They are still counting the votes at the San Diego County Registrar of Voters, but the results are becoming very clear in all but a few races. It's time for local election analysis!
We discuss, analyze, and comment on:
The races for Poway Mayor and Poway City Council and what is in store for Poway’s future.
The very tight race still in Poway Unified School District Area C. Will Heather Plotzke win a close one over Patrick Batten?
The need for Ranked Choice Voting and Term Limits.
Poway Unified Superintendent Marion Kim-Phelps likely feeling encouraged about another run for a Poway school bond since school bonds in Lemon Grove and San Diego just passed.
The remarkable legal career of newly elected judge Pete Murray.
A breakdown the San Diego County measures including cannabis taxes, sales taxes, school bonds, trash pickup, building height limits, term limits and much more.
A breakdown the California Propositions including the right to abortion, gambling, arts and music in education, the cost of medical care, and all the rest.

  • Poway, Rancho Bernardo Election Night 2022
It’s Election Night 2022! We focus on the Poway Mayor race, Poway City Council races, and the Poway Unified School District races in this nearly 4 hour long podcast. OMG. The participation from the livestream audience was extraordinary!
We break down the early returns from the San Diego Registrar of Voters. We comment on the individual races and candidates, as well as a little bit of commentary on the national election night stories.  Plus we have all sorts of fun with discussion of electric vehicles, ranked choice voting, the movie Poltergeist, and the good bad and ugly of the year 1972.  Yeah, it was a long one and we got a bit punchy.
This was so much fun!  I hope you can enjoy it with us.
Thanks to the livestream audience for so many great questions and comments. We value your input!

  • Frida Brunzell, Poway Unified School District Candidate
Frida Brunzell is a candidate for Poway Unified School District Board Trustee in Area B. This covers Northeast Rancho Bernardo and North Poway.
Only 75% of PUSD Students Read at Grade Level
Frida shared with me her frustrations with PUSD’s reading curriculum. 25% of PUSD students are not reading at their grade level. According to Frida Brunzell, PUSD is still teaching reading using a flawed method invented in the 1960s. There are innovative and proven alternative methods to teach reading, but establishment interests, book publishers, and fear of change prevent school leaders from making the necessary corrections.
We discussed dyslexia and how this is afflicting students here in our school district. When dyslexic students fail to learn to read, their likelihood of struggling in life or ending up in prison increases dramatically.
Bullying is a Serious School Safety Issue
Frida Brunzell also spoke at length about the problems of bullying on school campuses. Students are now recording the incidents and sharing them on social media. This further terrorizes the victim as they re-experience the trauma and continue to get ridiculed. Sadly, school officials are not taking strong action to combat bullying.
Frida Brunzell is fluent in 4 Languages, has a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering
We also discussed Frida’s backstory growing up in Sweden, attending college in Germany, and living in England and France as a young adult. Frida is fluent in 4 languages and has a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering. Frida has also been very active as a PTA leader at both the school level and the district level.
Students of Color at Poway Unified
Frida also shared her thoughts about racism in Poway schools. As a parent of bi-racial Black students, she shared some of the difficulties her children have experienced. This led to further discussions of the Instagram account Black at PUSD, equity, inclusion, changes in curriculum, and CRT. Frida Brunzell helped start the JEDI group that stands for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
We also discussed PUSD’s COVID policy, failing school infrastructure, the potential of a future school bond, PUSD’s budget, and arts and music education.
Frida wants to be a school board member that asks tough questions and is a voice for constituents in her community.
Thanks to the livestream audience for so many great questions and comments. We value your input!

  • Poway Elections Comments, California/San Diego Propositions
There is one week to go until Election Day and the drama in the Poway elections is heating up! Pete Neild joined me to cover a range of issues and candidates in this Poway Elections Preview episode.
    Poway Elections Drama
We discuss the Holly Oak community’s objection to the new development along Poway Road, as well as the “solidarity press conference” that was organized and then later cancelled. We discuss the proposed housing development, housing density, architecture, street entrances, and an overall frustration with Poway city leaders on communication.
Then Pete and I shared our thoughts on the recent Amit Asaravala podcast. We discussed changing voter registration demographics in Poway as well as the huge influx of outside money into this election cycle. We break down more of the specifics on the money spent by PACs, developers, and locals, including the financial data on the Democratic endorsed candidates. Amit is the President of the Poway Democratic Club.
We share predictions and comments on each race. Do the challengers have enough to knock off an incumbent? Or an incumbent endorsed candidate? Will this election cycle be different?
California and San Diego County Propositions
Then Pete and I break down the California Propositions. So many topics there including abortion, gambling, kidney dialysis, EVs, wildfire protection, tax increases, and cigarettes. Plus, we examine the local San Diego County measures covering topics of cannabis, taxes, school bonds, childcare, trash pickup, building height limitations, and childcare.
Wow, so much in this podcast. Almost 3 hours! We even had an argument amongst members of our livestream audience. Oh, the drama!
Special thanks to our livestream audience for the great comments and questions.
    Thank you!

  • Amit Asaravala, Poway Democratic Club
Amit Asaravala is the President of the Poway Democratic Club. Amit joined me to discuss the tremendous surge of money in Poway politics, the changing voting demographics in Poway, and information on their endorsed candidates.
    Poway Campaign Finance
The financial data was the most eye-opening. Individual people can donate up to $250 for a specific candidate. Amit Asaravala shared that even on the individual level, Poway candidate Brian Pepin has raised approximately $70,000. This is far greater than the typical $10,000 to $15,000 we would see in a typical district election. Over 80% of his donors are from outside of Poway.
Meanwhile, there are political action committees involved in Poway politics attempting to influence the outcome in our local races. These PACs do not have a campaign limit and they receive big dollars from developers, housing contractors, and other individuals. Then the PACs cycle the money to other PACs who end up creating negative campaign ads against candidates that they oppose. Often these ads are heavily distorted and meant to scare the public. Community Voices, the San Diego Police Officers Association, and the Lincoln Club are players in this space.
    Poway Voter Demographics
We also discussed the changing voter registration numbers for Poway. Our “City in the Country” has been a strong “red” city for a long time, but now things are changing. The Democrat voter registration has almost caught up with the Republicans. In fact, more Powegians voted for Biden than Trump in the 2020 election. Could this mean that the Poway Democratic Club’s endorsed candidates might have a serious shot at beating Steve Vaus and the other GOP candidates?
We also discussed Delta Esparza’s candidacy, Hiram Soto’s former employer Alliance San Diego, Kevin Juza’s text messaging campaign, and PUSD candidate Frida Brunzell.
Special thanks to our livestream audience for the great comments and questions.
    Thank you!

  • Poway History and Business with Ed Franklin
If you love Poway history, you will love this podcast episode. Ed Franklin moved to Poway in 1974 as a young child and had so many exceptional stories to tell.
    Poway History
We take a walk down memory lane discussing the different businesses that have come and gone along Poway Road. Did you know the site of the Evans Tire used to be a drive-thru dairy where people could get a gallon of milk, a pack of cigarettes, and a six-pack of beer without getting out of their car? We talked about the history of the Poway Bowl, including its original location in the current U-Haul building.
    Poway Business
Ed is the former President and CEO of the Poway Chamber of Commerce. We discuss the activities of local businesses in the 2017-2020 era, including the chaos caused by the pandemic.
    Poway Politics
We also discuss Poway’s founders, the original layout of streets in Poway, the current chaos of development around town, some of the political candidates running for office in 2022, old stories about Poway leaders, and a projection of what Poway might look like in the future.
    Ed Franklin No Limits Podcast

  • Tony Russo, Poway City Council Candidate
Tony Russo is a candidate for Poway City Council District 3. I live in District 3, so this was a great opportunity to learn more about Tony Russo’s campaign for Poway.
Lack of Trust from Poway Officials
We started by discussing Tony's experience at the Green Valley Civic Association and Poway Chamber’s Candidate Forum. His competitors were stressing safety as their key priority. Tony disagrees. He feels there is a serious lack of common-sense policies, transparency, trust, respect, and honesty from City Council and city officials. Tony Russo expressed how the people of Poway are angry and frustrated.
    Poway Housing Development
We discussed at length the development projects underway in Poway. Tony felt that city officials have not effectively communicated the status of The Outpost project. He was disheartened by the mistakes made by city officials and developers, as well as how those failures were communicated to the people of Poway. Tony did not feel The Outpost was carefully reviewed by city officials and that was led to the water problems that undermined the project. Russo shared his thoughts about how council members would blame the developers rather than looking inwardly on errors made by city officials.
Tony shared his thoughts on The Farm in Poway and the frustration of Stoneridge neighbors as they see new homes being built close to their property. He asked why The Farm is being built so quickly, yet some of the projects on Poway Road are moving much more slowly.
Big Money Invested in Poway Politics
Tony Russo expressed his surprise at the tremendous amount of money being spent to fund one of his competitors and other candidates in Poway. The organization Community Voice appears to be taking donations from developers and other influential people in Poway. Those dollars are provided to the San Diego Police Officer’s Association who use those funds to create attack ads on specific candidates.
    Questions from Poway Voters
We took so many great questions from the audience including conversations about the Martincoit-Stone Canyon intersection, district boundaries, the Poway Senior Center, and if Poway’s slogan “The City in the Country” still matches with today’s reality.
    Tony Russo Supports Small Businesses
Tony was a small business owner and wants to see greater support from the city, or at least a reduction in red tape that slows businesses down. We discussed the plight of a fish market that is struggling to open his business but has been waiting on city inspectors to approve their permits. Tony Russo wants to support small businesses in Poway.
We also discussed the issue of water rates, the Poway boil water ordinance, and the new water infrastructure project.
Tony Russo is a family-oriented person. He talked at length about the joy he gets from supporting his three children, his involvement as a youth sports coach, and special memories of his mother.
Thanks to the livestream audience for so many great questions and comments. We value your input!

  • Yuri Bohlen, Poway Mayoral Candidate
Yuri Bohlen is a candidate for Poway Mayor, and he joined me for a marathon 3-hour podcast covering so many hot topics in the City of Poway. Our livestream audience was also continually active presenting questions and comments for Yuri to respond to. Here are the highlights:
Yuri wants to make “Poway the City in the Country” again. He wants to stop unfair housing mandates from Sacramento and let Poway make decisions for Poway’s own future.
We spoke about many of the development projects going on in Poway including the Outpost, Fairfield, and The Farm in Poway.
Yuri Bohlen shared his plans to improve senior services and the homeless.
Yuri felt passionately about the thrift stores displaced by the Fairfield development project. He wants to work with Poway Councilperson, Caylin Frank, to help these thrift shops find a new home.
Yuri wants to improve communication with the people and get their input on housing development with a Residential District Review committee.
We spoke about the increase of crime in Poway, particularly home thefts and catalytic converter heists. Yuri shared his thoughts on making Poway a safer city.
Yuri Bohlen was a candidate for mayor in 2018 and has done his due diligence in the past 4 years. He is much more informed on the issues, including detailed city council agenda items and the broader topic of property rights.
Even though Yuri is running for mayor, he is often a vocal supporter of current Poway Mayor, Steve Vaus. We explored this apparent dichotomy giving Yuri an opportunity to clarify this issue.
There was all sorts of great questions and comments from the livestream audience, including the “social media drama” that play out in the local Poway Facebook groups.
