5-vuotiaan Haleigh Cummingsin 17-vuotias äitipuoli Misty Croslin ilmoitti Haleighn kadonneeksi keskellä yötä vuonna 2008, sanoen että tyttö oli yhtäkkiä hävinnyt perheen asuntoautosta. Vuosien aikana tapauksen ympärillä on ollut muutamia erilaisia käänteitä ja monet tapaukseen mahdollisesti sekaantuneet ovat saaneet vankilatuomioita eri rikoksista. Silti Haleighn kohtalo on edelleen avoin, eikä kenelläkään ole täyttä varmuutta edes siitä, mistä ja milloin Haleigh todella katosi.

Kun Dave Krupan ja Cari Farverin lyhyt suhde yllättäen päättyi, Dave alkoi saamaan uhkaavia ja herjaavia tekstiviestejä ja sähköposteja Carilta. Davesta alkoi tuntua että häntä stalkattiin ja hän koki olonsa toisinaan uhatuksi. Poliisien mielestä tapauksessa oli jotain outoa ja heidän oli vaikea uskoa, että Cari oli oikeasti uhkaavien viestien lähettäjä.
