December is the month when we tend to reflect on the year, and while it's easy to feel proud and nostalgic, there's also a darker side. Sometimes, we find ourselves overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty, unsure of what we've truly accomplished. We panic. With all the holiday planning, balancing work, friends, family, and responsibilities, it can feel like we need to work even harder to deserve the good times, so we overbook ourselves and end up punishing our own well-being.

But-Why-Design? (a phrase coined by Taylor): The elements of a space that are categorized as aesthetic "nice-to-haves," and therefore, are not as highly prioritized or are ruled out early on in the design process due to concerns about how far a project’s budget can stretch. What I’ve found as a designer is that this is one common way we close ourselves off from all the potential our space can bring. This is what I call the "design scarcity effect," and I won’t let it influence pre-design thinking anymore! It’s Saturday morning. I flutter my eyes open at 8 a.m., expecting to see a blue sky and hear nothing but birds chirping in the distance. Instead, my thoughts are interrupted by the sound of water dripping from the corner of my apartment. Yes, I had a leak.. and it couldn’t have come at a worse time. But here’s the thing: it’s true what they say, we don’t appreciate what we have until it’s gone. In my case, what was gone was the warm, cozy, and comfortable space I had always considered home. Even thought I knew my apartment to be all these things I couldn't leave my apartment fast enough that day. Now this got me thinking about why we view comfortable spaces as safe? Well I endure the sound of dripping water (massing up to be 10L total collected in a garbage can) for 30-45 minutes to dive deeper (pun very intended) into this topic with you today.

Today, join Taylor in a tranformative, slightly traumatic and borderline dramatic tale of the time she got robbed by a member of the building team during her family’s home renovation in the early 2000s. Fortunately, this very early on experience didn’t go without any gain as this planted a seed. She learned the hard way, that unfortunately we can’t trust everything we hear especially when we are granting someone complete access to some of the most personal corners of our home. Even if they consider themselves “professionals”.. it runs a little deeper than that and it’s our resonsibility to do our research. Back then, (believe it or not), she didn’t say much so she saw A LOT of red flags along the way and those red flags over time unfortunately got so red they basically tuned purple. As she looks back with 20/20 vision while pulling from her own design experiences throughout the years, Taylor has put forward some tips on what she would encourage others to keep an eye out for as they look to collaborate with a builder and how to start off on the right foot. When I was away in LA I was lucky enough to have access to the Roosevelt Hotel’s newly renovated Johnny Grant Apartment where everything from Vogue photoshoots to Oscar parties have been hosted there at some point in time. If you’re a modern day design finatic, like myself, you probably get most of your design inspiration from sources online. I’m talking about instagram, pinterest and tiktok but let’s not forget that this is just one lens. It’s tough to really get into the nitty gritty of the details of what makes the space truly shine.
