  • Caleb Allen, Baseball Coach, JRP0032

I had a great conversation with Caleb Allen talking baseball and how the sport translates into great life lessons.

Caleb Allen is the Varsity Baseball Hitting Coach at Westview High School in the Poway Unified School District.  Caleb has served in various coaching roles at Poway High School, El Camino High School and San Diego Christian College.  He also ran the San Diego Crush travel baseball program helping build a solid organization with a tremendous coaching staff.

Caleb Allen is a protégé of local hitting guru Deron Johnson who has coached a long list of MLB players, minor leaguers and collegiate hitters.  Johnson’s approach is as much about mechanics as it is about the mental side of the game.  Deron Johnson taught Caleb that the mechanical side can be built through the mental side.  It’s about coaching hitters on achieving certain feelings which ultimately gets the hitters executing the right mechanics.

We explore how lessons taught in baseball are valuable in
all parts of life.  With hitting it is
about having a plan, attacking and never giving in to the pitcher.  Caleb highlighted the quote “never give up
bat speed for making contact” which is another way of saying not to be
tentative but instead give it everything you’ve got.

Caleb Allen shared the story of Dylan Mulholland who tried out for his high school team multiple times and always got cut.  But the kid loved baseball and he ended up making the team as a senior year.  About 8 years later Caleb learned that Dylan was playing baseball professionally in Canada, working at a batting cage facility, planned a baseball game for his bachelor party and continues to live the baseball dream.

We share more stories involving major leaguers Cole Hamels, Kevin Newman, Austin Wynns, Chris Bando and Sal Bando.  We get into the crazy stories of out-of-control parents in club baseball and Caleb’s challenges managing both players and parents.  We get into Mike Matheny’s Manifesto about the role parents should play in supporting their child in competitive sports.  Caleb shares his own recruiting story and offers numerous tips for players and parents as they go through their own recruiting process.

Westview opens up their 2019 season on Saturday February 16th against Grossmont High School.

  • Howard Schultz, Super Bowl JRP0031

Is Howard Schultz a viable candidate for President of the United States? Or is he simply a spoiler candidate that has no chance of winning at all?

We explore the candidacy of Howard Schultz candidacy from a number of different angles. The reaction from the media and from the left has been swift and severe, particularly because he is choosing to run as a Centrist Independent. Many fear Howard Schultz will split the Dem vote and make it easier for Trump to win re-election in 2020. Others simply object to Schultz because he is a billionaire.

I don't necessarily agree. I think many Republicans will consider Schultz when their other choices are a far left progressive representing the Democrats and Trump representing Republicans. There is a large swath of the GOP that only reluctantly support Trump simply because they don't want a leftist in the White House. A "corporate democrat" may be more appealing to them then Trump's lack of integrity, lack of morality and his foolish policies of a Trade War, a Wall, massive debt and more.

I explore this issue further from the perspective of the stranglehold that the Republicans and Democrats have on the election process and the Presidential Debates in particular. In 2016 voters were desperate for a 3rd choice as an alternative to Trump and Clinton. Could Schultz play the role of breaking the Rep/Dem Duopoly?

We also explore a wide range of other issues including Super Bowl LIII, Joe Namath, New Years Resolutions, the San Diego Padres, Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, WorldProgress.org, local politics in Chula Vista and Poway, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and legendary Green Bay Packers Head Coach Vince Lombardi.

  • Padres Finances Acee Reaction JRP0030
Kevin Acee's article in last Sunday's paper (titled "Look at Padres' books shows debt reduction has team in position to spend") about Padres Finances has created a huge reaction on #PadresTwitter and in the national media. It is was a rare moment where team ownership partly opening up their books for public viewing.  There were many nuggets that somewhat explained Padre management decisions, but also invoked anger, frustration and betrayal within the fan base.

We discuss the concept of the team as a community trust vs a business entity. We explore Padres Finances in terms of paying down debt, building a sustainable business model for long term performance and a disciplined business process.

Do die-hard fans trust Ron Fowler and Peter Seidler? Are they likely to cut and run like previous owners? Or are Fowler and Seidler committed to a long-term plan for San Diego has evidenced by their philanthropy and work to help the homeless crisis?

I suggest that the Padres finally have a solid baseball operations plan. The team has the best minor league system in baseball largely due to good draft choices and an $80M investment in international free agents.

#HotTalentLava is real. But can the fans be patient?

We break down the Padres starting lineup position by position. We discuss the potential of adding Manny Machado to the roster and what type of ticket sales will be necessary to cover his salary. We also get into the #FireAndyGreen movement.

In The Good, The Bad and The Ugly segment, we look at Poway High School Boys and Girls Basketball, Tom Brady, Phil Mickelson, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Crow’s Nest BMX Pump Track, NFL Playoffs, NFL Overtime Rules, the Kansas City Chiefs Curse, Miguel Cabrera and Darren McFadden.

We also take a moment to discuss tonight’s Mountain West basketball games. The San Diego State Aztecs take on old coach Justin Hutson and his Fresno State Bulldogs. The New Mexico Lobos go to Vegas to face UNLV.

  • San Diego State of the City, JRP0029

In this JRP episode we breakdown the San Diego State of the City Address from Mayor Kevin Faulconer.  We discuss Faulconer’s proposals to address the biggest issues facing San Diego:  the housing crisis and homelessness.  I was particularly pleased to see the Mayor offering market-based solutions that relax building regulations and zoning laws to make it easier and cheaper to build more housing.  I thought his innovative approach to unlimited density in exchange for accommodations for affordable housing and the homeless was a great proposal.  We also touch on a variety of other initiatives in his San Diego State of the City Address including Safe Parking, the homeless near the San Diego Sports Arena, micro units, granny flats, NIMBY vs YIMBY, expansion of bike lanes, Clean SD Initiative, the bike lane along the San Diego River, Pure Water Initiative, Community Choice Energy and the Trolley at the Airport.

I share my thoughts on a
wide variety of topics in a new segment I call The Good, The Bad and the
Ugly.  We celebrate the work of Tyler
Couvrette, applaud the San Diego State Aztec basketball team and discuss recent
good work by Congressmen Justin Amash (R-MI) and Scott Peters (D-CA).  Then I highlight the Bad and the Ugly with
the Government Shutdown, the grudge match between Speaker Pelosi and President
Trump, the White House Reception for the Clemson Tiger National Champion
football team and the irrational reaction to Senator Rand Paul’s hernia
    surgery.

Finally, I present new developments with the John Riley Project and seek the input of my audience on the overarching theme of promoting Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.  I discuss my recent social media campaign and invite listeners into my private Facebook group called The John Riley Project – Insiders Group where I offer bonus content not available in my other podcast channels.

Plus I share my recent adventure to Albuquerque, my boondoggle to Santa Fe and my upcoming trip to San Luis Obispo including more visits to California Missions.

  • John Maffei, San Diego Sports, JRP0028

I was so pleased to enjoy a conversation with San Diego sportswriter legend, John Maffei. John is a 50-year veteran in sports journalism, an athlete, a coach and a major behind-the-scenes person that has made a significant, positive impact in the San Diego sports community.
We spent time learning about John's life. Born in Chicago, raised in Pasadena, went to La Salle High School, recruited to play baseball at St Mary’s but chose to play at Pasadena City College and later at San Diego State. John Maffei shared his memories as a teammate of Darrell Evans while at Pasadena City College. Evans' talent helped lead their baseball team (and basketball team) to state championships. Evans played professionally for the Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants and the 1984 World Series Champion Detroit Tigers.
John Maffei formed a strong relationship with basketball coaching legend Jerry Tarkanian who was the head basketball coach at Pasadena. John was a part of Tark's support staff helping him keep the game book while John was not playing baseball. Tarkanian offered John a full ride scholarship to Long Beach State when Tark was hired there (prior to his career at UNLV and Fresno St), but John politely declined the offer because he wanted to keep his baseball dream alive.
We spent time going down memory lane of John’s time at San Diego State as the sports editor of the Daily Aztec and player on the baseball team.  John shared a special relationship with football coach Don Coryell and helped him recruit athletes to play for the Aztecs.  John Maffei spoke at length of his time as a manger in the California Collegiate Summer League where he played against incredible baseball talent including one game facing both Mike Scott and Jesse Orosco in a double header.  We touched on a baseball tour he did Alaska playing in the Midnight Sun games, including sharing fun memories of Bob Moss (Hubba Jubba!).
No story of San Diego sports is complete without recounting wonderful stories of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn.  John Maffei shared his special moments with Tony in the Padres dugout after batting practice and sharing Tony’s desire to make a positive impact with each fan he interacted with.
It was fun to discuss so many incredible athletes from the Poway, Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Penasquitos area including Tony Gwynn Jr., Cole Hamels, Trevor Williams, Eric Chavez, Jaime Jones and Billy Beane.  We shared stories about both Deron and Dominick Johnson, including Dom’s incredible talent as a basketball player before becoming a modern-day pitching guru on par with Tom House.
I am leaving so much out in this written summary.  We also shared stories about John Wooden, the San Diego Sports Arena, the 2019 Padres outlook and their minor league system, Qualcomm Stadium, Rashaan Salaam, La Jolla Country Day High School, Marcus Allen's incredible performance in a CIF title game, Ricky Williams, Alex Smith, Rancho Bernardo vs Montgomery baseball, Kevin Towers and so much more.

  • Government Shutdown, JRP0027

We get into a long list of national news issues including the wall along the southern border, President Trump, immigration policy and the federal government shutdown. We spent time discussing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Pay-Go, the Green New Deal, Medicare-for-All and much more.

The border wall is political theater. Trump is playing his base. The $5 billion spending plan is 1/1000th of the federal budget but only covers approximately 200 miles of the nearly 2000 miles of the southern border. The purpose of this issue is to divide the nation, fire up his base and serve as a distraction to far larger problems facing the Trump Administration.

Illegal immigration is a low priority problem relative to wars, $22 trillion federal debt, $1 trillion deficit, structural deficits in Medicare and Social Security, foreign nations, corporate welfare, incarceration state, surveillance state and more.

How do we solve this problem? America was founded on the basis of Inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The wall represents the opposite of these rights. The wall is the opposite of freedom, by definition. The wall is a symbol of the failure of America's immigration policy. The solution is to expand legal immigration.

I explain this in more detail in this podcast as well as get into issues with the government shutdown, how the government shutdown is not a shutdown, national parks, hypocrisy by both Republicans and Democrats, the Washington Monument Syndrome, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, her objection to Pay-Go, immorality of adding more debt, her proposal for a 70% top marginal tax rate, Green New Deal, Medicare-for-All, Republicans falling into trap of mocking AOC, GOP failure to engage in a battle of ideas on moral grounds, the importance of wedge issues and the similarities of the two parties.

  • Poway Titans Hoops, Ironman JRP0026

This is the first in a whole series of sports podcasts I plan to share on the John Riley Project. In this episode we talk about Poway Titans highlights and many other topics:

Congratulations to Cathedral Catholic on a great football season winning the Southern California championship and coming up just short in the state championship game.

Palomar League Basketball for both boys and girls as of December 31, 2018. Scores, updates and comments on the Poway Titans, Adam Sevier, Lucas Shepard, Rancho Bernardo Broncos, Del Norte Nighthawks, Mt Carmel Sun Devils, Westview Wolverines and the Mission Vista Timberwolves. Union Tribune Top 10 Poll results.

Coverage of the Ironman 70.3 held in December in Indian Wells and La Quinta CA, including the performance of Poway Titans alumnus Shannon Riley. 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run totaling 70.3 miles. Tremendous, driven athletes put on a show. Great energy!

Thoughts on San Diego Padres General Manager AJ Preller and the team's activities this off-season. Why such little action at the MLB Winter Meetings? Thoughts on the Ian Kinsler signing. I also have some fun and make my own 2019 25-man roster projection including signing Manny Machado and packing major league and minor league players in a deal for a #1 starting pitcher like Noah Syndergaard from the New York Mets, Marcus Stroman from the Toronto Blue Jays or Corey Kluber from the Cleveland Indians. Plus positive shout outs to Poway Titans alumni Alex Dickerson that just resigned with the San Diego Padres organization and Connor Joe that was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the MLB Rule 5 draft.

Mixed feelings on the LA Chargers making the 2019 playoffs and hints of a #SanDiegoSportsCurse podcast in our future.

  • Marian Kim-Phelps, Hate JRP0025

I enjoyed showcasing the great work of 3 local leaders (Marian Kim-Phelps, Chris Cruse and Amit Asaravala) and offered my thoughts and commentary on each topic:

Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps, Poway Unified School District Superintendent, published a guest column titled No Place for Hate in response to the recent hate crime in Poway. Marian Kim-Phelps is putting forward 4 policies at PUSD to address hate: organizing students to pledge to end hate, encouraging difficult conversations, adults modeling good behavior and speaking out to the injustice. I speak to these policies and also discuss individualism vs collectivism as it relates to hate crimes.

Chris Cruse, a community activist in Poway, is doing analysis on Poway's water and sewer rates and asking tough questions about the City's accounting procedures and if funds are intermingled with the City's operating budget. I discuss the City of Poway's upcoming water and sewer rate workshop and pontificate on issues related to the economics of water and innovations to provide more water to our region.

Amit Asaravala put forth a guest column titled Climate Change Begins at Home where he explores green technologies that homeowners and local government officials can take advantage of right away to not only make for a cleaner planet but also to save a tremendous amount of money. I explain my own personal story with solar panels and the huge financial savings we are enjoying. I also comment extensively on our family's embrace of electric vehicle technology and the financial benefits that are available. No conversation with environmental technology is complete without commentary on the government subsidies that are available and whether such subsidies are fiscally prudent, economically sound or even moral.

  • Poway Stoneridge, PUSD Ethics, JRP0024

Reactions to the Stoneridge Development public forum on Dec 12th, Ethics issues with Poway Unified School Board, Patreon controversy, free speech and thoughts & recommendations on the shows I am streaming online.

Kevin McNamara stepped up to the stage originally to make a 2 minute welcome speech but it turned into a 30+ minute question and answer session from the audience. The questions were direct, sometimes hard hitting and reflected the many concerns of Poway citizens, many of which that live on or near the Stoneridge golf course.

People wanted to know about the price of the homes, the value of the homes, the traffic impact, the number of new kids in the schools, water issues and much more.

Kevin McNamara also explained the business relationship he has with Stoneridge property owner Michael Schlessinger. It is an option to buy agreement that gives McNamara the ability to buy the land if his plan is approved by the Poway City Council.

The plan will be submitted to the Poway City Council before December 31, 2018. Then the City will run the proposal through environmental impact studies and various other tests to ensure the plan meets necessary requirements. Once those hurdles are cleared, the issue will go before the voters in November 2020.

Voters ultimately will be voting to rezone the Stoneridge Country Club property to recategorize it for residential. Currently Stoneridge is zoned for open space recreational.

If voters reject the November 2020 ballot measure, then the situation reverts back to the status quo. Schlessinger will remain the owner of the property, the golf course will remain shuttered, chain link fencing will remain and the land will continue to go fallow.

  • Poway Hate Crime, #Tariffman, JRP0023

We review the terrible Poway Hate Crime incident when hoolums spray painted a swastika on a Jewish family's home on the first day of hanukkah. Bravo to Marianna Benedict-Bacilla for organizing a vigil and protest that received significant coverage from local media.

Naturally this get us into the idea of why we call it a Hate Crime in the first place.

    * Why do we do it?* No place for hate, racism, bigotry, protected classes, political correctness* History, Holocaust, etc.* Freedom of Religion, tolerance, peace* Calling it a Hate Crime does create divisiveness. It becomes immediately politicized.* now certain types of hate are called hate crimes, but other types of hate are not* and some groups (race, religion, etc.) are protected, but other groups are not protected* it creates double standards, rather than treating everyone equally under the law* Hate crime law is really about vengeance* if a Joe intentionally murders Bob because Bob stole his girlfriend, he gets a sentence of X years, but if Joe intentionally murders Bob because Bob is of a protected group then he gets a sentence of X+Y years* X = justice, Y = vengeance* thus, hate crime laws are really about vengeance* In this case it criminalizes free speech* No question was vandalism, property crime.* Prosecuting words or symbols used is an erosion of first amendment* In 1978, the ACLU took a controversial stand for free speech by defending a neo-Nazi group that wanted to march through the Chicago suburb of Skokie Illinois, where many Holocaust survivors lived.

After discussing the Poway Hate Crime, I also discuss attending a beautiful Quinceanera, Rancho Bernardo Business Hero Nick Anastasopolous, Trump's foolish #Tariffman tweet, PUSD finances once again negatively in the news, reflections on the presidency of George Herbert Walker Bush, Local High School Sports Update, City of San Diego Basketball Championship SDSU vs USD, my new binge watch guilty pleasure The Man in the High Castle, and my Ozzy Osbourne story JRP0023
