  • Justin Amash, Trump Impeachment JRP0052

Justin Amash (R-MI) tweeted a rationale for impeachment of President Trump.  We break down the entire Justin Amash tweet thread and discuss it within the context of liberty, the Constitution, transparency, accountability, bravery and rule of law.

We also discuss Pete Buttigieg, Poway High Varsity Baseball, Game of

Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Kawhi Leonard, SANDAG, San Diego Padres, Big Stone
Lodge, Wil Myers, Fernando Tatis Jr., Betsy DeVos, Darsh Patel, Marian
Kim-Phelps, Ron Paul, Bernie Sanders, Mike Lee, Rand Paul and Thomas Massie.

Here is the full text of the Justin Amash tweet thread from Saturday, May 18, 2019:

    • Here are my principal conclusions:
      1. Attorney General Barr has deliberately misrepresented Mueller’s report.
      2. President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct.
      3. Partisanship has eroded our system of checks and balances.
      4. Few members of Congress have read the report.
        • I offer these conclusions only after having
        • read Mueller’s redacted report carefully and completely, having read or watched
pertinent statements and testimony, and having discussed this matter with my
staff, who thoroughly reviewed materials and provided me with further analysis.

          • In comparing Barr’s principal conclusions,
          • congressional testimony, and other statements to Mueller’s report, it is clear
that Barr intended to mislead the public about Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s
            analysis and findings.
            • Barr’s misrepresentations are significant but
            • often subtle, frequently taking the form of sleight-of-hand qualifications or
logical fallacies, which he hopes people will not notice.
              • Under our Constitution, the president “shall
              • be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery,
or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” While “high Crimes and Misdemeanors” is
not defined, the context implies conduct that violates the public trust.
                • Contrary to Barr’s portrayal, Mueller’s report
                • reveals that President Trump engaged in specific actions and a pattern of
behavior that meet the threshold for impeachment.
                  • In fact, Mueller’s report identifies multiple
                  • examples of conduct satisfying all the elements of obstruction of justice, and
undoubtedly any person who is not the president of the United States would be
                    indicted based on such evidence.
                    • Impeachment, which is a special form of
                    • indictment, does not even require probable cause that a crime (e.g.,
obstruction of justice) has been committed; it simply requires a finding that
an official has engaged in careless, abusive, corrupt, or otherwise
                      dishonorable conduct.
                      • While impeachment should be undertaken only in
                      • extraordinary circumstances, the risk we face in an environment of extreme
partisanship is not that Congress will employ it as a remedy too often but
rather that Congress will employ it so rarely that it cannot deter misconduct.
                        • Our system of checks and balances relies on
                        • each branch’s jealously guarding its powers and upholding its duties under our
Constitution. When loyalty to a political party or to an individual trumps
loyalty to the Constitution, the Rule of Law—the foundation of
                          liberty—crumbles.
                          • We’ve witnessed members of Congress from both
                          • parties shift their views 180 degrees—on the importance of character, on the
principles of obstruction of justice—depending on whether they’re discussing
                            Bill Clinton or Donald Trump.
                            • Few members of Congress even read Mueller’s
                            • report; their minds were made up based on partisan affiliation—and it showed,
with representatives and senators from both parties issuing definitive
statements on the 448-page report’s conclusions within just hours of its
                              release.
                              • America’s institutions depend on officials to
                              • uphold both the rules and spirit of our constitutional system even when to do
so is personally inconvenient or yields a politically unfavorable outcome. Our
Constitution is brilliant and awesome; it deserves a government to match it.
                                • All about loyalty and tearing people down rather
                                • than a discussion or debate.  Toxic environment.

                                      • Chris Olps’ Poway Announcement, JRP0050

Chris Olps joined us to make his official

announcement as a 2020 candidate for Poway City Council.

We covered Chris Olps’ life story his

family renting a home near Twin Peaks Rd and Community Rd and then later buying
in The Grove.  His formative years in
Poway shaped Chris where he played Little League at Tierra Bonita Elementary
School, rode his bike to Lake Poway, and learned to swim at Rancho Arbolitos Swim
& Tennis Club.  Chris participated in
the Poway High wrestling program, the swim team and the water polo team.  Chris also worked as a lifeguard for 2
summers at Poway High.  Chris’ roots are
in Poway and he is proud to call it his hometown.  Now Chris and his wife and son own a home in
the Garden Rd area of Poway.

Chris Olps volunteered on the site

council at Garden Road Elementary School and was an appointee on the City of
Poway’s Budget Review Committee.  We retrace
Chris’ previous campaigns, the appointment process for other city council openings
and Chris’ learnings and observations along the way.

So many other issues are discussed

including the Poway Road Specific Plan, the challenge with building up to the
sidewalk (no setbacks) and the problems with widening Poway Rd, finding an additional
east-west route and traffic issues in Poway.
We spend time discussing various projects in Poway including The
Outpost, the Poway Community Center (The Mickey Cafagna Center, or the Poway Multi-Generational
Center) and the Espola Rd project.  So
many names come up in the conversation including Mayor Steve Vaus, John Mullin,
Barry Leonard, Dave Grosch, Caylin Frank, Torrey Powers and more.  We discuss the financial challenges facing
Poway and strategies to prevent future deficit spending.

categories.  Often we will retreat to
that Comfort Zone.  It may be a place, a
state of mind, a bad habit, or just an auto-pilot routine.  But ultimately, it prevents you from personal
                                          growth.

It’s difficult to extract yourself from a comfort zone.  Sometimes you can find yourself drifting without realizing you really are stuck.  To get out of it, we need to accept reality, take personal responsibility and then be willing to take a risk and be uncomfortable.  Small steps, journaling and visualization along the way are very helpful.

I share some of my own challenges with leaving a comfort zone.  This podcast is one example of how I am pushing myself to try new things and get into a new zone that is challenging, uncomfortable but exhilarating.

                                          In this

episode I also take a moment to reflect on the tragic murder of Jackson Weller,
a promising young man, University of New Mexico baseball player and friend of
                                          my son Trevor.

                                          I also

share my thoughts on a number of other topics and special people including Alex

(queue the Mighty 1090 Hacksaw voice) Take a walk down memory lane….
We start off discussing the early days of the Mighty
690 as they transitioned from a news station to 2nd all sports radio
format in America.  Everything must start
with Lee Hacksaw Hamilton and the Best 15 Minutes in Radio.  The Mighty 690 and Lee Hamilton were a huge
part of my life in the 1990s as I transitioned from a San Francisco sports fan
to fully embracing San Diego sports.  We
get into all of Hacksaw’s memorable catch phrases, the ego and the voice.  We talk about his visit to Mama Cella’s in
Rancho Bernardo and the great interview Scott Kaplan had with him earlier this
                                            year.

We discuss the growth of the Mighty 690 starting with Jim Rome and his Scrub Saturday Show.  Then we watch his meteoric rise to national super stardom.  We discuss the Boom Town Rats, The Clones, Block Heads, The Gloss, Jim Everett, national syndication, his great interview style and a great interview he had with the Mighty 1090’s Darren Smith about his early days in San Diego.
We get into so many others in the early days of San

forget the days when the Mighty 690 was the home of the San Diego

Then we get into the Mighty 1090 era.  We discuss lovable Coach John Kentera, including the amazing impersonation by Jeff Dotseth.  We discuss the Great Friends, Scott Kaplan, Billy Ray Smith, Torrey Pines Baseball, Darren Smith, Marti Caswell, High IQ sports radio, Ben Higgins, Steven Woods, Dan Sileo, Low IQ sports radio and Hacksaw’s time in television.
                                            I talk
about the conditions that led me to drift away from AM radio and then wonder
about the future of these great personalities.

Poway is still coming to terms. The shock and pain from the shooting at the Congregation Chabad of Poway has been overwhelming In this podcast I share my thoughts on the reactions of fellow Powegians. We also discuss ideas to move forward positively.
                                            In Solidarity after Poway Shooting
We discuss the Poway community rallying in support and solidarity with the Chabad. There were various vigils hosted in Poway where people joined to cry together, pray together and support one another.  We discuss the leadership of Mayor Steve Vaus and the tone he struck with people in the community.  Then we talk at length about Poway Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps and her efforts to drive out hate.  We discuss the goodness of Lori Gilbert-Kaye, who lost her life that day.  Later we talk about Rabbi Goldstein and his trip to Washington DC for the National Day of Prayer.
                                            Driving Out Hate
I took time to talk with friends and neighbors both in person and in social media.  The grief in the community was strong. However, people people were offering quality ideas to bring people together to drive out hate.  We talk also about addressing reality (This IS Poway) and expressing love. This leads us to a discussing cultures, religions and traditions.
I spoke at length about the topic of Identity Politics, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Declaration of Independence, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.  Then we get into Free Speech, Hate Speech and difficult conversations.
I invite my fellow community members to join me for a podcast conversation about the Poway shooting.  I would enjoy learning your thoughts. Let's hope our neighbors can learn and grow as we work our way through these difficult issues.

                                          • Happy Taxation-is-Theft Day! JRP0045
It’s April 15th and so we celebrate two important
events, one good and the other bad.  The good
news is that we celebrate Jackie Robinson Day in MLB paying homage to one of
baseball’s all-time greats and a man of huge cultural significance in American history.  The bad news is that our taxes filings (and
                                            often payments) are due.
In this podcast we make the moral argument against the
federal income tax and many other taxes that exist at the federal and state
levels.  Taxation is coercive.  Taxation forces people to pay for initiatives
they do not want nor support.  Tax policy
is used by the powerful and influential to rig markets, pit one group of people
against the other, and reward some at the expense of many.  Taxes fund immoral and foolish wars,
corporate welfare, a mass incarceration state and a variety of other unethical
                                            and immoral policies.
We look at taxation through the lens of our
inalienable rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness and point out
the conflict.  We look at taxation
through the ideal of Equality under the Law and point out the conflict.  We look at taxation as one would in a Free
and Open Society and point out the conflict.
In this podcast we cover many topics including taxation as theft, the social contract, oppression of minorities, greed, taxation as punishment, fair share, trickle down, Tax Freedom Day, the history of the federal income tax, SALT deductions, tariffs, sales tax, corporate tax, property tax, federal income tax, state income tax, gas tax, the tax code as a social engineering model, electric vehicles, the cost of college, Poway Unified’s Billion Dollar Bond, taxation as a model of intolerance, progressive taxation, Amazon, Dept of Commerce, interest on the national debt, Social Security, education and roads.
We discuss various people including Rand Paul,
Thomas Sowell, Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Milton Friedman,
Dwight Eisenhower, John Collins and Richard Rider.
                                            Fair Warning:
                                            This podcast is provocative.  Hang
                                            on to your hat!

Michael Ryan joined me to share his
incredible story battling for his life after sustaining a brain injury in a
high school football game.  His story is
about facing great challenges and finding the will deep inside to fight and emerge
                                            victorious.
He retraced his life up to the point
of the injury, the football game detail of the hit, and the tremendous number of
obstacles he had to overcome in his recovery.
He was literally on the edge of losing his life as doctors struggled to
                                            stop the hemorrhage.  Complications led
to further problems in his gut and additional surgeries.  But he set goals, he fought hard and he persevered.
Mike’s podcast ended up being much more
than a football story.  It was his own
                                            auto biography.
Mike Ryan grew up in San Diego in an ethnically mixed family and a racially mixed neighborhood.  His childhood home often was a place of alcoholism and violence.  But he found support from his extended family and a close-knit group of friends in his community.  Mike shared stories about his father’s struggle with PTSD, his mother’s Jehovah Witness faith and the support he received from his grandmother and siblings.  We went down memory lane reliving stories from his days at Hoover High School, the special moment when he met his wife Galit and their marriage nearly 24 years ago.  Mike spoke at length about his love of his family and shared many entertaining family stories involving Galit and his children Tommy and Sarah.
Mike Ryan is a Poway resident,
author, family man, sports fan, martial artist and a Datsun car enthusiast.  His book The Heart of the Lion is available on
                                            Amazon.

                                          • Bob Pasela, Sabuku Sushi, JRP0043
It was an ordinary day when Zeke and
I stepped into Sabuku Sushi to have lunch and discuss business.  We were not prepared with who we
                                            encountered.  Sabuku Sushi owner Bob
Pasela greeted us at our table with a surge of energy and enthusiasm.  He showcased his menu, his creative
innovations in sushi, his tablet ordering technology and his entire
restaurant.  Immediately I knew this was
someone we needed to interview in a future podcast.
                                            This podcast interview with Bob
Pasela was so much more than I had originally anticipated.  How does a Polish guy from Western
Pennsylvania raised on meat & potatoes comfort food end up as a sushi bar
                                            owner?
Bob Pasela traces his time in San Diego starting as a deep-sea fisherman tasting raw tuna on a fishing boat for the first time.  This spark for sushi turned into an obsession of exploring sushi bars, studying the techniques of the top chefs and eventually experimenting with sushi creations at home.  His new hobby as a sushi chef turned out to be a hit with this friends as he soon became in demand for private parties.  At that point the idea of owning a sushi bar started to become more than just a fleeting wish.  It would eventually become a reality.
Bob Pasela began his career as a financial advisor with an entrepreneurial streak and a ton of hustle.  He was regularly a top performer in securing new clients and helping them grow their investment portfolios.  He had seen many clients build business plans for restaurants and knew what it would take to do it himself.  So, he eventually took the leap and started Sabuku Sushi.
It was remarkable to learn about the
challenges he faces as a restaurant owner.
Good employees are hard to find.  Young
people that haven’t figured out their plan in life are easy to hire, but often have
no passion for the work and can disappear in an instant.  This puts pressure on the entrepreneur as he
has to step in to fill the void as a chef, a server, a prep cook, a dishwasher
or a bus boy.  Plus, as an entrepreneur
he is always changing hats from customer service to financial management to
marketing to strategic planning.  It’s exciting.  It’s stressful.  It’s rewarding.
I was blown away by the amount of
money Bob had to spend just to get his restaurant started.  After securing the 1500 sq. ft. lease and
hiring an architect, he had to pay the City of San Diego $25,000 just to
approve his plans.  After he made investments
in cooking equipment, kitchen resources, restaurant furniture and amenities, he
was out of pocket $300,000 before a single customer walked into his door.  It takes a special type of business person
with tremendous drive and tenacity to overcome these challenges and persevere.  No wonder the failure rate of restaurants is
so high.  Most are not like Bob Pasela and
don’t have what it takes to be successful.
                                            Bob shared stories of observing
other sushi chefs focused on quality, but still largely creating the “same old”
offerings for customers.  Bob wanted to combine
this obsession with quality sea food with his hometown roots in comfort food and
do sushi like nobody has ever done it.  Ever
thought of a sushi roll with bacon?  Bob
                                            has, and it’s awesome.
As an entrepreneur Bob shared some
of his challenges running a single restaurant and the difficulty in scaling revenue
and production.  Bob has since come up
with a new “non-restaurant” concept called Munchi Bowl that gives other
restaurants the ability to make simple, comfort food menu items in their kitchens
during hours when they are underutilized.
Munchi Bowl becomes a single online menu combined with an unlimited
number of pick up or delivery options depending on the participation of other
restaurants in the cooperative business model.
This is another example of Bob’s innovative mind seeking ways to offer
value to customers while creating business opportunity for his team and others.
As an entrepreneur Bob is living his
life on his own terms and has the liberty to pursue...
