  • Homelessness, Michael Gaulden, JRP0042
We explore the topic of homelessness
with Michael Gaulden.  Michael is an
author, entrepreneur, community activist and advocate for the homeless.  His story is remarkable.
Michael and his mother grew up
homeless from the ages of 7 through 17.  They
lived in cars, parks, shelters, stairwells and bus stations.  With no money, no home and no refrigerator, he
experienced severe hunger that felt like his own body was digesting itself. He
and his mother relied on food from shelters, but often those resources were empty,
and he was forced to beg or worse simply to survive.
Michael tells the story of how he
discovered education as his way out of the homeless trap.  Despite making tremendous strides in
learning, doing his homework under a street light, being told by adults he was
doomed to fail and getting constantly teased and harassed by other children, Michael
persevered and succeeded.  He was awarded
a full ride scholarship to UCLA and graduated with a double major in Political
    Science and African American Studies.
Michael now focuses his life as an
advocate for the homeless.  As CEO of
Creating First Impressions, he and his team provide resources and skills
training to help struggling people find their way out of homelessness.
    We explore his incredible story
including working as a high school student to earn enough to finally secure a
stable home for his family.  We learn how
city leaders push the homeless out of communities and often out of town
completely. We learn how in order to climb out of homelessness, the individual
needs to believe in themselves first and want to make their life meaningful.
    With homelessness getting more
attention in the local and national media, it is intriguing to hear a story of
a person that experienced the struggle first hand.  The homeless are not nameless and
faceless.  They are real people with real
stories and often with great value to offer others.
What can we do to help?  Let’s focus in our own community.  Often it just takes a friendly conversation
to start the process.  Reach out.  Simple gestures and offerings go a long way
to helping those in need get on their feet.
The end result is a Win-Win outcome where the person in need is lifted
up and the community overall is improved.

  • Eureka Moments Pete Neild JRP0041
Pete Neild joined us to discuss those life changing inflection points we call Eureka Moments.  Part of life can be carefully planned, but sometimes a specific instant or a seemingly tiny decision can have profound effects on your life.  That one event, that one relationship, that one job choice leads you to a world of new opportunities and possibilities.
We can look at time in a linear
fashion tracing our own history to where we are today.  But really the timeline is anything but linear.  It is a series of decisions, or junctions,
where we turn left, veer right, plow ahead or take a few steps back.  One’s life and all potential timelines can
look like a tree starting from birth at ground level to the myriad of life
paths represented by the branches, twigs as the tree travels skyward.  We can look down the tree and see where those
branches “branch off” and identify those Eureka Moments that changed our path
    forever.
Pete Neild shares a number of
stories recalling his own Eureka Moments as a navyman on submarines many
decades ago.  His stories cover his career
path in the service and his relationships with his mother, wife, children and grandchildren.

  • Padres Opening Day JRP0040
    It’s Major League Baseball Opening
Day.  It’s the San Diego Padres Opening
Day.  Hope Springs Eternal.  Today should be a National Holiday.  I am fired up; can you feel it?
In this podcast I share my thoughts at
the conclusion of Spring Training as we get ready for Padres Opening Day.  We run through the roster, the highlights and
    the expectations.
Manny Machado is welcomed to San
Diego.  Fernando Tatis Jr makes his MLB
debut.  These two players bring so much
excitement, so much hope and a huge boost of energy and swagger to help shape a
    new Padres identity.
We get into the crowded 6-man outfield.  I share my love affair with Wil Myers and the world of potential he has…  plus, his new self-confidence now that he is married and has a new hairstyle thanks to the miracle of modern medicine.  We talk about Franmil Reyes’ giant personality and his Instagram feed.  We get into the catching situation discussing Austin Hedges’ rapport with the pitching staff and the lighting fast bat of Francisco Mejia that reminds me of Gary Sheffield.
And we say good bye to Brian Mitchell
and Jose Pirela, although Jose is certainly going to be back at some point in
2019.  It’s amazing that the Padres are
no longer having to settle for mediocre players that otherwise wouldn’t make another
MLB roster.  The team now is loaded with
    talent.
I also share some personal thoughts
on a number of Poway High School players starting their professional season
with a special highlight on Connor Joe who is making his MLB debut today at
Petco Park for the San Francisco Giants.
We offer shout outs to Poway High alumni Alex Dickerson, Austin Wynns,
Kevin Newman, Tyler Nevin, Tony Gwynn Jr and Thomas Neal.  I can’t believe I didn’t mention future Hall
of Famer and long time Poway resident Bruce Bochy in this podcast episode.
Enjoy Padres Opening Day. I hope you have a great season in your personal life and your professional life.  Go Padres!

  • Obamacare Repeal?, JRP0039
Repealing Obamacare?  Yes, just days after the Mueller Report was submitted to the Attorney General, the Trump Administration puts their foot on the gas and backs a Texas judge’s ruling to undo Obamacare.  Is this a desire to help our healthcare system or just another Trump political ploy to create chaos and divide the nation?
I am no fan of Obamacare.  It is a corporatist plan that forces people to buy their products or face penalties from the government.  That, on its face, is reason to oppose the plan.  But it goes further.  Obamacare also guarantees profit margins for insurance companies and provides them with a free e-commerce system.  It’s loaded with goodies from these corporations all built into the system with government regulations. It's hard to believe that my progressive friends support such a plan.
The Affordable Care Act has also made healthcare less affordable.  Pricing has gone up for the vast majority of Americans, yet ACA supporters celebrate because prices are simply going up more slowly.  What?  What about lowering prices?
In this podcast I offer up a long list of innovative ideas to make healthcare less expensive.  We look at ways to unwind the government impact in the market that drive prices up.  We break down the regulations that rig the market for Big Pharma.  We look for ways to empower healthcare consumers and offer more access at lower prices.
I also take a look at the 2020 Presidential race and offer up a series of comments on many of the candidates in the Democratic and Republican fields.  We get into a number of topics including the Electoral College, Instant Run Off Voting (aka Ranked Choice Voting), Scandinavia as the model for Democratic Socialism, Medicare for All, identity politics, school vouchers, breaking up Amazon and Facebook.  We take a look at candidates Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, Bill Weld, Beto O’Rourke and of course Donald Trump.

  • Believe in Yourself JRP0038
I was inspired by a quote from Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise. That's Star Trek for those of you that aren't hip to the jive. The quote is: "You either believe in yourself, or you don't."
This podcast is all about Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. What could be more core to living a flourishing life and discovering happiness than believing in yourself?
We have been told many times as a child or young adult to "Believe in Yourself". But what does it really mean? In this episode we explore the idea in depth.
It’s easy to find yourself in periods of self-doubt where you are your own biggest critic.  Where you are tearing yourself down.  Where you are absolutely not believing in yourself.  At the same time, on the opposite end of the spectrum is where one may be living a false reality bragging to the outside world that they are better than they actually are.  We discuss finding that sweet spot where you are comfortable in your own skin, where you understand your skills and experience, and where you are ultimately living in reality.
We also break down the idea of self-esteem.  Self-esteem is ultimately about having self confidence and a critical element to achieving happiness.  It means you know you are good and you have the ability to achieve your goals.  You know it because you have done it.  Self-esteem is not something someone can offer you, but instead something you have to discover yourself.  We explore how your career is a key opportunity in your life to build self-esteem.
We cover these ideas using numerous examples including San Diego State Aztecs Head Basketball Coaches Steve Fisher and Brian Dutcher, San Diego Padres rookie pitcher Chris Paddack, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Scott Kaplan, Vincent Van Gogh and the 2010 Poway National Minor A Champion Phillies.

  • Chargers Ex-Girlfriend, JRP0037
I was considering a number of topics for today’s podcast, but when I read Nick Canepa’s article today longing for his ex-girlfriend, the San Diego Chargers, I knew I’d have plenty to say.
You can check out Nick’s article at this
    link: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/columnists/nick-canepa/sd-sp-canepa-machado-padres-chargers-20190305-story.html
The Padres signing of Manny Machado
is a great moment for San Diego, but even when we get some good news, Nick
needs to keep bringing up his old ex.  She’s the one that got away.  How could we let her leave like that?
I break down the problems with the
Chargers during their final 20 years in San Diego.  We get into their demands for corporate
welfare from taxpayers, the infamous ticket guarantee funded by taxpayers and
California’s trend of privately financed stadiums.  We’re not only seeing this type of cronyism
with professional sports teams in America, but with major corporations like the
recent HQ2 initiative launched by Amazon.
I also get into my declining interest in the NFL largely due to CTE concerns, feeling leveraged by owners and the NFL commissioner, off-the-field behavior by some athletes involving murder and assault, the culture of the league, the declining performance of the Chargers and even the nationalist propaganda offered up by the NFL.  We also offer up plenty of commentary on Dean Spanos, Ron Fowler, Peter Seidler and even get in some mentions of OJ Simpson, Jim Plunkett, Billy Ray Smith, Junior Seau, Aaron Hernandez, Rick Barry, Clifford Ray and Keith Wilkes.  Yes, this is my first podcast mentioning OJ Simpson.  I have hit the big time!
But in the end, Nick needs to get
over it.  Let’s focus on the reality of
San Diego sports today rather than pining for your old flame or dreaming about
another girl that doesn’t yet exist.

  • Journaling JRP0036
    Today we explore improving your
life, gaining clarity, and achieving focus and purpose all through the practice
of journaling. This is all part of my own adventures in my life, my liberty and
    my pursuit of happiness.
During this podcast I share numerous
stories about challenges I faced as an entrepreneur during the Great Recession.
My clients were dramatically scaling back work with me, some clients went out
of business, other clients would not pay their open invoices. I felt
overwhelmed with a storm of thoughts, feelings, ideas, fears and worries as I
tried to navigate the economic storm.
But how did I emerge from the chaos
of plugging holes and putting out fires? How do I get from a reactive mindset
to a proactive one? How do I turn down the volume of the noise in my head and
get my thoughts organized? How do I coach myself to success? How do I reorient my
ship and point it in the right direction?
It all came down to doing deep exploration
of my thoughts and feelings.  I had to
organize everything in my mind in an objective, rational way.  Journaling was the key to my success.
This process helped me relieve myself
of a number of heavy burdens.  Journaling
was like talking to a good friend that would just listen and not judge.  The release of writing down everything in my
mind was powerful in and of itself.
But then when I was able to drill
down deeper and explore my thoughts and feelings, I began to learn new things
about myself.  I would discover that challenges
were not nearly as bad as I thought.  I
found organizing my thoughts clearly and then “uploading them back into my mind”
gave me clarity, focus and purpose.
    Distractions would melt away.
I hope this podcast episode is of value to you.  I invite your comments.

  • Manny Machado, Bruce Bochy JRP0035

In one of the biggest news stories in San Diego sports history, the San Diego Padres have signed Manny Machado to a 10-year, $300 million contract.  We break down this deal from all angles.  What this means to the Greater San Diego sports community, how this sorts out financially for the San Diego Padres and what the lineup looks like for the 2019 season.  We also look at the reactions from both Padres fans and the national media as the try to come to grips with the Padres aggressiveness, particularly in light of the team’s history as a perennial doormat in the NL West.  I also wonder about our friends in #PadresTwitter and all of the crazy promises they admitted publicly they would do if the Fowler/Seidler ownership group signed Manny Machado or Bryce Harper.

We also discuss former Poway resident Bruce Bochy and his
decision to retire at the end of the 2019 baseball season.  Bochy has been an MLB manager for over 25
consecutive years leading the San Francisco Giants to 3 World Series
Championships plus an NL Pennant and 2 NL West Division Titles for the San
Diego Padres.  Bochy is a stone cold lock
for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

    Can you believe it?
The Padres signed Manny Machado!  That’s
two years in a row they have signed the top free agent in the market.  Little, spunky San Diego nestled way down in
the bottom left corner of the United States of America has signed Manny Machado
to the largest free agent sports contract in the history of humankind.  What the hell is goin’ on around here?

  • Poway Granny Flats, JRP0033

In this episode we get into two hot issues: Poway Mayor Steve Vaus’ proposal for government subsidized Poway granny flats and NYC Congressperson Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ proposal for the Green New Deal.

At the local level, we break down Vaus’ HOMES (Homes On My
Extra Space) plan in Poway.  There is
good buzz going on in California, in San Diego and here in Poway about
addressing the housing crisis.  San Diego
Mayor Kevin Faulconer has proposed plans to make construction easier and to
combat NIMBYism that thwarts new housing growth.  Faulconer’s proposal is a good one, but Vaus
wants Poway to go “One Step Further”.
Vaus’ plan has the city buying the granny flat building, placing it on
the land of a Poway property owner, then splitting the revenue between the
city, the property owner and a property manager to manage the process.  Some think it is a good plan to encourage
more granny flats and provide affordable housing for low income tenants.  But is it a moral plan?  Other property owners, that may be denied a
granny flat or simply do not have room for one, end up paying property taxes so
a different property owner is rewarded.
How are they rewarded?  They get a
revenue stream, they get an upgrade to the property that makes their home more
valuable and they get the granny flat building as a gift after 10-12
years.  The right answer is to remove
govt control, not more central planning.
I break it down in this podcast.

We also get into Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ Green New Deal,
her political strategy and the moral cause she is championing.  But is there an opposition that is engaging
in the battle of ideas from a moral perspective?  I am not seeing it, but I try to make the
    case.
