presidio business that operates out of its Dublin based operation, where it currently employs over 300 people.

In her new role as Senior Vice President at Presidio, Bríd will be responsible for building Presidio’s offering to its customers where the business now provides a full spectrum of IT services and solutions, including digital infrastructure, cloud and cybersecurity. Under Bríd’s leadership, the Irish operation is set to become the strategic hub to support Presidio’s international expansion outside of the US, with particular emphasis on growth in Europe and Asia Pacific.

Bríd takes on her new role having served for the past two years as managing director of the Product Procurement division led out of Ireland. A key member of the management team of IT services company Arkphire before being acquired last year by Presidio, Bríd played a central role in the success of the Arkphire business, growing the business’ multinational client base both in Ireland and internationally. Bríd originally joined the Arkphire business in 2011 as an account manager for enterprise customers having previously worked in a similar role with IT business EDS.

Bríd’s appointment now sees her take over from Paschal Naylor, former CEO and co-founder at Arkphire, who is retiring from his executive role after more than 40 years in the business. Paschal has been appointed to an advisory role where he can continue to provide his guidance and support to the business.

Commenting on the appointments, Bob Cagnazzi, Chief Executive Officer of Presidio said: “Supporting our multinational clients and growing internationally is a key priority for Presidio, and we are thrilled to have Bríd bring her talent and passion for providing the best possible customer experiences to this strategically important leadership role.”

He added: “The Arkphire business, now known as Presidio Europe is providing us with the ideal platform from which to grow out our international presence. Huge credit goes to the exceptional contribution of Paschal as co-founder of Arkphire for his foresight and hard work in building a great business. We are delighted to have Paschal’s continuity with the business and look forward to working with him in his new role.”

Commenting on her new appointment, Bríd Graham said: “I look forward to working with Bob and the rest of the Presidio team in building the Presidio brand internationally and bringing the full breadth of our IT offerings and expertise to our global customer base.”

Originally from Portlaoise, Bríd holds Postgraduate Diplomas in both International Sales and Marketing and Marketing Management as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree from University College Dublin.

Last year, Presidio acquired Arkphire, the Irish owned and headquartered IT solutions and managed services company. The Irish operation has now been rebranded to ‘Presidio’ and operates as a fully integrated part of Presidio’s $3.1 billion business.

Students from St Colman’s College in Cork were crowned as ‘Medtronic National Champions’ at the finals of this year’s F1 in Schools Ireland competition.

The team fought off intense competition from over 60 other teams representing secondary schools around the country during the day-long event in Salthill, Galway. The podium was completed by Catalyst Racing and Kronos Racing from Marist College Athlone and Gonzaga College, Dublin respectively.

Medtronic National Champions and F1 in Schools

Students from St Colman’s College in Cork were celebrating as Adventum Racing. The winning students will now progress to represent Ireland at the 2022 F1 in Schools World Finals later this year. Commenting on Adventum Racing’s win was Team Manager, Fionn O’Connell:

“We are absolutely delighted to be named National Champions. We learned so much as a team over the past 9 months of working together, and now we can’t wait to represent Ireland at the World Finals!”

On hand to award the CJJ Motorsports Cup to the winners was Damien Joyce, Engineering Director at Medtronic, title sponsors of F1 in Schools Ireland. Commenting on this year’s competition, he said:

“Medtronic is delighted to partner with F1 in Schools again this year and are particularly proud to host this year’s national finals in Galway. Developing a diverse pipeline of talent for Medtronic is a priority for us. We value the focus that F1 in Schools places on key competencies like design, manufacturing, strategy and critical thinking while honing IT, communication and finance skills. Congratulations to the National champions Adventum Racing and all other teams involved”

Alongside the overall winners, Donal McDermott from Marist College Athlone was named winner of the Meta Engineer of the Future Award. The award is designed to highlight the technical work and achievements of a student during the competition. The judging process included interviews with F1 in Schools Ireland and Meta to discuss their participation in the programme.

Speaking about the Award, Aoife Flynn, Head of Community Development at Meta’s Clonee Data Centre said: “We are delighted to award the Meta Engineer of the Future Award to Donal, whose participation in F1 in Schools Ireland has been outstanding. He has demonstrated excellent technical and engineering skills, teamwork and creativity. At Meta, building new and innovative technology is at our core. Supporting programmes such as F1 in Schools invests in and inspires emerging engineers of the future. We look forward to continuing this partnership and supporting students’ growth in STEM.”

F1 in Schools will begin enrolling students for the 2022/23 season in September 2022. Aaron Hannon, Chairperson of F1 in Schools Ireland, is calling on schools to enter next year’s challenge:

“F1 in Schools is a great opportunity for second-level students to dip their toes into the world of business, leadership, engineering, science and technology before deciding what direction they want to take after they’ve finished secondary school. This year, we have had a fantastic competition where students have had the opportunity to learn new skills and meet like-minded people. We’re calling on more schools, teachers and parents to apply and get young people involved next year. F1 in Schools opens many doors for our participants, including a once in a lifetime opportunity to represent Ireland at the F1 in Schools World Finals and meet some of the stars of the F1 world.”

F1 in Schools is a global STEM competition that challenges students to design, build and race their very own miniature Formula One Car. The competition, now in its 16th year in Ireland, encourages students to consider careers in STEM, and focuses on magnifying the appeal of roles in STEM fields using the magnetic appeal of Formula One. Teaching skills such as computer-aided design and 3D Printing, the competition enrolled over 700 students for the 2021/22 season.

Expanding the target audience and improved liquidity are rated as the most important benefits from tokenisation.

More than four in five fund managers (83%) agree that they can leverage blockchain technology to grow their markets as financial services become more transparent, new global research from digital assets marketplace Token City shows.

The study, conducted among fund managers in France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, and the UK who are responsible for around $546.5 billion in assets under management, found widespread support for the use of tokenisation from asset managers.

Tokenisation Market

The research by Token City, which provides the platform infrastructure and services for issuing, managing, and trading Security Tokens by investors, investment funds, portfolios, brokers, and other investment service companies, identified the main benefits that could be obtained from fund managers through the tokenisation of their funds and investments.

Madrid-based Token City’s research found that increased liquidity and expanding the target audience were rated as the most important benefits of tokenisation for fund managers, followed by upgraded infrastructure, reduced settlement times and lower costs for reconciliation in securities trading.

Other benefits identified during the research include advantages in asset-liability risk management and collateral management. Nearly half (45%) of fund managers strongly agree that tokenisation of assets will improve the ability to manage asset-liability risk in the future and a further 38% slightly agreed. Likewise, 82% strongly or slightly agreed that, as tokenisation expands the range of assets for collateral, it significantly expands the options available in the market and should make collateral management more efficient and transparent.

Token City says most professional fund managers who are testing the market have still very small levels of exposure to Security Tokens as they are investigating the market in terms of how it works, its infrastructure and liquidity.

However, the World Economic Forum estimates that up to 10 per cent of global GDP will be stored and transacted via DLT by 2027 – tokenized markets could potentially be worth as much as USD24 trillion by 2027, highlighting the growing momentum.

Token City founder and CEO Yael H. Oaknin said: “The tokenisation market is at an early stage of development, but it is clear that fund managers are engaging with the potential benefits and are identifying how they can make the most from the market.”

I was recently asked to provide some feedback to researchers presenting their projects.

My overall impression was as follows:

Why must the slide take up the whole screen with the presenter in the top corner, the size of a postage stamp?

Universities, in particular, use dreadful communication platforms to host their researchers/student engagement with the outside world.

It’s evident to me that ‘People buy people, not Slides’ yet years after the development of platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams, to name but a few, we are still left struggling to see the presenter, never mind engage with them.

I believe there are three purposes for a presentation;

Inform the minds

Change the will

Touch the heart

(All three should have an element of entertainment if you wish to be successful)

IDEALLY THE PREPARATION SHOULD START AS FOLLOWS:

Choose which purpose applies to you and your audience. 2. Research the audience. Who is the person you most want to influence? 3. Create a story(s) and tell it in a way that is believable and builds trust in you and your idea. 4. Then, and only then, should you go about selecting images and creating the slide deck?

I believe a presentation should be an exciting conversation delivered with energy and enthusiasm and supported by some imaginative visual slides with a minimum of text.

Datapac, Ireland’s leading technology solutions and services provider, has announced it has delivered a complete digital transformation solution to Sheil Kinnear, one of the longest-established accountancy practices in the country.

All employee desktops now run in the cloud using Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop, and are securely accessed through thin clients. These small and portable cloud-based devices offer the same Windows desktop experience and can run from anywhere, enabling secure access to data, even on client site. This digital transformation of Sheil Kinnear’s business has resulted in significant cost savings for the company as the need for hardware upgrades and maintenance has been reduced.

Datapac also refreshed Sheil Kinnear’s security posture with cloud-based and on-premise firewalls, and has secured company data with cloud-based backups to prevent information loss and ensure business continuity for the company. The Datapac solution also backs up data on Microsoft Office365 including Mail, Teams, and Sharepoint.

Additionally, employee onboarding and training has been made simpler with all information available from a single cloud source.

Refurbed, Europe’s fastest growing online marketplace for refurbished electronic devices, has today announced the Irish launch of its line of refurbished video game consoles. Customers can view the range of models on the company’s website, which includes both newer and classic, much loved video game consoles such as the Super Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox.

Refurbed have found that already 1 in 4 Irish consumers have purchased a refurbished device with 1 in 2 people considering buying a refurbished electronic device. The impact on the environment and the reduction of their carbon footprint is one of the main reasons that an Irish consumer would purchase a refurbished device.

Refurbed undertake a 40-step refurbishment process to ensure all products are restored to factory settings compared to most stores, which sell retro consoles second hand and, in some cases, provide no product warranty. Equally important to Irish customers is the value they get when purchasing consoles, with almost 67% of Irish people stating price as a very important factor when purchasing electronics. With refurbed’s consoles being sustainable, cheaper and warrantied, this is a great new offering to Irish consumers.

The refurbishment process reduces carbon emissions by 70% compared to the manufacturing of a new electronic device. This means that Irish gamers will be able to buy their favourite gaming console and have a positive impact on the environment.

Third-class students from Robertson National School, Ballintra, Co. Donegal, have been crowned national winners of Engineers Ireland’s STEPS Young Engineers Award for their Hydro-Electro Storm project, a solar and rain powered car which aims to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere.

Developed by the Robertson Eco-Roadsters, comprising of teammates Alex Murphy, Georgia Green and Will Crawford, the Hydro-Electro Storm operates using solar and hydraulic energy. The innovative two-seater car was developed with the Irish climate in mind and comprises of a creative roof system to collect and funnel rainwater to a hydraulic pump and solar panels to absorb sunlight to help power the car.

Having developed a working prototype of futuristic car, the winning student team commented: “The STEPS Young Engineers Award competition encouraged us to dream big, be creative and help engineer solutions for our community and we are delighted to be crowned winners of this year’s competition.

“We wanted to create an environmentally friendly car for the Irish climate, and we are incredibly proud of our Hydro-Electro Storm prototype. Using Lego, a construction kit, lots of imagination and teamwork, it was amazing to see our idea on paper come to life as the hydraulic module and solar panel both worked effectively to power the car. We would like to thank our teacher Ms Patterson and local engineer Gerard McGranagahan who inspired and motivated us throughout the project.”

The Robertson National School students faced stiff competition from 428 schools from across Ireland who submitted almost 500 projects to this year’s STEPS Young Engineers Award, which is co-ordinated by Engineers Ireland’s STEPS programme – funded by the Department of Education and industry leaders Arup, the EPA, ESB, Intel and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

The nationwide primary school competition encourages third- and fourth-class pupils and their teachers to explore the world of engineering by developing an engineering project that would help to improve their local community.

In addition to the winning team, students from Scoil Naomh Áine, Clondalkin, were announced as runners-up in the competition, with pupils from the school also receiving highly commended status alongside The Model School Kilkenny, Mary Mother of Hope Senior School, Castaheany and St. Christophers Primary School, Ballsbridge for their innovative designs.

Each project team was recognised today at a virtual awards ceremony on Engineers Ireland’s website and YouTube Channel, which also included an Engineering Spectacular show by Mark Langtry, Head of Science and Sport at Explorium.

Praising this year’s entrants to the STEPS Young Engineers Award, Caroline Spillane, Director General of Engineers Ireland, said: “I would like to congratulate all the third and fourth-class pupils, teachers and volunteers who participated in this year’s STEPS Young Engineers Award.

We were so pleased to see such a high level of creative and innovative projects entered into this year’s competition. It is my hope that each student who participated in the STEPS Young Engineers Award thoroughly enjoyed this experience and that they will be encouraged to continue their exploration of the exciting world of engineering into the future.”

Additionally, Ms Spillane applauded each of the volunteer engineers who visited schools to assist students with their projects: “We are incredibly grateful to our volunteer engineers who visited schools across Ireland to help students with their projects. I would also like to pay tribute to our volunteers from Arup, ESB, Intel, Kildare County Council and Tandem and who assisted with the judging process.”
