Hello Culture Clubbers,
How was your week? Maggie appeared on Flex Mami’s podcast and Jasmine retrogressed to her 14-year-old self and bought the new Twilight book (as well as tackling its issue with Indigenous culture).
Today we talk about classism in sustainable fashion. We chat about what time and financial barriers inhibit sustainable or secondhand shopping and why we shouldn’t shame people for purchasing fast fashion out of necessity. Both of us really enjoyed Maeve Kerr-Crowley’s piece on op-shopping as a size 18 in Fashion Journal. We recommend Sisters Studios, Rosa Rosa the Label, A.BCH and Maggie Marilyn as our more affordable ethical options.
Jasmine’s recommendations for this week are the articles “Ellen DeGeneres’ Relatability Crisis” by Michael Shulman and “The problem with the Australian fashion industry’s tendency towards ‘ethnically ambiguous’ models” by oops, our very own Maggie Zhou. Maggie (half) recommends Zadie Smith’s debut novel, White Teeth.
As always, our jingle, editing and production is by the talented @india_raine. You can email us at [email protected], find us on Instagram at @cultureclubpod, or on our personal accounts at @jasmineeskye and @yemagz.
With love,
Maggie & Jasmine xx
