John Riley Project

Today we will be discussing the Debt Ceiling Circus in Washington DC, a new rule with local govt campaign finance that may play a huge role in future elections, the replacement for Poway Councilmember Barry Leonard, Bally Sports and the Padres, and the future of the Santee Drive In. Plus, we will take your comments and questions in the San Diego Community Forum.

It’s Wednesday May 31, 2023. Here’s what John Riley thinks:

Debt Ceiling Circus: Republicans and Democrats Fiscally Irresponsible

All this drama with threats of blowing up the economy. What does Joe Biden and Kevin McCarthy do? They agree to eliminate the debt ceiling (not raise it, eliminate it) without any serious spending cuts. These two parties are sinking America.

Campaign Finance Reform Will Impact La Mesa, Poway, other San Diego County Cities

A new law from Sacramento demands that politicians recuse themselves from votes if they are voting on a bill that involves a political donor of over $250. How will this be policed? Corporations donate tens of thousands of dollars to politician’s non-profit organizations (see Poway Mayor Steve Vaus and La Mesa Vice Mayor Colin Parent) allegedly to win political favors. Corporate dollars also flow into Political Action Committees to drive campaign ads. Interestingly, government employee unions are given a pass. They can donate as much as they want, and politicians can return the favor with a vote for a raise.

How will Poway replace Barry Leonard?

Poway has a history of filling vacancies on city council with an appointment. Poway folks see this as a violation of democracy. We will find out Poway’s plan at their meeting on June 6.

San Diego Padres no longer on Bally Sports

We discuss the chaos created by the Padres Bally Sports breakup, including reviewing various streaming options.

Santee Drive-In May Shut Down

Many of us have warm feelings for drive-in movie theaters. But the one in Santee may be about to close. The property is in escrow. The plan is to replace the drive-in theater with a huge warehouse. People’s movie content consumption habits have radically changed.

San Diego Community Forum

We discuss homelessness in San Diego, Highway 67, the terrible quality of San Diego roads, a payroll tax to subsidize housing and much more.

We have a laundry list of topics to discuss in this John Riley Project episode. We will discuss the controversial vote in Carlsbad to ban flags, including the Gay Pride Flag. La Mesa tried this as well and got a different result. Carlsbad went a step further and banned prayer too. We'll also discuss San Diego Supervisor Jim Desmond, homelessness, housing subsidies, Rancho Bernardo sink hole, tattoos in Santee and cannabis in Lemon Grove.

It’s Wednesday May 24, 2023. Here’s what John Riley thinks:

The City of Carlsbad is Banning Gay Pride Flag on City Buildings

The LGBTQ community is upset that the Gay Pride Flag cannot be presented on city buildings in Carlsbad. But what is the role of local government? Does the American flag already protect gay rights in the first place? No doubt this flies in the face of the woke agenda, but I think we should support equal rights for all, not special rights for this group and that group.

Carlsbad Bans Prayer at City Meetings

Why do some cities have invocations to start a city meeting? Is this a violation of the separation of church and state? While we’re at it, why do they pledge allegiance to the flag before a meeting? I like this move by Carlsbad.

San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond and Homelessness

The County of San Diego wants to buy more hotels to house the homeless. After all, it’s free money from Sacramento! Is this the solution to homelessness or are they just sweeping them under the rug? There are still mental health and addiction issues that need to be addressed.

Tax the Rich to Subsidize San Diego Housing

The idea is to tax large businesses on their payroll for employees earning $150,000+ per year. The money would go into a fund to subsidize housing for others. Would this solve the housing problem or just make matters worse? Taxing payroll will just increase demand when there is already not enough supply. It’s not a solution.

San Diego Housing Prices Continue to Increase

Despite higher interest rates, housing prices are still going up. It’s because there are not enough houses for sale. Until they start building more, we will continue to have a housing crisis making it really tough for first time home buyers.

Rancho Bernardo Sink Hole

There’s a huge hole on Escala Drive in Rancho Bernardo. Why is it so hard to get this fixed quickly? The City of San Diego is trying to get emergency approval and pass environmental regulations. It’s going to take over 2 months to fix it if we’re lucky.

Santee Allows More Tattoo Parlors

Microblading is a hot trend to enhance eyebrows. The technique is like tattoos, and this is causing Santee to deregulate the rules in their city. Will this attract a bad element? Or is this just people pursuing their happiness?

Lemon Grove Allows More Cannabis Dispensaries

It’s still illegal in El Cajon, but Lemon Grove is opening their economy for more cannabis dispensaries. But Lemon Grove has a serious revenue problem for their city coffers. Is this a move to free up their economy or just generate more tax dollars for the city? Looks like both.

When a corporation donates to a non-profit that is run by a politician, then are they donating to a worthy cause or buying influence? That’s the question facing La Mesa vice mayor Colin Parent in La Mesa. We also discuss the KUSI sale and term limits in Poway.

It’s Wednesday May 10, 2023. Here’s what John Riley thinks:

La Mesa Vice Mayor Colin Parent Facing Conflict of Interest Accusations

Colin Parent runs an organization called Circulate San Diego that works to support sustainable neighborhoods and mass transit. He is actively soliciting contributions from corporate donors. What happens if he must vote on an issue before the La Mesa City Council?  Is it a conflict of interest? Or is it just really bad optics?

KUSI Sold. What is the State of San Diego Media?

Long time independent TV station KUSI was just sold for $35 million to a large media company. KUSI has been a long-time pillar of the San Diego community doing a great job covering local news. How will their station change with new management? We also look at the consolidation of print media and the financial chaos in radio.

Term Limits for Poway?

In a recent Opinion article in the Poway Chieftain, Tony Blain is calling on the City of Poway to enact term limits on the mayor and city council. Most cities in San Diego County already have term limits. Why not Poway?

Poway’s City Council is under fire for the possibility of violating the voter’s will. Now we have a Poway resignation on the city council. The Drama! Escondido has a serious problem with their parks and budget. Imperial Beach wants to change their election rules. Plus, there’s more to the Nathan Fletcher saga. So much happening in San Diego County!

It’s Thursday May 4, 2023. Here’s what John Riley thinks:

Poway Resignation: Councilman Barry Leonard Steps Down

In a surprise, Barry Leonard has decided to step down due to “changes in life”. Leonard had been rumored to be a future mayoral candidate. Interestingly, Leonard covers Poway’s District 2, which is where The Farm – Life Time Fitness controversy is brewing. How should Leonard be replaced? Appointment or election?

Widen Highway 56: Good for commuters, but bad for environment?

City leaders finally broke down and agreed to widen a portion of Highway 56. They are upset that the area was not built with mass transit in mind. Will this solve the congestion or just encourage more car use, and thus more pollution?

Nathan Fletcher Replacement Election Announced

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors announced that Fletcher would not be replaced by an appointment. This will go to an election in August. Right wing activist Carl DeMaio still predicts that Fletcher will recant his resignation.

Amy Reichert Running for Fletcher’s Seat

Can a moderate Republican win a district that is held by a progressive? Reichert will put this tot the test. Reichert wants to address San Diego’s high cost of living, homelessness, and public safety.

Amy Landers is an Escondido Super Hero

The restrooms in Escondido’s parks are disgusting. The city claims they don’t have the funding to solve the problem. Now Amy Landers is doing deep cleans of these bathrooms on her own, and sharing the results on TikTok.

Dane White’s Budget Problem in Escondido

Escondido is mired in deficits and their city services are suffering. They have tried multiple times to increase the sales tax rate, but the voters say no. What can Escondido do to fix their budget? Perhaps they need to ask themselves hard questions about the fundamental role of local government.

Fast Charging an EV in 5 minutes? It’s possible with EV Battery Swapping.

Electric Vehicle technology is moving at the speed of light. Now a new company is partnering with EV manufacturer Fisker to install stations that remove and replace your battery.

Imperial Beach Election Rules

Different cities have different election rules when it comes to fundraising limits and signage. Now Mayor Paloma Aguirre wants to create limits on fundraising and stricter sign rules. Is this a scheme to protect incumbents from the efforts of challengers?

Poway Unified is in the news…. Again! Now a free speech case is coming before the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, politicians are trying to protect renters and protect the homeless, but their policies end up making the housing crisis even worse.

It’s Wednesday, April 26, 2023. Here’s what John Riley thinks:

Poway Unified School District first amendment case before Supreme Court

Poway School Board members Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff and TJ Zane (no longer in office), blocked their constituents from speech on their social media pages. Christopher and Kimberly Garnier have been long time critics of the school districts policies and demanded that the school board hold corrupt superintendent John Collins accountable. Should public officials be able to thwart free speech on their social media accounts, even when they discuss policy issues?

Coronado and Oceanside School Districts sue Facebook, Google, TikTok and Twitter

Of course, social media is impacting children. It has an addictive quality and sadly some kids engage in cyber bullying. Is this the time to sue technology companies? Or is this a teaching opportunity on how to best integrate social media in your life? Focus on reason, rationality, and not living second handed.

San Diego Renter Protections

If a property owner fulfills the terms of the lease agreement, but then decides to have the tenant vacate the property, does that make them a bad person? San Diego officials want to force landlords to pay 2-3 months of rent if they evict a tenant for no-fault. Sometimes landlords want to upgrade the property, move back in, sell the property, or just move on from troublesome tenants. Landlords have property rights, right?

Renters upset about Ratio Billing for Utilities. Pay your fair share!

In older apartment buildings, there are no specific electric, gas, and water meters for each unit. So, property owners use a formula to share those costs amongst the tenants. Now tenants are upset that they are paying more than they should. Isn’t this how socialism and collectivism always seem to work? Some pay more than their fair share. Others freeload off others.

SDG&E Rates Based on Income are Nonsense

In a recent letter to the editor, a Poway resident expressed his frustration with SDG&E’s proposal to base electric rates on income. Is this another income redistribution scheme?

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria has had it with homelessness.

Public officials are facing a moral dilemma. Do they push out the homeless from encampments since they are there illegally and don’t have property rights? Or is doing so inhumane? Seems like Todd Gloria is ready to get more aggressive to push the homeless out.

Should the government buy housing for the homeless?

The San Diego Housing Commission is planning to buy 3 Extended Stay America motels at the price of $383,000 per unit to house the homeless. Promising idea?

San Diego Electric Vehicles Surging

Over 10,000 EVs were sold in San Diego County in the first quarter of 2023. California now has over 1.5 zero emission vehicles. It’s clear what direction this is headed. Get on board or get left out.

LA Times Opinion Article: Give up on EV?

An LA Times editorialist is fed up with the challenges of charging their EV on road trips. But is it really that hard? If you have a home charging station, that should satisfy 90% of your needs.

SDGE wants to base their electricity prices on your personal income. How can they do that? Meanwhile, mass transit in CA is facing a huge fiscal cliff as ridership is way down and COVID relief money is drying up. It’s as if all rationality has left the discussion in the economy. It’s about feelings rather than reason.

It’s Wednesday, April 12, 2023. Here’s what John Riley thinks:

SDGE electricity rates based on your income level.

SDGE plans to create a flat rate based on your income level, but with a lower variable rate based on usage. The plan is to offer income relief for low-income people and save money for big energy users. Wait, what? I thought they wanted us to conserve. I think it’s a scheme to generate more revenue in response to the vast number of customers that are signing up for solar energy.

California Mass Transit – Fiscal Cliff!

Is mass transit the right long-term answer for California? Ridership numbers are down and govt subsidies are drying up. How are they going to pay for this?

Colorado River Water Rationing coming soon.

If the states can’t work out an agreement, then the federal government will step in and decide for them. There’s not enough water coming down the Colorado River to satisfy a growing population. Conservation isn’t the answer. Humans need to manufacture, recycle, capture, and store their drinking water.

La Mesa Vice Mayor Colin Parent running for State Assembly

More fall out from the Nathan Fletcher scandal. Politicians are shifting and capitalizing on opportunities. Now Colin Parent announces a run for State Assembly. Parent is an advocate for mass transit, affordable housing, and safe, walkable neighborhoods.

County of San Diego provides “surplus property” for the Homeless

If you really think about it, homelessness is the result of government policies that limit housing growth, prevent high rises, and prevent evictions. And don’t get me started on PTSD caused by politicians sending American troops into immoral wars. In a refreshing change, here is a short term solution to help get homeless people off the streets and into safe accommodations. These are govt buildings that are no longer used.

UCSD and SDSU Students protest banning homeless encampments.

Mustard Seed Project students are advocating for humane solutions to help the homeless. But are their feel-good ideas preventing us from getting to a solution?

UCSD Chancellor gets $500,000 raise.

Pradeep Khosla was considering a higher paying university job elsewhere, so the UC Board of Regents stepped up to give him a $500,000 raise to keep him. The money is coming from wealthy donors that want to see his leadership continue at UC San Diego.

Looking for a secure job with good pay and benefits? Consider nursing. There is a bidding war for nurses in San Diego as Kaiser Permanente prepares to open a new hospital in San Marcos. Palomar Health is fighting hard to prevent their nurses from jumping ship.

Low Riders Rejoice! Cruising ban lifted in National City

Despite local objections, the San Diego Planning Commission is allowing the Urbn Leaf cannabis dispensary to open in Rancho Bernardo. Is this going to “bring the wrong element” to RB? Or is this a legitimate business that sells medicine that offers people pain relief?

San Diego Pothole Robot Survey

If you see an unusual white van prowling your neighborhood, don’t be alarmed. That might be San Diego’s new high-tech vehicle that measures pothole size, road smoothness, and other variations of crumbling roads. The City hopes to get a treasure trove of data to show them which roads need the most help right now. Do they really need to make it this complex?

The Good: Aztecs in March Madness. The Bad: Nathan Fletcher, homelessness, San Diego schools declining, Poway Unified schools deteriorating, La Mesa dysfunction, Rancho Bernardo residents upset over cannabis. What is going on in San Diego?

It’s Wednesday, April 5, 2023. Here’s what John Riley thinks:

Aztecs make San Diego Proud

So much love for the San Diego State men’s basketball team as they make the March Madness finals, but lose to UConn. Can you feel the energy in San Diego around this team? Feels really good.

Nathan Fletcher Needs to Resign Now

Last week I praised Nathan Fletcher for seeking mental health help. But now the other shoe dropped, and we see a serious sexual harassment mess. Fletcher is a disgrace. But why is he postponing his resignation until May 15th? How will he be replaced on the San Diego Board of Supervisors.

Homelessness Politicized by GOP

CA State Senator Brian Jones understands that homelessness is a key issue for voters. Jones is proposing a plan to clear out homeless encampments near schools, parks and churches. Is this a good plan? Where will these people go?

Poway Unified School District Preparing for a School Bond

In a recent op-ed, PUSD superintendent Marian Kim-Phelps made the case that school facilities are crumbling. They need more funding to upgrade and repair their infrastructure. Phelps is making the case for a future school bond funded by taxpayers. This would be on top of payments for the Billion Dollar Bond. Can PUSD self-finance their plan? I think so.

San Diego Schools, Poway Unified Enrollment Declining

Interesting data as less students are attending San Diego schools. It’s due to a number of factors including a transition to homeschooling and private schools, families moving out of state due to high cost of living, and some upset with the politicization of curriculum. Less students = less funding. What can public schools do to attract more students?

La Mesa Permitting and Signage Dysfunction

The City of La Mesa is struggling to process building permits to allow businesses to start and homeowners to install granny flats. This is frustrating residents and local politicians are demanding change. Meanwhile, La Mesa is considering LED electronic signage, but locals are upset about “visual pollution.”

Can you feel the excitement in San Diego? Everywhere San Diegans are buzzing about the Aztecs in the Final Four and the Padres about to start their 2023 season. Now they are also buzzing about Nathan Fletcher.

It’s Wednesday, March 29, 2023. Here’s what John Riley thinks:

Aztecs/Padres Buzz

Wherever you go there are people wearing Aztec gear and Padres gear. Shirts and hats are flying off the shelves as San Diego gets ready for a big sports weekend. The San Diego State Aztecs made their first Final Four and are only 2 wins away from a national championship. The San Diego Padres made the MLB Final Four last year and hope to win a World Series in 2023. Petco Park and Viejas Arena are special San Diego venues offering great excitement and fun.

Nathan Fletcher Seeks Treatment for Mental Health, Substance Abuse

Huge political news in San Diego as County Board of Supervisors, Nathan Fletcher, steps down from office. Fletcher needs to take time to address PTSD, trauma, and alcoholism which he has struggled with for years. He was considered a lock to win the next election for State Senate and succeed Toni Atkins. We discuss mental health, selfishness (the good kind), and pursuing win-win outcomes.

Homelessness in San Diego is Expanding

New data shows more people are becoming homeless than are finding homes. The housing crisis continues to be a huge problem that is largely caused by local officials. We discuss the data, the demographics, and some of the solutions.

San Diego Community Forum: Poway, Rancho Bernardo, La Jolla

We take your comments and questions in our San Diego Community Forum. We discuss Poway schools, Rancho Bernardo Roads, the proposed Life Time Fitness facility in Poway, the Escondido Mayor, La Jolla’s Black’s Beach, and immigration.

It’s springtime in San Diego! We’re covering the La Jolla quest for independence from San Diego, the controversy in Poway of a fitness center at The Farm, and Todd Gloria declaring Juneteenth a paid holiday for San Diego workers.

It’s Wednesday, March 22, 2023. Here’s what John Riley thinks:

La Jolla Independence

The rich people in La Jolla want to secede! They want to leave San Diego. What could be driving them to do this? Is there plan even achievable? We break it all down including taking a tangent talking about zip codes in San Diego.

Poway Fitness Club Causing Fits at The Farm

The Farm in Poway project is well underway and there are still a vocal minority in town that is angry about it. Now the project spokesperson, Kevin McNamara, wants to change the plan to make the proposed fitness club 10x bigger! Life Time Fitness has a plan that will change the landscape of the commercial and open space plan for The Farm. But wait, didn’t Kevin promise there would be no changes to the plan if the voters approved? The NIMBYs in Poway are now complaining about a violation of democracy and the added traffic and pollution from customers going in and out. The drama!

Todd Gloria declares Juneteenth a Paid Holiday for San Diego City Workers

The more I learn about Juneteenth the more I realize this is America’s Independence Day #2. This is a holiday that should be celebrated in a nation that exalts our inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Good for you Mayor Todd Gloria. Will other San Diego area cities follow suit?

Pete Neild joined me to cover a wide range of topic in this San Diego News Update podcast episode. We cover Poway/Rancho Bernardo issues, San Diego regional news, Joe Biden’s visit to San Diego, and US foreign policy issues with China and Russia.

Poway Cronyism

We saw so much money flowing into Poway’s November election. Turns out that one of the main people behind one of the most influential Political Action Committees ends up getting appointed by Mayor Vaus to a city committee.

Rancho Bernardo Roads

Pete Neild enjoys driving his Corvette Calypso all over San Diego. He can vouch that Ted Williams Parkway and Carmel Mountain Road are a mess. Pete also thinks the Poway roads are not as good as some people think.

Blacks Beach Immigration Tragedy

Pete and John comment on the tragic loss of 8 lives as immigrants attempt to land at Black’s Beach in La Jolla. This invites discussion of immigration and Friendship Park in Imperial Beach.

Silicon Valley Bank’s Mess is impacting people in San Diego

We breakdown the Silicon Valley Bank cluster, wonder how the FDIC is covering it all, and comment how the mess is affecting people in San Diego.

President Biden’s Visit to San Diego

Joe Biden’s recent trip to San Diego was quite the spectacle. Air Force One lands at North Island and then Osprey’s take POTUS to the Del Mar Polo Fields to meet with foreign leaders. The Biden visit closed down airspace for a time and caused the San Diego State Aztecs plane to be late for their March Madness trip to Orlando FL.

Nuclear Submarine Agreement: USA, UK, Australia (AUSUK)

Pete is a submarine veteran so we had some interesting discussion of the nuclear powered submarine deal between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. This led to further discussion of keeping the peace in the South China Sea and the trade routes from East Asia to the Indian Ocean.

Ukraine Russia War

There was plenty to comment about the conflict in Eastern Europe. Pete spent time in the Black Sea area when he served in the military. We also discuss the “don’t get involved” crowd as it relates to this conflict and America’s entry into WW2.
