Is this the beginning of the end of celebrity culture in America?
It has been a tough week for celebrities, including backlash against athletes like Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson, plus musicians like U2 and Robin Thicke. But the one issue that is making me crazy right now is what happened with Rihanna and her spot that was pulled from CBS (http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/16/showbiz/tv/rihanna-cbs-thursday-night-football/).
CBS, who thought they were doing the right thing by removing a song that was performed by a woman who was a victim herself of domestic violence, was slammed by Rihanna. Clearly, she believes more in selling records than supporting the fight against domestic violence.
It's time for a values check. These celebrities are standing in the spotlight, making bad decisions, and sending the wrong message to our kids.
Businesses must consider this when choosing whether to work with valued consumers, who already love your business, and potential "influencers", whom you'll have to persuade to love your business. Stop running your company as if you are going to recruit Rihanna to support it.
