Rancho Bernardo author Greg Harris joined us to talk about his new book “The Summer of ‘78”.  Greg’s book documents the ultimate road trip of two friends graduating high school and going on a 5-week adventure through California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Oregon.  In the podcast Greg Harris reads a few sections of the book that talk about the launch of the road trip and a crazy run in with the law in Arizona.  Music was a big part of the trip and we share our joy of Boston, REO, Rush, Ted Nugent, Peter Frampton, Rolling Stones, Elton John, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eagles, Jimmy Buffett, America, …  and recount our early days with cassettes and the transition away from 8-track.  We also discuss Greg’s book writing process including his creative process, the help he received in editing, cover design and more.  Greg is a 45-year resident of the Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Penasquitos area, a Mt. Carmel High School graduate, a business consultant and a travel blogger.

Greg Harris and I share thoughts on so many other people and issues including Steve Miller, Peter Frampton, Herman Cook, Volkswagen Bug, Encinitas, Poway High School, Billy Beane, Grand Tetons, Beaver Dam, Columbia River Gorge, high speed drafting, wing vent windows, air conditioning (or lack thereof), Poway Chieftain, Sacramento, Idaho Falls, San Diego, San Jose, senioritis, Tang, Ditto Jeans, Steve Miller Band, Fly Like an Eagle, Pacific Stereo, Pioneer cassette deck, Gatorade, Abba Zabbas, Red Fish Lake, Stanley, Amazon, Kindle, Elite Authors, Dave Fralia and much more.

Michael Bloomberg is about to jump into the race for President as a Democrat. How does his presence change dynamics of the primary race? Should we expect a Billionaire Busy Body just as he was as mayor of New York City? We take a close look at some of the policies Bloomberg pushed forward as mayor and a private citizen. Then we take a look at the OK Boomer flippant remark to disparage old people. We also explore the fate of the thrift stores in Poway as the city is about to embark on a major redevelopment project.

Elizabeth

Warren, the POTUS candidate with a plan for nearly everything, has finally

released her Medicare for All plan.  We

dive in and look at her proposal examining the mathematical, moral and

incentive angles that she is putting forward.

We particularly look at this through the lens of our inalienable rights

of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Does Warren’s policy match up with the founding ideals of our nation?

We also

cover the closing of the Town Park Villas Golf Course in the University City

neighborhood of San Diego.  I reflect on

my memories there as a college student and with my children.  I also share some of our crazy adventures in

“leisure sports” which included golf at this friendly, neighborhood course.

Then we

take a tangent at the top of the show on President Trump and the border wall,

again looking at his policy through the lens of our inalienable rights.  Plus we discuss the Democratic race for POTUS

and my prediction of who may end up getting the nomination.

We share

thoughts on so many other people and issues including the DMV, Real ID,

I was so pleased to get to know Kathryn Cloward and her incredible story.  Kathryn is an award-winning book series author, performing songwriter, media publisher and producer, and serial entrepreneur. She is also the founder and CEO of Kandon Unlimited, Inc., a heart-centered mindful media company intent on creating positive and empowering media for people of all ages.

Our conversation covered so much ground including her childhood dreams,

important values and lessons passed on from her parents, and her relentless

work ethic getting through college and starting her career.  We learned about her life in the corporate

world, the challenges she faced and how her strong belief in herself propelled

her to great achievements as an artist and a business owner.

It was these experiences as a child and as an adult that led to the launch of her Kathryn the Grape brand.  Kathryn (both the author and the character) share important affirmations that help children understand their abilities, specialness and magical powers.  These very same themes drive Kathryn Cloward’s songwriting career for adult audiences.

Sometimes you need to break down before you can break through.

We also discuss numerous other topics including Father Joe, Jennifer Klein, Belly Up Tavern, Navajo, Patrick Henry High School, San Diego State University, Grossmont College, the Great Recession, David Koresh, Waco, Gaby Dow, Steve Dow, gratitude, social and emotional learning, matrix, waffles, joyfulness, authenticity, fear, comfort zones, the color purple, Golden Eagle Insurance, Sears Roebuck, Glengarry Glen Ross, cold calling, National MPS Society, Dora the Explorer, publishing rights, girls softball, The Ripple Effect.

This is such a confusing topic.  How much should you tip?  Who do you tip?  What are the rules?  What are your standards?  Why does tipping seem to happen in the

shadows? How are tips distributed amongst the staff?

I share numerous examples of my own journey as a

person that originally was jaded by the idea of tipping.  Even as an employee that received tips, I was

perplexed by the whole idea and wondered why the system needed to exist this

way.  But I evolved tremendously due to 2

significant events in my life.  I share

those stories in this podcast along with some of my own challenges, sometimes

hypocrisy and much more.  We also explore

the attempts of business owners and government to try to create a better

system.

Help me understand!  Open invitation to people in service industry

to join me in a podcast episode to explore this topic further.

I also get into a number of other issues

Jennifer Klein joined us to talk music, Poway, Synanon and so much more.  We discussed her organic creation process and capturing her emotions in song.  Jennifer shared her experience making her first music video at her Poway home for her song “Lean into Joy”.  We also learned about her experience making the songs “So Good” about a special relationship, “Waste of Time” about feeling not appreciated, and “Passing You By” about cell phones and her children.  Jennifer also shared the thrill of doing a gig at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach.

Then we

dove deep into Jennifer’s childhood story as a member of the Synanon community.  This was a fascinating discussion of living

in a commune, being exposed to Synanon’s therapy process called “The Game” and

her experience as a child in a group that was considered highly

controversial.  Jennifer discussed having

her head shaved as a child and feeling very different around others when

outside the commune.  In spite of some of

the highly charged negative aspects of Synanon, Jennifer shared many positive

experiences as a child in the community.

Jennifer Klein and I also discuss many other interesting people and places including Sinead O’Connor, Alanis Morissette, Encinitas, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Mello Yoga, Barbra Streisand, John Legend, Meghan Trainor, Kacey Musgrave, Tom Petty, Beatles, Old Poway Park, Jewel, Interchange, Pacific Beach, Capri Blue, 4S Ranch, You are Truth, What if Anything was Possible?, Passing You By, Charles Dederich, Chuck Dederich, Synanon Game, Santa Monica, Petaluma, Marin County, Tomales Bay, Oakland, Doris Day, Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Poway is Up and Coming”, Half Moon Bay, Synamilk.
