Chat and Chugs Raft-Allison burned with youthful excitement, they were practically vibrating with the stuff. Their ear-splitting grins like heat sinks for the unbridled joy coursing through them. They wanted to dance with all that energy, sing, and play. But much like any child who has been given, what they perceive to be a, "grown-up job" stuck to their duties with an almost comical seriousness.
They were given the task to hold the door, and hold the door they did. Side-by-side with their backs pressed into its wood, hands at their sides like Storm-troopers at attention.
They watched their father close the distance between them, the giant brown box that he carried obscured his torso, giving the impression of a walking box, an observation Chugs saw fit to whisper to his fellow door-guard and sibling. They both broke out into fits of giggles at this but dared not to leave their posts.
As their father Jack Allison crossed the threshold, the door was all but forgotten and the kids were around the box the second it touched carpet.
Cait Raft, their birthing-parent, gazed fondly at their collection of loved ones (husband included), closed the front door and left them to their toys.
“Happy Import Day!” Jack said to his kids, and they parroted this greeting with as much, if not more, enthusiasm.
Jack instructed his kids to stand aside and went through a routine safety mini-lecture as he unveiled a box cutter and sliced open the box. Inside were all sorts of Japanese imported goods including model kits, paints, and brushes.
“Gundam Wing!” exclaimed Chat, as they held up a model kit.
“That’s right,” said Jack, “From Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz of course. And there’s more where that came from Chat!” Jack and Chat spent the next few minutes geeking out as they pulled more and more treasures out of the box.
When the last model kit was pulled, Jack turned to Chugs who was waiting eagerly off to the side. “And we didn’t forget about you of course Chugs!” said Jack, “here are your…” Jack pulled out a smaller box inside the larger one and wrinkled his nose, “Funko, pops.” He handed Chugs the box, which wasn’t taped, and promptly left the room.
Later that night, In the open doorway to the kid’s rooms Cait and Jack watched the young ones sleep. “You gotta connect with them,” Cait said in a hushed voice.
“Who, Chugs? They’re my kid Cait, I’d die for them, any of them. You know that. ”
“I’m not doubting that Jack. And you’re a good dad, I’m just saying you could learn to spend a little more time with them. And video games don’t count, I’m talking about the stuff they love.”
“I do!” said Jack and Chat rolled over in their sleep.
Cait shushed their husband. “As much time as you spend painting models with Chat?”
“That’s different. Chat is into the real shit: models, painting, cutting, gluing. Chugs is like a Funko...person. I mean what the hell do you want to do here Cait?”
“Figure it out Jack. Fucking engage with them, they adore you. Just show a little interest —Fake it.”
Jack sighed. “Alright. You’re right, I’ll think of something, but Cait these fucking Funko guys are psychos, they don’t even take it out of the box.”
Cait rolled her eyes, turned and started to walk away.
“The box Cait, they just let it sit there!” Jack hissed after her. “Seriously, do we want to raise our child into the kind of person who--”
“Goodnight Jack.”
