To kick off the first segment of the weekly best of John and Gordy, we talk with Dr. Mary Walden, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker about how the constant pull of technology and cell phones hurts certain practices she is involved in. People often reach for their phones hundreds of times a day to try to “settle” themselves when feeling anxious or unsettled. Tune in!
Then, in the second part of this weeks best of segments, John and Gordy chat with Jim Santelle to discuss the surprising decision by Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson regarding emergency funding for the SNAP food program. The initial order from a district judge required the Trump administration to immediately fund SNAP, but when the case reached Jackson as the assigned justice for that circuit, she issued a stay to prevent immediate action. Jim stated, “It is still a mess, but it’s a procedural vagary, if you will, regrettably in the time of Trump and we need to understand that. Understand that Ketanji Brown Jackson was doing something to preserve the interests of those 42 million people.

The second hour of the John & Gordy show opened with the surprisingly emotional “Edelweiss” from The Sound of Music, which the host joked made him tear up and got him in the holiday spirit, before immediately pivoting to the grim, never-ending saga of the Epstein files.
After that, Jim Santelle began discussing the surprising decision by Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson regarding emergency funding for the SNAP food program. The initial order from a district judge required the Trump administration to immediately fund SNAP, but when the case reached Jackson as the assigned justice for that circuit, she issued a stay to prevent immediate action. John, Gordy and Jim speculated that the justices may have already voted in their private conference last Friday on the legality of the Administration’s tariffs, with a potential majority having voted to strike them down.

John and Gordy are discussing several political and current events topics this morning. They talk about political promises, specifically mentioning a promised debate on the ACA (Affordable Care Act) that they believe will likely be postponed or fall through. They also discuss the scheduled vote for the release of the Epstein files, noting that despite the promise, they expect a delay, possibly until after an upcoming election.
After that, Gordy gets disgusted at John for making over eight cups of coffee, one should use a coffee basket, but for fewer than eight cups, use the funnel. The recommended solution is to use “Bun” brand basket filters, which have higher sides to prevent this issue.
Finally, the guy discuss a pardon drafted by Ed Martin for “fake electors” related to the 2020 election, noting that Martin pardoned himself and that the pardon was meant to cover those “hunted” by the Biden administration for exposing non-existent voting fraud.

The conversation begins with John and Gordy, along with guest Mike McCabe, jokingly commenting on the background music, suggesting it’s designed to drive people crazy with chaos and confusion, much like the current political climate.
A caller named CJ then chimed in to discuss the Affordable Care Act (ACA), using the phrase “put a lipstick on a pig”. He defended the ACA, noting it significantly reduced the number of uninsured Americans.
The discussion then pivoted to Mike McCabe’s post from The Guardian about the baffling complexity of the U.S. healthcare system, which Mike compared to a “Rube Goldberg contraption”. They highlighted the dizzying array of terms like deductibles, co-pays, co-insurance, HMO, PPO, HSA, Cobra, and various consultants and brokers.

John & Gordy started off talking about the Northern Lights in Madison. This quickly transitioned into a segment about their new, obsessive family hobby: capturing mice in a humane trap and then driving out to a field to release them. JAG lamented the constant appearance of mice—one host had already released one that morning—and the tedious, almost minute-by-minute checking of the trap. The situation was so absurd that John admitted he couldn’t stand having a live mouse “wrangling itself” in the trap and that their family pastime was getting “a little obsessive”. JAG ended the segment by discussing a 60 Minutes report detailing how China is buying up vast amounts of U.S. farmland to build data centers.
Also, Judy Davidoff, who is the editor and president of Isthmus publication, was discussing the content of her latest issue focusing on Madison-area nonprofits. Isthmus no longer operates from its own building but utilizes a co-working space called StartingBlock on East Washington Avenue, where Judy and her colleague have two permanent seats.

Johnny Banana and Gordy Grapefruit segue from first hour to a discussion about Republican Senator Ron Johnson’s long-standing belief that healthcare, food, and shelter are “privileges” and not “rights”. They countered Johnson by noting that the number of uninsured Americans dropped significantly from 48 million before the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to 26 million, explaining that a huge chunk of those 26 million would actually qualify for expanded Medicaid, which Wisconsin refuses to implement. Their frustration mounted when they heard Speaker Mike Johnson won’t even commit to bringing the ACA tax subsidies to a vote before they expire.
Finally, they debunked the popular political talking point that SNAP (food stamp) usage exploded under President Biden, citing a chart that showed the number of people receiving SNAP was the same as under President Trump in 2018.
