As both manager and GM of the Padres and he broke down the moves he would make to improve the team’s performance. David shared his recent experiences visiting Coors Field in Denver and legendary Wrigley Field in Chicago.  We also discussed Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium (both new and old), Citi Field in New York and much more.

Then we got into the San Diego Chargers, their move from San Diego, and the motivations and tactics of Dean Spanos during the process.  We also touched on San Diego State Aztecs football and their upcoming season starting in a few weeks.

We touched on so many topics and people including Eric Hosmer, Manny Machado, Luis Urias, Fernando Tatis Jr, Ian Kinsler, Franmil Reyes, Wil Myers, Josh Naylor, Hunter Renfroe, Manuel Margot, Francisco Mejia, Austin Hedges, Mackenzie Gore, Luis Patino, David Weathers, Phillip Rivers, Mark Fabiani, Melvin Gordon, Stan Kroenke.

Rancho Bernardo author, citizen and independent voter, Steve Dow, joined us to discuss his new book: 15 Reasons People Voted for Trump in 2016 and Why These Don’t Apply in 2020.

We traced his roots growing up in New Jersey, reliving the 1985 Villanova Wildcats NCAA victory over Georgetown, and his degree in civil engineering and minor in peace & justice. Then we got into his career, meeting his wife Gaby Dow (a previous guest on the John Riley Project), building a family and being a father and role model for his children.

Then we get into his book, his pent-up need to express himself and the free-flowing stream of consciousness as he wrote the book.  Steve shared a few of the “reasons” in his book and we take time to explore those Trump topics and enjoy adventures on a variety of tangents.

I was given a copy of the book in advance and I found Steve’s presentation to be rational, transparent (Steve will share his biases where they exist), often balanced and supported by well respected sources. It is my opinion that even the strongest Trump supporters will likely agree with many of Dow’s 15 reasons listed in his table of contents, even if they disagree with him on his presentation.

We get into so many topics including solar energy, Carlsbad desalination plant, water resources, farming, artificial intelligence, Andrew Yang, Trump golfing, Obama golfing, tribalism, identity politics, Republican Party, Democratic Party, separation of powers, Hitler, fake news, Denmark, Norway, superhero, banana republics, alternative facts, El Paso, individual rights, MAGA hat, freedom of speech, impeachment, narcissism, robotics, Mad Max, Godfather, root cause analysis, George Orwell, dystopia, Bernie Sanders.

Reverend Doctors Stephen and Abigail Albert joined us to discuss Interfaith Awareness Week here in San Diego County August 11 thru the 18th.  During our conversation we shared stories and experiences of people of different faiths coming together and learning from one another.

We talk about Steve’s Interfaith Manual where he documents 40 different topics, such as violence and love, and then breaks down the perspective of 12 different faiths on each topic.  His discovery, which served as his dissertation project, is that people of all faiths share so many core values and common experiences.

Abigail shared stories about her efforts to bring Interfaith into the education community.  She shared a special story about a Poway High School student and his efforts to help better educate students of all faiths.  Abigail also discussed some of her efforts to try to introduce Interfaith into Poway Unified School District’s events and/or curriculum.

During our discussion we talk extensively about educating people on the other religions in their community.  It is this effort of education, and in particular breaking down the hate and fear, that helps build stronger communities and greater tolerance.  We shared stories about their efforts creating field trips where people of different faiths can learn about other faiths, learn about their customs and be welcomed as a guest in their places of worship.

We touched on a variety current events, in particular the Poway Chabad shooting, and how this idea of breaking down fear can help our society and work towards preventing hate crimes.  We also discussed their efforts in helping Poway heal after the shooting including their coordination of community vigils.

We also discuss many other people and topics including Poway Mayor Steve Vaus, World Interfaith Network, India, Scotland, Ethiopia, UC San Diego, Freedom of Religion, Golden Rule, Platinum Rule, Poway City Council, Poway Sheriff, Rick Love, bullying, religion in schools, racism, Imam Ahmed, Usama Shami.

The Trump response in the aftermath of the El Paso and Dayton shootings was about condolences, condemnation of hate and offering proposals to prevent these incidents from occurring again.  But does the Trump response and his recommended policies actually make a difference?  Do Trump's recommendations violate our civil liberties?  How does his condemnation of hate match up with his rhetoric at campaign rallies?

We speak about the San Diego Padres rough second half and

the future of Andy Green.  We also

congratulate Darren Smith, Marty Caswell and Jordan Carruth on their new sports

talk gig at XTRA 1360.

Then we take an early look at the San Diego County

Supervisors District 2 race and Poway’s Mayor Steve Vaus.  We discuss the money flowing into the Vaus

campaign and more broadly in all of the supervisor races.  We also make note of Rancho Bernardo resident

Carl DeMaio entering the congressional race to face off with Duncan Hunter Jr

and a variety of other candidates.

We also discuss various other issues and people including Mike Pence, El Paso, Dayton, Toledo, mental health, video games, red flag laws, Bill of Rights, death penalty, free speech, Neil deGrasse Tyson, handgun homicides, war on drugs, suicide, Poway High School, Joel Anderson, Poway City Council, Poway School Board, Poway Unified School District, Dianne Jacob, Bill Wells, Matt Rahn, Sam Abed, Larry Wilske, Ammar Campa-Najjar, Pomerado Rd, Ted Williams Parkway, DUI checkpoint, Ray Chavez, Pearl Harbor, Scott Peters, Cliff Branch, Oakland Raiders, Ken Stabler, Dave Casper, Fred Biletnikoff, Marc Van Eeghan.

We take a long look at the tragedies in El Paso and Dayton where 29 people lost their life.  We explore how a flawed philosophy of collectivism and nihilism plays a huge role in these terrible events in El Paso and Dayton.  I spend a great deal of time showcasing how leadership matters, yet sadly we have a president that uses rhetoric that inspires these hate crimes.  Then we discuss ways to impact positive change including embracing self-ownership, self-love and respect for the individual rights of others.  We explore how collectivism fosters hateful behavior and how individualism leads to better outcomes.  We also take a look at the War on Drugs and how that plays a key role in the number of cases of gun violence in America.

Then we get into President Trump and the fierce loyalty he has from his supporters.  Often evidence is ignored, truth does not matter and actual facts are dismissed.  We explore the topics of the First Amendment and the Trade War as examples of how this plays out.  This magnetic loyalty that Trump has with his supporters is real.  He will be a difficult candidate to defeat in 2020.

We also discuss various other issues and people including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., San Diego Padres, Francisco Mejia, Kirby Yates, Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Diego Sports Curse, Pageant of the Masters, Laguna Beach, Luis Urias, Postal Annex, Poway, MAGA, Donald J. Boudreaux, George Mason University, Mercatus Center, tariffs, cronyism, free trade, Trans Pacific Partnership, TPP, Scott Adams, and Dilbert.

In this Self Improvement episode, we break down 8 strategies you can put forth to improve your health.  Many of the themes discussed include valuing your own life, setting boundaries, letting go, and acceptance.  We talk plenty about taking care of yourself first, so you can then take care of other people.  I share my own struggles on each issue and offer up a variety of success stories and personal failures.

I also talk about the purpose of the John Riley Project podcast and what I am trying to accomplish.  Ultimately it is about making an impact in the world around me.  But where can we make the most impact?  In politics, culture or in our own life?  We also have some fun discussing Yacht Rock.  We break down the financial struggles of the Oceanside school district and we explore the recent news on the record median home prices in San Diego County.
