Now, today, I found an article written about wagashi, so I looked up wagashi.

Wagashi is different from Western confectionery, which uses butter and cream, so foreigners who eat it for the first time are afraid to try it because they are afraid of not knowing what it is, and the taste is also unfamiliar, so at first, it is hard to approach it with a 'hmm' feeling. However, after eating it a few times, many people gradually become fans because of its beautiful appearance and gentle sweetness.

さて、今日は、和菓子について書かれていた記事を見つけたので和菓子について調べてみました。

和菓子は、バターやクリームを使う洋菓子と違うので、初めて食べる外国人には、なんだかわからないという怖さから、恐々口にし、そして、その味もあまり馴染みがないので最初は「うーん」ととっつきにくいのですが、何回か食べると、その見た目の美しさやほんのりとしたやさしい甘味から、だんだんとファンになって行く場合も多いようです。

さて「練り切り」という和菓子をご存知ですか？ 練りきりとは、季節の風物などを写しとって作られる芸術的な和菓子で、白のこしあんとつなぎになる求肥（ぎゅうひ）をしっかりねってねりきり生地を作り、練りきり生地に色粉などで色を付け、四季折々の形が作られます。

見た目が綺麗でしょ。

Growing up in the US there was always this image of Japan having a mascot character for what seemed like everything. Upon moving to Japan I discovered that that image was actually a reality. The use of mascot characters is extremely widespread here, so much so that every prefecture and even most cities have their own mascots.

Here in this picture is the mascot character of Kumamoto known as Kumamon, a play on the fact that the prefecture has "kuma" (which means “bear”) in its name. Not all mascots are solely based on the name however, many running a wide range of meanings and cultural significance to their specific regions. They act as a way to bring the community together and rally behind whenever the need to support their home prefecture comes up.

アメリカで育った私は、日本には何でもかんでもマスコットキャラクターがいるというイメージを持っていました。日本に来て、そのイメージが現実のものとなっていることを知りました。日本ではマスコットキャラクターが非常に普及しており、各都道府県やほとんどの都市にマスコットキャラクターがいるほどです。

この写真は熊本のマスコットキャラクター「くまモン」で、県名に「くま」が入っていることにちなんでいるようです。しかし、マスコットキャラクターは名前だけでなく、その地域の文化的な意味合いも含んでいるものが多いようです。マスコットキャラクターは、地元を応援する必要性が生じたときに、地域をひとつにまとめ、団結させる役割を担っているのです。

Today, I would like to introduce Kyushu.

Kyushu, or the Nine Kingdoms, currently consists of only seven prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Oita, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima.

Research shows that in the past, there were nine provinces: Chikuzen, Chikugo, Buzen, Bungo, Hizen, Higo, Hyuga, Satsuma, and Osumi, which is why they are called Kyushu.

In this episode, we introduce Nanzoin Temple and the Statue of the Reclining Buddha in Fukuoka Prefecture, Sakurajima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, Yakushima Island, which is registered as a World Natural Heritage site and is also said to be the setting of the Ghibli animation "Princess Mononoke," Mount Aso and Kumamoto Castle in Kumamoto Prefecture, and Takachiho gorge in Miyazaki Prefecture.

今日は九州についてご紹介します。

九州、すなわち九つの国という事ですが、現在は福岡県、佐賀県、長崎県、大分県、熊本県、宮崎県、鹿児島県の7県しかありません。

調べてみると、かつては、筑前国、筑後国、豊前国、豊後国、肥前国、肥後国、日向国、薩摩国、大隅国の九つあったため九州と言われるようになったそうです。

このエピソードでご紹介しているのは、福岡県の南蔵院、釈迦涅槃像、鹿児島県の桜島、世界自然遺産に登録され、また、ジブリのアニメもののけ姫の舞台になったともいわれている屋久島、熊本県の阿蘇山、熊本城、宮崎県の高千穂峡などをご紹介しています。

Hida Takayama is a mountain city located in Gifu Prefecture, north of Nagoya, and is a town full of emotion with machiya (traditional townhouse) architecture from the time when it flourished as a merchant town from the late Edo period to the Meiji period, and is designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
