Nathan Winston was born with Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency, a rare condition that resulted in the amputation of his left leg at age four. Doctors believed amputation would give him the best opportunity for a full life—but few could have predicted what came next.

Nathan competed in basketball, football and baseball alongside able-bodied athletes. Behind the scenes, he endured chronic pain, broken prosthetics and moments of profound self-consciousness. During one basketball game, he repaired his prosthetic with an Allen wrench and duct tape before returning to the court. Before a high-school baseball game, he built a homemade splint for a cracked prosthetic foot and took the mound without telling his coach.

Nathan eventually played professional baseball and now works as a high-school baseball coach and corrections officer in a youth facility. He shares how coaching, fatherhood and helping vulnerable young people have deepened his sense of purpose.

His message, “Get comfortable being uncomfortable until you get comfortable,” is the foundation of his forthcoming memoir, Next Level Mindset. This conversation explores confidence, resilience, hidden pain, mental health and the decision to finally stop hiding an extraordinary story.

Victoria Nelson left a toxic family environment in Russia at 18 with approximately $500 and a bag of clothes. After rebuilding her life in London, she entered the fashion photography industry, managed demanding personalities and eventually secured work that included a GQ cover. Years later, as a working mother without a completed bachelor’s degree, she challenged another perceived limitation by studying negotiation through programs at Harvard and Columbia.

Today, Victoria is the founder of Power of the Ask, advising leaders and professionals on negotiation, executive communication and conflict under pressure.
