In this episode we discuss issues of Property Rights and

Equality Under the Law within the context of recent policy proposals from the

Poway City Council.

In the aftermath of the

Poway Chabad Shooting, Mayor Steve Vaus has proposed a revision to the city

code to give Places of Worship a waiver so they do not have to come before the

City Council to ask for a variance to build a wall or a fence above the 6 ft

limit.  This ultimately will give people

greater security so they can pray without fear.

But is this a case of expanding property rights for some and not for

others?  Should all property owners be

treated equally under the law?  How is

this consistent with Mayor Vaus’ desire to “Get Government Out of the Way”?

In the other issue we

revisit the topic of Granny Flats in Poway to partly help relieve pressure in

our current housing crisis.  We learn the

city is still exploring the idea, but they are considering proposals that set

up a business partnership between the city and the property owner including the

city extending loans to property owners and participating in a revenue share

agreement on rental income.  How is this

consistent with Mayor Vaus’ desire to “Get Government Out of the Way”?  Are there better ways to embrace the idea of

Granny Flats while respecting property rights and individual liberty?

We also discuss various other issues and people including

the Burlingame Little League, Poway National Little League, Jon Canavan,

Ancestry.com, University of New Mexico, California Missions, Electric Vehicles,

Charging Stations, Hyundai, San Jose, El Super Burrito, Millbrae, San Rafael,

Ross, San Buenaventura Mission, Mission San Rafael Arcangel.

In this episode we cover The Declaration of Independence,

Justin Amash’s own declaration of independence from the Republican Party and

News & Notes in DC and here in Poway.

We start off with Congressman Justin Amash (I-MI) and his

statement of leaving the GOP.  Or, did

the GOP actually leave Amash?  We get

into Amash’s record as a bold, principled and transparent congressman and a

staunch defender of the Constitution and individual rights.  We explore Amash’s criticism of the GOP and

the Rep/Dem duopoly.  We discuss Amash’s

brand as a fiscally conservative, free

market, small government, Bill of Rights, non-interventionist, economic

freedom, individual liberty representative and how the GOP has largely

abandoned those values.

Then we take a close look of the Declaration of

Independence and it’s moral and historical significance.  We pay close attention to the Preamble of the

Declaration of Independence, particularly our inalienable or unalienable rights

of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness and why this serves as a higher

purpose for this podcast.

We also discuss various other issues and people including

the Age of Enlightenment, John Locke, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., slavery,

women’s suffrage, civil rights, Donald Trump, Lee Iacocca, Ford, Chrysler,

Fortran 77, Poway Unified School District, Frederica Wilson, Free Speech, Trump

Parade, Concentration camps, immigration, reproductive health, rule of law, Diplomat

Barbie, Ivanka Trump and Ron Paul.

We break down the first round of Democratic Debate including the candidates, the issues and the debate format.  Who has the presidential gravitas?  Who is likable?  Who delivered on their brand image?  Who had a necessary grasp of the policies?

I give each candidate a grade based on how well they performed on stage in the Democratic Debate.  My grades address their energy, likability and command on stage.  I didn’t grade them as I like them.  If I did, they would all be begging me to grade them on a curve!

I also share my own opinions on the candidates and the

issues.  I express my concern of their

heavy-handed policies, many of which actually damage their own stated higher

purpose of democracy.  I also reflect on

many of their policies in the context of our inalienable right of life, liberty

and the pursuit of happiness.

We cover a wide range of issues in the Democratic Debate including long form discussions, arbitrary state power, constitutional governance, foreign policy, education, immigration, reproductive rights, prescription drug pricing, Big Lebowski, shrinking middle class, Afghanistan War, breaking up corporations, social democracy, The View, climate change, Amazon, corporate taxes, working class, hot mics, college affordability, college debt, free markets, tariffs, tax policy, Christianity, racial equality, democratic socialism, medicare, healthcare, inalienable rights, stagnant wages, Wall St, gun control, public option, Barack Obama, moderates, candidate appearance, politician uniforms, Kaiser Permanente, MSNBC, Ronald Reagan, Walter Mondale, #YangGang, #DemDebate, #DemDebates, #2020election, #ShePersisted, #beto, #MayorPete, #BlueWave, #Bernie, #FeeltheBern, #Booker, #UncleJoe, #biden, #elizabethwarren, #Kamala .

We discuss each candidate including Julian Castro, Amy

Butigieg, Bernie Sanders, Kirstin Gillibrand, Eric Swalwell, Michael Bennet,

Marianne Williamson, Joe Biden, John Hickenlooper, Andrew Yang, John Delaney,

Jessica

Johnson joined us to talk about her new book, Abandoned San Diego, that documents

hidden treasures found in secret locations around San Diego that walk us

through history, culture and nature.

It was wonderful to discuss so many of the special locations and landmarks in Jessica’s book and her website: www.hiddensandiego.net.  We talked about gold mines, haunted houses, secret caves, hidden waterfalls, partially built castles, graveyards, 19th century homes and so much more.

But for me the greatest part of the conversation was Jessica’s higher purpose of helping adults rediscover their inner child as they relearn the ideas of exploration and play.  It’s this sense of adventure that can help bring people from an overly structured, corporate life or from a dark, depressed place to find those special moments of freedom, enlightenment and joy.

We covered many other topics and people including the Whaley House, Sunset Cliffs, Spalding Park, Lake Wohlford, Poway Historical Society, Mary Shepardson, Big Stone Lodge, Old Pomerado Road,  Poway Stage Coach Stop, supernatural experiences, California Missions, Pala Mission, Castle Rock, Escondido, San Diego Historical Society, Old Town, ghost hunters, Jay Leno, empty nesters, happiness, doing what you love, teaching, art and Kate Sessions.

Jessica Johnson won the prestigious Town Crier Award from the San Diego SOHO (Save Our Heritage Organization) for raising historic preservation awareness with her Abandoned San Diego book, Hidden San Diego website, and popular social media pages, which aim to interest young and active generations in exploring local historic sites and preserving them.

Before we get into the topic of entrepreneurism, we start off our podcast talking about Poway News including Anna Vaus making her debut at the Grand Ole Opry, the City of Poway’s tight budget, Poway Unified School District’s continued financial irresponsibility and unwillingness to heed good advice.  We explore the Democratic Presidential race and the upcoming debates.  We talk about the recent Padres surge.  We tip a hat to two Pirates: Poway High grad Kevin Newman, and Grossmont High grad Joe Musgrove, and his Poway pitching coach Dominick Johnson.  I share my thoughts on the NBA Draft and talk about my new streaming interest Deadwood.

Then we

get into the idea of entrepreneurism as an option for young people.  It doesn’t always need to be about finding a

job you hate for a low wage.  It can

instead be about doing work you enjoy, building important career skills, making

more money than you thought was possible and having control over your schedule.

We also talk

about Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Hertz, Poway Road, Prefumo Canyon Rd, Airbnb, paralysis

analysis, overthinking, Poway Performing Arts Center, Bernie Sanders, Joe

Biden, Andrew Yang, #YangGang, Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg, Franmil Reyes,

Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Eric Lauer, Logan Allen, Eric Hosmer, Kirby

job, occupational licensing, Connor Boyack, P. Diddy, L. Tom Perry, Libertas

Imagine if everyone got a check each month from the government for $1,000.  We break down the topic of Universal Basic Income (UBI).  We look at the history, the morality, the rationale, the assumptions, the funding sources, the politics and the objectives of the initiative.  How does Universal Basic Income play a role in the discussions of minimum wage, living wage, poverty and incentives to work?

Of

course, we can’t discuss Universal Basic Income without discussing the candidacy

of Andrew Yang.  UBI is his signature issue

and he justifies it based on the evolution of artificial intelligence, automation

and robotics on the economy.  But where

does this money come from?  Are Yang’s

assumptions legitimate?  Could his policy

have good intentions but ultimately be immoral?

We get

into a few more topics including family history research.  I also discuss one of my personal objectives to

#BeBraver and what that means to me and this podcast.

We also share thoughts on the Golden State Warriors, Toronto Raptors, Kawhi Leonard, Steph Curry, altar boys, Rick Barry, Clifford Ray, Nate Thurmond, ancestry.com, San Francisco, Castro St, Eureka Valley, Noe Valley, Burlingame, San Mateo, Redwood City,  Rory Herrman, community forum, Poway, Life, Liberty, Pursuit of Happiness, Pete Neild, Luddites, looms, truckers, sensors, self-driving cars, Milton Friedman, negative income tax, value added tax, tax the rich, Freedom Dividend, cost of living, Lyft, Uber, Robot Zombie Apocalypse, Internet of Things (IOT), wearable technology, biotech, tourism, wind energy, solar energy, education technology, mobile apps, EVs, electric vehicles, battery technology, Firing Line, William F. Rory

Herrman joined us to talk about his hockey story coming up through the ranks in

youth hockey, competing in the highest-level amateur hockey league in the

United States and preparing for NCAA Division 1 Hockey.

Rory Herrman got the bug to play hockey from experiencing the amazing energy and excitement attending San Diego Gulls games with this family at the San Diego Sports Arena.  We trace his story from roller hockey at the Poway Sportsplex and Kit Carson Park in Escondido all the way to playing for the USA U17 National Team and the Green Bay Gamblers and Fargo Force in the USHL.

Tracing

Rory’s life through his ascendency in the hockey ranks was incredible. The

support and love from his parents made everything possible.  The flexibility and academic support from his

principle and teachers at Poway High School let him pursue his dream while

staying on track achieving great grades and remaining on course for college. From

8th grade to senior year in high school it was a different school

with different classmates and different experiences.

Rory's stories about the competitiveness on the ice, the hockey fights and the personal impact of being trade were riveting.

Rory Herrman and I touch on a range of other topics including the Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Wayne Gretzky, ice fishing, deer hunting, getting traded, United States Hockey League, Ron Garrett, Poway Unified School District, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, RPI, Pomerado Hospital, St. Michael’s School, New Hampton School, Bobby Kaiser, Muskegon Lumberjacks, New Directions, San Diego Ice Arena, SDIA, Junior Gulls, Junior Kings, Junior Ducks, Escondido Ice-plex, Play It Again Sports, Craig Sterling, wiener dog races and more.

Mathew Mitchell joined us for an open conversation on the difficult issues of race, diversity, inclusion and equity.  Mathew brings a unique perspective having grown up in the conservative community of Lompoc CA.  His father is a black man from Memphis TN, his mother an Irish immigrant to America, his sister is married to a woman and Mathew is a happy husband and father in a mixed-race family.  Mathew Mitchell was born to be a culture and engagement champion.

Mathew and I discussed many issues about the Poway community including diversity (or lack thereof), the healing process after the Poway Chabad shooting, Poway schools, Poway High Football, the hate crime in December 2018 when a swastika was painted on a Jewish family’s home and the special opportunity to create an environment of consciousness and inclusion in our city.  (I am hopeful that my podcast can become a community forum where we can discuss these difficult conversations in a civil, respectful manner and learn from one another.)

Mathew B. Mitchell and I spent time discussing Bryan Stevenson and the Lynching Memorial in Georgia. We explored the issue of mixed race in the media and in Mathew’s own life.  We discuss what white really is and was in terms of WASP vs Irish, Italian, Catholics, etc.

We touch
