You need to use a verb plain form plus の or こと to change a verb into a noun describing an action.

For example,

たべる(eat)→たべるの(eating), たべること(eating)

あるく(walk)→あるくの(walking), あるくこと(walking)

はなす(speak)→はなすの(speaking), はなすこと(speaking)

わたし　は　たべるの　が　すき　です。

わたし　は　たべること　が　すき　です。

I like eating.

わたし　は　あるくの　が　すき　です。

わたし　は　あるくこと　が　すき　です。

I like walking.

わたし　は　はなすの　が　すき　です。

わたし　は　はなすこと　が　すき　です。

I like speaking.

さとうさん　は　えをかくの　が　とくい　です。

さとうさん　は　えをかくこと　が　とくい　です。

Mr. Sato is good at drawing a picture.

* えをかく means "draw a picture"

* が　とくいです means "be good at something"

さとうさん　は　えをかくの　が　にがて　です。

さとうさん　は　えをかくこと　が　にがて　です。

Mr. Sato is not good at drawing a picture.

* が　にがてです means "be not good at something"

In this lesson, I will introduce how to say "Please don't do something" in Japanese.

In order to ask someone not to do something, you need to use a negative plain form together with でください.

ここ　で　たべない　でください。

Please do not eat here.

ここ　で　はしらない　でください。

Please do not run here.

おおきなこえ　で　はなさない　でください。

Please do not speak loudly.

きょう　は　おさけ　を　のまない　でください。

Please do not drink alcohol today.

Please refrain from using the expression using a te-form together with はいけません, which means "You must not do something" unless you are in a position of authority or the action is prohibited by regulation. It is strong expression.

In this lesson, I introduce how to say  "He/She said that" in Japanese.

You need the plain form together with といっていました to say "He/She said that".

さとうさん　は　あした　きょうと　に　いく　といっていました。

Mr. Sato said that he would go to Kyoto tomorrow.

さとうさん　は　ハンバーガー　が　すきだ　といっていました。

Mr. Sato said that he liked a hamburger.

メアリーさん　は　アメリカじん　ではない　といっていました。

Mary said that she was not an American.

* Progressive expression "といっていました" indicates that you were actually listening to someone's utterance at the site.

In this lesson, I will introduce how to say "I think that" in Japanese.

When you want to say what you think, you use the plain form together with とおもいます.

と is a quotation particle which works just like "that".

Affirmative:

さとうさん　は　きょう　パーティー　に　くる　とおもいます。

I think Mr. Sato will come to the party today.

Negative:

さとうさん　は　きょう　パーティー　に　こない　とおもいます。

I don't think Mr. Sato will come to the party today.

* Do not change とおもいます to とおもいません to negate the sentence just like English changes "think" to " don't think"

   Normally, we negate the quoted part to negate the sentence.

Affirmative:

きょうと　は　きれいだ　とおもいます。

I think Kyoto is beautiful.

Negative:

きょうと　は　きれいではない　とおもいます。

I don't think Kyoto is beautiful.

Affirmative:

あのひと　は　アメリカじんだ　とおもいます。

I think that person is an American.

Negative:

あのひと　は　アメリカ人ではない　とおもいます。

I don't think that person is an American.

For な-Adjectives

Plain Forms:

げんき。(with rising intonation)

Are you good?

うん、げんき。

Yes, I'm good.

Polite Forms:

げんきですか。

Are you good?

はい、げんきです。

Yes, I'm good.

For noun + です

Plain Forms:

これ、iPhone。(with rising intonation)

Is this iPhone?

うん、iPhone。

Yes, it is.

Polite Forms:

これ、iPhoneですか。

Is this iPhone?

はい、iPhoneです。

Yes, it is.

Polite Forms:

Yes=はい　No=いいえ

Plain Forms:

Yes=うん　No=ううん

*いや=No (this can be both formal occasion and casual occasion)
