「京都のお茶漬け」という有名な言葉がある。

京都で「中へ入ってお茶漬けでもどうぞ」と言われたら、それは「さっさと帰れ」の意味だ。

さすがにこれは極端な例だが、日本でのビジネスにおいても、似たようなことは往々にしてありうる。

「前向きに検討します」「またご一緒しましょう」「近くまでおいでの際はお立ち寄りください」などといった言葉は、かなりの高い確率で、「社交辞令」だと考えた方がいい。つまり、本気にしてはいけない。

なぜなら、相手に面と向かって、「お断りします」「無理です」「帰れ」とは言いにくいと感じる日本人は多いからだ。

まさに、「NOと言えない日本人」である。

断りたい場合、言い方によっては、相手がしつこく食い下がってきたり、逆恨みしたりと面倒なことにもなりかねない。

そこで、「前向きに検討する」という含みをもたせた表現を使う。

そうすれば、こちらの印象を損なうこともなく、和やかな雰囲気で別れることができる。

だが後日届くのは、これまた「残念ですが」という社交辞令つきの「お断り」の返事である。

もちろん、大抵の場合「残念だ」などとは露ほども思ってはいない。

同様に、「二度と顔も見たくない」相手だとは思っても、「またご一緒しましょう」「どうぞお立ち寄りください」と言葉を交わすのが、大人の対応というものである。

しかしその一方で、真剣に検討してくれたり、再会や訪問を心から喜んでくれたりする場合もあるから、ややこしい。

日本人同士でも、相手の言葉が単なる社交辞令か、本気で言っているのかを察するのは難しい。

したがって、こうした言葉を本気で言ってもらえるような信頼関係を築くことが、何よりも大切なのである。

「きょうとのおちゃづけけ」というゆうめいなことばがある。

きょうとで「なかへいっっておちゃづけけでもどうぞ」といわれたら、それは「さっさとかえれ」のいみだ。

さすがにこれはきょくたんなれいだが、にっぽんでのビジネスにおいても、にたようなことはおうおうにしてありうる。

「まえむきにけんとうします」「またごいっしょしましょう」「ちかくまでおいでのきわはおたちよりください」などといったことばは、かなりのたかいかくりつで、「しゃこうじれい」だとかんがえたほうがいい。つまり、ほんきにしてはいけない。

なぜなら、あいてにめんとむかって、「おことわりします」「むりです」「かえれ」とはいいにくいとかんじるにほんじんはおおいからだ。

まさに、「NOといえないにほんじん」である。

ことわりたいばあい、いいかたによっては、あいてがしつこくくいさがってきたり、さかうらみしたりとめんどうなことにもなりかねない。

そこで、「まえむきにけんとうする」というふくみをもたせたひょうげんをつかう。

そうすれば、こちらのいんしょうをそこなうこともなく、なごやかなふんいきでわかれることができる。

だがごじつとどくのは、これまた「ざんねんですが」というしゃこうじれいつきの「おことわり」のへんじである。

もちろん、たいていのばあい「ざんねんだ」などとはつゆほどもおもってはいない。

どうように、「にどとかおもみたくない」あいてだとはおもっても、「またごいっしょしましょう」「どうぞおたちよりください」とことばをまじわすのが、おとなのたいおうというものである。

しかしそのいっぽうで、しんけんにけんとうしてくれたり、さいかいやほうもんをこころからよろこんでくれたりするばあいもあるから、ややこしい。

にほんじんどうしでも、あいてのことばがたんなるしゃこうじれいか、ほんきでいっっているのかをさっするのはむずかしい。

したがって、こうしたことばをほんきでいっってもらえるようなしんらいかんけいをきづくことが、なによりもたいせつなのである。

There is famous saying called "Kyoto ochazuke."

When you are in Kyoto, if you are told to "please come in and have some ochazuke," that means "please go home quickly."

As you would expect, this is an extreme example, but in Japanese business, similar things can happen now and then.

For phrases like, "We'll consider it moving forward," "Let's meet again sometime," and "Please drop in again when you're closeby," it is better to think that these phrases are, in all likelihood, social rhetoric.

In other words, you shouldn't take them seriously.

The reason is that there are many Japanese people who find it difficult to say things like "No, thank you," "It's impossible," or "Go home" to someone's face.

This is exactly what “The Japanese can’t say NO” means.

When you want to refuse something, depending on the way you say it, it is possible that the other person may carry on persistently and that it can get somehow troublesome for you.

There, you should use an expression that carries the meaning that you will "actively consider it."

By doing so, you won't damage their impression of you and you can depart with a calm atmosphere.

But what comes a few days later will be another refusal using social rhetoric that starts with "Unfortunately..."

Of course, in most cases, you are not even in the slightest thinking that it's "unfortunate."

In the same way, even if it's someone who you think you "don't want to see again", saying something like "let's do this again sometime" or "please drop in again when you're nearby" is seen as a grown-up response.

However on the contrary, this becomes complicated in cases where you actually may consider an offer seriously, or would in fact be really happy to visit or meet up again.

Even amongst Japanese people, it is difficult to tell whether the other person's words are just social rhetoric, or whether they mean what they say.
