Welcome back for another episode of #JobTlks. In this week’s episode, we talk with recently retired Deputy Chief Joe Marchetti of the Brockton Fire department about his career and the importance of taking time to care about ourselves as first responders. Joe points out the importance of early detection of cancer and other diseases, and how it impacts our survivability so we can enjoy a healthy retirement.

We take time to discuss how Joe is taking action against cancer, and he demonstrates what a true leader in our industry looks like by going beyond his retirement in partnership with #detectogether to continue to advocate for Firefighters across the country, truly leaving the fire service better than he found it.

We dive right into his presentation about early detection, and what we can do to help ensure that we are taking the steps to take care of ourselves.  Joe has an incredible story of his late friend and local legend Joey Marano, and the “Story of Two Joeys.”  He also takes time to talk about his friend, senior man, and mentor Ray Roberts who left us all with a very simple message - “Get your shit checked.”

#Repsonsetimematters.org is going nationwide with the help of some industry staples with the likes of #JasonPatton, a guy who is raising awareness for all things health in the Fire Industry.  We talk about how Joe played a major role in building a presentation and campaign by treating our self checks like “size ups”, and using common terminology that we use everyday in the fire service to better communicate how important this mission is to all of us.

We mention Jim Coghlin, founder of #detectogether and how incredible it is to find that we have people in our community who are taking their time, money, and effort to have our backs and look out for our health and wellness in return for our service to them.

We mention another invaluable resource and friend to the fire service, Dr. Christine Kannler and how the passing of her brother from job related cancer motivated her to do everything in her power to advocate for us, including driving across the state of MA and doing free skin checks to aid in our early detection of Cancer.

Finally Joe gives us a fantastic book recommendation for the #Jobtlks book bookshelf, Killer Show, by John Barylick, that highlights the importance of fire prevention and how we must be diligent in our efforts and continue to keep our communities safe.

Welcome back to another episode of JobTlks Podcast. In this episode we tackle a tough topic: #generationalgap in the #fireservice. There are currently 5 generations in the #American workforce. All 5 generations have been shaped by significant events occurring in their lives. These events give people different perspectives on life. They effect the things we find important to give and to take from our employers and careers.

Not everyone fits exactly into one box or identifies with a single generation. However, we know generational gaps exist. As employees of the fire service, we work in #nofail environments. We cannot ;et these gaps divide us. We may not be able to close these gaps always, but we can bridge them and create two way communication between them.

A #foundation and #culture of #respect for our peers allows us to bridge these divides and deliver a better service to our customers.

This week’s episode is quite special in that it is the first JobTlks Veterans Day Episode featuring special guest Lieutenant Shayne Newton of the Leominster Fire Department Local 1841. The JobTlks team is excited to welcome LT Newton to the show, as he is not only a 22-year veteran of the Leominster Fire Department but a 26-year veteran of the United States Air Force and Massachusetts Air National Guard, where he has held a litany of leadership assignments, retiring at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant.

From here, the JobTlks team briefly highlights the service and background of Will & Barrey, who share the common bond of being Army Paratroopers. As the team dives into the episode, many veteran-related topics are discussed, such as highlighting what makes veterans well suited for a career in the fire service, working to maintain a positive perception of military service members as “ambassadors” of military service and continuing to exhibit many of the positive attributes of military service such as exhibiting a no-fail attitude and upholding core organizational and fire service values: discipline, honor, courage.

In addition to discussing these important topics, the JobTlks team wraps up the day by discussing the importance of ensuring service members set themselves up for a successful transition from military service, regardless of occupational aspiration. The team highlights the importance of understanding that while the transition from military life to the civilian sector can be daunting, it can also be an incredible opportunity to succeed. One of the best ways to ensure a successful transition is to ensure you have a plan. The fire service offers many of the benefits that service members feel the military provided them: camaraderie, a sense of fulfillment and passion, structure, and of course, some excitement!

Welcome back for another episode of #JobTlks. In this week’s episode, we start with a #fireservice shout-out. This shoutout is different in that it is a local shoutout to one of the mentors of the #JobTlks team. Barrey takes the time to offer thanks to a member of the Cambridge Fire Department, Division 2 Aide Rich Rycroft. Barrey highlights an incident at work in which FF Rycroft took the time to share his knowledge and invest in younger members, sharing his operational experience and insight. Seasoned firefighters such as FF Rycroft represent the best aspects of fire service culture: enthusiasm, positivity, a willingness to invest in junior members, and always striving to leave the job a better place.

From here, the JobTlks team dives into the concept of #fitness in the fire service. At the beginning of the episode, Barrey opens by defining just what exactly it means to be fit for duty, noting that in many cases, it is multi-faceted: physical, mental, and emotional, and that for many members, the definition can vary. From here, the team offers their personal definitions of fitness, thoughts on the journey to maintain operational readiness and health, and discusses why maintaining a strong foundation is critical to a healthy and fulfilling career as well as retirement.

As the conversation progresses, the team discusses topics such as the growing trend of functional fitness, the increasing emphasis on firefighter health and wellness, as well as the topic of mandatory physical fitness and wellness assessments. As the episode closes, the teams highlight the idea that no matter what you do, stay healthy, and get moving to ensure members not only enjoy a fulfilling career but a long and healthy retirement.

Welcome back for another episode of #JobTlks. In this week’s episode, we start with a #fireservice shout out. This shout highlights all the first responders from local, regional, state or federal agencies who responded to provide aid and assistance in the wake of Hurricane Ian. The tireless work of these professionals truly highlights the spirit of fire and emergency services.

From here the team dives into this weeks topic: #scba confidence. While the fire service truly is an all-hazards agency with many specialties, the premise of this episode is to ensure members are mastering the basics. The JobTlks team discusses what is means to have SCBA confidence, and that beyond being technically and tactically competent with the tool members must be mentally prepared to use SCBA’s under extreme exertion.

The JobTlks team highlights tools and techniques to not only master the physical but the mental game of SCBA use, such as use in confined spaces and under significant workload. The team further discusses the concept of ROAM (Rules of Air Management) and how to potential conserve air in a #mayday event.

After wrapping up the discussion on SCBA confidence the team transitions to breaking down a firefighter #tactics video and provides real time analysis and feedback on a first due response. Welcome back to JobTlks for Episode 3 of Season 2!  In this episode, #JobTlks starts a two-part series centered around apparatus innovation and design for both the #engine company and the #ladder company. The team starts the day with a shoutout to Pawtucket, RI firefighters for their #rescue of multiple trapped civilians from an occupied residence on August 10th, 2022 during the height of the summer heat wave, highlighting the hazards of the fireground are not only limited to the operational realm, but the environmental as well.

From here the team talks everything engine company design and function, and how to build one from the ground up based on the unique operational needs of the communities they are designed to serve. This episode is special in that it is directly sourced from the #JobTlks Discussion Group and user submitted content regarding considerations when purchasing new apparatus.   Topics such as hose-loads, tank options, pump panel locations, tools and equipment as well as operation specific requirements between urban and rural systems are all discussed. The team highlights the sheer complexity and unique nature of apparatus design, and what factors might be important to consider to ensure engines serve to enhance operational performance on the fire ground.
