Welcome back to JobTlks for Episode 20! The #JobTlks team is fresh back from Season #1 and ready to dive into Season #2. In this episode, the JobTlks welcomes a very special guest to talk about #wildland #firefighting. Shaun Sullivan of the Portsmouth, NH  Fire Department IAFF Local 1313 joins the JobTlks team to talk about every aspect of wildland firefighting, career options, and #tactics.

Shaun’s background in wildland firefighting is impressive, with 11 Years of federal wildland firefighting experience ranging from operating on an urban-interface engine, hot-shot crews, as well as a smoke-jumper operating on fires throughout the country. From there the JobTlks team dives into topics such as how to become a career wildland firefighter, what it takes to work on a hot-shot crew or as a smoke jumper, wildland firefighting tactics, and some of the notable fires over Shaun’s career.

It is the hope of the JobTlks team that episodes like this one will highlight the versatility and broad range of fire service careers for those that are interested, and more importantly to highlight the important and often unsung work of wildland firefighting crews across the country.

Welcome to episode 20 and the completion of #JobTlks season one!

It’s been a humbling experience watching this Podcast grow. It wouldn’t have been possible without #firefighters who are passionate about their jobs and departments.

We’ve enjoyed our conversations centered around culture; like learning from failure, #leadership development, and building the best job you’ve ever had. We’ve tried to mix in conversations that are centered around #tactics; like firefighter loadout, #overhaul, and #selfrescue. And we haven’t shied away from the controversial subjects like #ems in the #Fire Service. I think our favorite moments have come from having guests Like #Chief Ikels and Nardelli. And even swinging for the fences and bringing on #JasonPatton for a live show about #mentalhealth.

We have plenty more in the works. So use this #tacticalpause between seasons to catch up on shows you may have missed. Enjoy watching some of our favorite moments. And we will see you all in a few weeks for season 2!

Welcome Back to another JobTlks Podcast. On this episode of JobTlks, the crew discusses #selfrescue and #bailout.

To start off the episode we give a moment of silence for #firefighter Joshua Haynes from Linn County Fire in Kansas. FF Haynes Sustained injuries fighting a fire at a medical complex on June 20th, 2022 and dies as a result of those injuries. He was 35 years old and leaved behind a wife and 3 children. Our thoughts are with both his family and his fire family.

Getting into the main content of the episode, Will plays a clip from a video where you get to see a firefighter bail out of building only seconds before the space had been in has a #flashover. You can view the full video here:

After the video, Will talks about #projectmayday. Project MAYDAY analyzed files from over 3,000 #fires where a #MAYDAY was called. What they found was there were 16 phrases in radio calls that preceded a MAY a majority of the time. You can view all the statistics collected by visiting www.projectmayday.net

After discussing some of the data gathered by Project MAYDAY, the crew has an open discussion on self rescue and what it means to them individually. They give their thoughts and opinions on self rescue including prevention, recognition, and bailout.

Once the discussion shifts to bail out, they play a video from the #FDNY “Black Sunday” fire, where Jeff Cool was interviewed. The crew discusses some alternate techniques for getting out of tough situations in a burning building when below grade.

In a slight change of pace, the crew #reacts to a #helmetcam video of a fire. The video shows an aggressive fire company go interior on a well involved #structure fire. The crew point out several things they notice during the fire after reviewing the Project MAYDAY data. Welcome back to JobTlks for Episode 15! This episode is all about the LEAST controversial topic in the #firehouse: #EMS. Just kidding, we know this topic is the culprit of many a heated debate, but it doesn’t have to be. As always, the JobTlks team dives into the issues we feel are relevant, important, and of conversation in the fire service from a positive lens. So why is Barrey wearing a bullet proof vest? Because were talking EMS in the Fire Service!

While acknowledging the potential for heated debate, the JobTlks team attempts to dive into why EMS has become such a divisive issue and asks the question: what is the role of EMS in the fire service? What are some of the positive aspects of incorporating this capability in your agency? And, if implemented poorly, what are some of the potential drawbacks?

The team examines the role of EMS in a changing fire service as previously highlighted in Episode 13 on All Hazards Agencies. The team dives into the root causes of tension, the importance and historical precedent of EMS in the Fire Service, and perhaps what the future entails. Discussing various system design, the team highlights the sheer variability and uniqueness that can be seen from system to system, noting that there is no perfect system, but there is one that will likely work best for each individual agency. Welcome to Episode 13! In this episode the JobTlks team dives into the concept of being an all #hazards agency and what that means for the future of the #fire #service. The team starts off the conversation by highlighting a promotional video from San Bernadino County Fire Department which can be accessed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2e3zcnzexM This promotional clip does an excellent job of both illustrating and communicating exactly being an all-hazards agency entail.

From there the conversation centers around what exactly being an All Hazards Agency means, and discussing both the significant change, as well as the significant opportunities that arise from no longer “just putting out fires”. The Team unpacks the term, discussing the litany of different roles undertaken in the modern fire service such as #firefighting #hazmat #technical-rescue #dive-rescue, #EMS #rope-rescue #marine-units and much more. The conversation continues and highlights the notion that just because an agency is striving to provide an all-hazards capability, doesn’t mean that the have to use all of the budget, noting that an effective all hazards approach consists not of planning for every conceivable outcome, but planning for the most likely ones given your operational reality, and have a strong base of knowledge to act through the use of SOGs & SOPs and the use of regional assets when necessary.
