continue turning / away from winter / from within the winter cold // hear the birds and see / the steam drift up the / branches of another day

the gulls have gathered / in Lac Sainte-Louis / as if occupying seats // in the auditorium / of early morning / for the sunrise show // they've paid their tickets / and now sit and watch / the sun break the horizon // its reflection resembling / a golden comet / rising from the depths // and who then am i / the unpaid usher / of the solemn occasion // or the human element // mostly unheeded / by both sun and bird // a strange intrusion / at the glazed margin / peninsula of being // observing but still asleep / only opening / one eye a little

Driving down the street as Monday dawned

Behind a truck designed to enjoy life
I squinted as the world before me yawned
And winter kinged me where I felt I'd pawned
My hope of springtime with the queen my wife
Driving down the street as Monday dawned
And Tuesday became Friday getting conned
By Wednesday brandishing a sharpened knife
I squinted at as Thursday before me yawned
And Sunday held onto Saturday like a blonde
Ex-girlfriend who'd caused some mental strife
Driving down the street as Monday dawned
Upon my mind as on a frozen pond
Where I saw fish alive and swimming rife
That squinted as the world before them yawned
And me above them with my magic wand,
Not sitting in my car without belief,
Not driving down the street as Monday dawned,
Not squinting as the world before me yawned.

    past the halfway point
    to nowhere i go
in search of the broken day
    for some reason happiness
    wells up inside the
    cracked bowl of my soul

The shade is pulled above our bed, and through
The silken hanging drapes the sun affixes
Its beam to cast our shadows on the blue,
The pale-blue, green-blue walls where color mixes
With a vibrant painting painted by your mother,
Of pink and white flowers in a vase
That seem to be finale of some other
Suspended history of time and place.
Imagine Wallace Stevens played by Bill
Murray and the emperor like a groundhog
Finding his way over a distant hill
For the first time after that repetitive slog
Of doing time in Plato's illusory cave,
Then waking up free, no longer a slave.

exit to nowhere or the secret lair of the prognosticator who comes out for the sunrise seeing none retreats into his shadow
