The Indian Constitution defines our country as a "Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic". But today, some BJP–RSS leaders are saying that ‘Socialist’ and ‘Secular’ should be removed from the Preamble. The question is — Janab Aise Kaise?
The irony? These very words are written on the first page of the BJP’s own constitution. And their NDA allies — JD(U), NCP, RLD, HAM, Apna Dal — also swear by socialism and secularism in their constitutions and vision statements. Two of them even have ‘Secular’ in their party names. So what will BJP tell its own allies?
When these words form the basis of India’s welfare schemes, when the Supreme Court has upheld them as part of the Constitution’s basic structure, and when Atal Bihari Vajpayee himself said “Secularism runs in our blood” — why is there a need to erase them?
