  • Episode 254: Strange Journey - The Story of Rocky Horror

So many cool episodes, so little time! The Ghouls are happy to present this mini episode/review of the new documentary, Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror.

From Linus O'Brien comes the touching story of his father, Richard O'Brien's cult classic Rocky Horror. From the stage to the screen to the midnight showings and everything in between. Rocky Horror in any format has found its way to so many people. Not only are the cast and crew interviewed but so many others who's lives were truly blessed by a straight-laced couple and a bunch of aliens.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Strange Journey will be released in cinemas on October 4th!

For the full in-depth chat about the film version, check out the Ghouls episode 216. And a huge THANK YOU to Strike Media for the advanced screener.

  • Episode 253: Demons Be Gone!

Grab your holy water and your bible because we need to send these demons back to hell! While the Ghouls feel completely prepared and ready to assist you with all of your exorcism needs, please know they take all of their possession education from the movies.

This week they continue their Fall of Found Footage journey with The Last Exorcism and The Devil Inside. Marissa tries to her best to get Jacki to agree to help her if in fact any of this is real while Jacki just wants to curl up with a good book and deny Christ. Whether its found footage or fake documentary style, the Ghouls are still loving the hell (see what I did there) out of all the movies so far.

Check out the article Jacki mentioned by David Haglund.

Up next is The Spooky Dooky October Extravaganza! Each Sunday in October the Ghouls will be diving into the Hell House, LLC franchise!

  • Episode 252- So I Creep

Jacki and Marissa are kicking the #Fall of Found Footage with a dive into the Creep Series by Mark Duplass and Patrick Brice. They talk about what makes the found footage subgenre so popular. They talk about the rules of making a good found footage film. They then dive into the Creep series and rave about how such a small budget film could be so powerful.

  • Episode 251: A Holiday at Bly Manor

Jacki and Marissa continue their celebration of Mike Flanagan, with a discussion of The Haunting of Bly Manor. Marissa crashes out about the death, being forgotten, and the afterlife. She decides to plan her own Halloween Hell House, where the only people who have to worry are horrible humans. The rest of us are going straight up. As Marissa spirals we are lucky that Jacki is here to talk her down and remind her that is the mess of life and being loves is all beautiful yet inevitably tragic.

Is this the weakest entry in the Mike Flanagan Cinematic Universe? Maybe, but the ghouls agree that it is still an incredibly beautiful meditation on love, grief, and memento mori.

  • Episode 250: Celebrate 250 & Doctor Sleep

The Ghouls are celebrating episode 250 with a little Q&A to start the show. They get personal and talk about their fears, their hopes for the future, and the Ghouls they have become over the last 9 years of the show.

Then they jump back into The (Inconsistent) Year of Mike Flannagan with his adaptation of Stephen King's Doctor Sleep. The sequel to The Shining is in very good hands and the Ghouls gush about everything from the actors, to the homages, to the visuals and writing.

  • Episode 249: Jacki's Bday Celebration of Army of Darkness

Hail to the queen, baby, and join the ghouls as we celebrate our hostess with the most-ess, Jacki one of our favorite regulars, AJ. This time, we do not try to scare AJ, but, rather, let him chuckle along at the silly shenanigans that are Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness. The gang celebrates the film's groovy FX. They give Bruce Campbell the props he deserves, and they chuckle at the films slapstick. Marissa, of course, goes on to bring everyone down with a feminist rant about the Evil Dead Movies. But Marissa does redeem herself with some fun history of slapstick comedy trivia.

So happy birthday Jacki, you little she-bitch. You really are the heart, brains, and beauty of the ghouls empire.

The year of Mike Flannigan continues with what made him a household name: the Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House. • Episode 247: The Ghouls Celebrate Shudder

Join Jacki and Marissa as they celebrate another favorite Ghouls streaming service: Shudder. This all horror channel has been a JG staple for years, and it brings together the best older horror classics as well as the best in indie and Shudder produced horror.

Specifically, they ghouls tackle the 2023 Shudder Original The Sacrifice Game. A surprisingly fun play on home invastion and demon possession films. They also talk Mandy, a 2018 Shudder darling. Marissa gushes over the trippy artistry of the film while Jacki celebrates both the softer side of Nic Cage as well as his unhinged crazy side. And while Jacki criticizes the influencer, capitalism driven cults of consumption that define modern America Marissa sadly misses the point and ironically begs those very same companies for sponsorship (But seriously... Shudder, Owala, Uggs, call us).

  • Episode 246: Smile 1 & 2

This week Jacki and Marissa are joined by the awesome Katie Hampton and Marie Brand from Napping Through Happy Hour to discuss Smile 1 and Smile 2. Marissa goes 0 for 2 this spring, forcing their awesome, non-horror heavy guests to experience these gory psychological horror films.

Do these films handle trauma and grief in an irresponsible way? What is a filmmaker's responsibility to the audience when dealing with heavy topics? Will anything defeat this demon? How much Voss water can one person chug in a day? Is Morris real? The gang tackles these questions and more as they dive into the Smile franchise.
