We recently discovered that three of Israel's most important musical poets share a birthday on July 13th. Dan Almagor turned 86 this year, Ehud Manor would have been 80, and Naomi Shemer would have turned 91. Today we celebrate the music of these great artists, with popular songs that will undoubtedly have you singing along in no time. Recorded on Tisha B'av, this week's podcast focuses on the optimistic side of the holiday. May 2021 was an interesting month in Israel, full of highs and lows. It began with a general feeling of hope, with most Coronavirus restrictions lifted and life getting back to normal. However, the celebratory mood quickly turned to one of fear, with 4,000 rockets raining down on Israeli cities. Israelis left the streets once again and huddled in bomb shelters. Once that was over, frustration...as antisemitism and anti-Zionism began to emerge around the world. Much of the music you'll hear this week reflects many of those emotions, punctuated by new songs from Ivri Lider, Noa Kirel and Omer Adam, Marina Maximillian and others. In the aftermath of Israel's latest flare up with Hamas in Gaza, Jews everywhere have seen an ugly escalation of anti-Semitism around the world. As we remain vigilant and stand up against hate and intolerance, we also pray for peace. It just so happens that Israelis have been yearning for peace since the founding of the state, and apparently, like to sing about it. To say the least, it's been a tense week for Israel. Our brothers and sisters are under constant threat of rocket fire, and many have spent several days huddled in bomb shelters. Throughout it all, the brave men and women of the IDF have done their best to keep our nation safe.

Today, we thank them through music - offering prayers, praise, hope, and gratitude. It's our way of giving a virtual 'hug' to our our chayalim and chayalot. May we see better days ahead. (Original Air Date: May 16, 2021)
