Chronic health conditions, including autoimmune diseases, are a common reason people end up seeking somatic work. My client Hillary began working with after being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, a condition commonly associated with and worsened by stress. Hillary shares her journey at a stressful job struggling with burnout and how somatics helped her reduce stress, stop people pleasing, get clear on what's important to her, and ultimately decide to leave and take time for herself. This is a sweet conversation and a great example of the profound impact of the transformation possible through somatic coaching.

None of us like feeling stressed, but is it as bad for us as we think? In this episode I explore the nuances of when and how stress can actually be good for us and when it actually can be bad for us and our health. I dive into some research that shows how our mindset or beliefs about stress directly influence if our experience of stress is positive or negative. I offer some reframes to change how you think and experience stress so it's less likely to be debilitating and somatic practices to move through stress. If you experience stress in your life this episode is a must! I also provide MANY caveats! This episode is focuses on stress, not the stressor or the cause and it's all too real that our society intentionally creates an abundance of stressors that could be avoided or minimized. Changing our mindset can only do so much and we need real structural change, but until then let's change what's within our control - our mindset and what we do in response to stress.

Take a moment to slow down, drop into your body, and explore somatic awareness. This brief guided body scan meditation will help you pause, connect with your body and get curious about what sensations and emotions are present. Modern life is so busy and productivity focused that we often are only in our bodies when we're experiencing major pleasure or major pain, only to do anything to not feel. The more we build our capacity to feel sensations, including "bad" ones, we have more choices about what we do. Body scan meditations differ from mindfulness meditations; we're intentionally exploring the body and it's sensations as curious observers.
Save body scan mediation in a playlist and download it to use it whenever you want a moment of pause and somatic connection.

I'm a somatic coach but what exactly does that mean? In this episode I define what I mean by somatics and why I believe the body is our ultimate guide, our inner compass. I unpack what somatics looks like in my work, the lineages I’m a student of, why we need somatics with social analysis, and how somatics differs from mindfulness.
