His recommendations are:

• All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely: Gunn calls this "the best Superman story." It's not an origin story but a tale of Superman's final days, showcasing his immense compassion, hope, and humanity as he performs incredible feats to help the world.
• Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale: Set early in the Dark Knight's career, this is a year-long murder mystery. It serves as an excellent introduction to Batman's world and his extensive rogues' gallery, including the origin of Two-Face.
• The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke: This story is set in the 1950s and acts as a bridge between the Golden Age and Silver Age of comics. It has a hopeful, optimistic tone and shows heroes like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman coming together to form the Justice League.
• Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross: A non-canon "Elseworlds" story set in a dark future where a new generation of violent heroes has taken over. It forces the classic, retired heroes like Superman to return and confront the meaning of heroism itself, all depicted in Alex Ross's iconic painted artwork.
