I met Lisa through the wonderful IG community a few years ago and saw that she was running a podcast with fellow yoga teacher Aimee Pruitt called the Radiant Warrior Podcast, where they both discuss how they used both yoga and Ayurveda (the holistic theory behind yoga) to heal themselves from their own life challenges, of anxiety and burn out.
At the point when I found the podcast I had been doing yoga myself for around 20 years but not really got into the theory behind it, I absolutely loved their conversational approach to teaching about the subject through this podcast, each week would be like a phone call of two friends which you got to listen in on and learn so much from.
I also really related to Lisa’s story specifically as she worked in radio broadcasting originally when she first started experiencing anxiety after having a negative manager. I have a media degree and whilst I was studying I volunteered at a BBC radio station, and then I ran my own show on MK Hospital Radio for about a year and a half too, I always thought broadcasting was where I wanted to work and I can really relate to one the one hand appearing as an extrovert as I love to communicate and talk, but underneath fairly self-conscious and anxious. I also love how Lisa has taken this huge life challenge, which I am only giving you the briefest of introductions on, and uses it now as a teaching opportunity to support others through, in her own words “wounds can become wisdom”
My anxiety and insomnia have really been blown open since having children, previously I think I always thought of myself as a worrier from a family of worriers, but these days (my boys are now 5 years old) I feel so much more aware of my triggers and holistic health and how that helps me, after being on prescribed sleep medication for 18 months, anti-depressants for a couple of months and managing to get off both when furloughed from my last job during the pandemic I have learnt so much through this journey. I’m still very much a work in progress, but I’m so glad that people are talking about mental health in such an open and honest way now and I hope that through this podcast and the guests which I have over the coming months I can do my part to normalise it all more and offer some things which have helped me, and learn some things too.
I’m excited about this conversation, I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did.
