THE BRUTALIST is a better film than OVERBOARD, the 1987 comedy starring Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn that also features cabinet construction, and even though it clears that bar, I wanted to find THE BRUTALIST more profound than I did. I left the theater unconvinced that I would discuss the movie 38 years later like I am now with OVERBOARD.

Maybe it's my fault.

During the ensuing days spent composing this piece, I accidentally saw some commentary in other criticism of the film that called out its insistence on being perceived as important. Was THE BRUTALIST trying to get something across that I sensed but didn't have the faculties to succumb to?

Maybe I'm not as sharp as I need to be to get the profundity the film tries to assert. I am okay with that, and none of this is to say I wasn't entertained. Enjoying a day at the movies is what's important.

I also enjoyed the cabinetry.

Hi. It’s Josh.

A few days before the inauguration, I was thinking about how I wanted to deal with the next four years.

I was exhausted from paying attention to the news, but I wasn’t interested in going completely uninformed.

I wanted to use the “opportunity,” as I had decided to optimistically look at this timeline, to become more mindful and better train my mind to take in the “news,” and then let it fall away from my conciousness.

Efficiently and totally.

The other aspect of this thought was to then take the personal time I was reclaiming through this process and apply it to more creative endeavors.

1461 Days of Ignoring The Trump Administration was born. “Day 1” went viral on TikTok, so now I am in until 2029, right?!

Over the initial days of this endeavor, the posts I have been making quickly mutated from improvisational “rants” into shorter “affirmations” about the personal goals I mentioned above.

Hi. It's Josh.

These are my actual behaviors in actual coffee shops.

Everything you are about to hear is meant to make you laugh. While rooted in my reality, my sarcasm isn’t nearly as important to me as empathy. We are all here for a short time, after all.

Lashing out is not a priority. Levity is.

When you listen to this, don’t worry. You’re already perfect. I am describing people we should loathe or at least pity. You may find that I am one of those people.

I am discussing my behavior and how it varies by shop to indicate and illustrate how we can all benefit from being more mindful of altering our behavior based on the situations we are in, the company we are in, and, in the case of coffee shops, the literal “companies” we are in.

How we behave inside different coffee shops is a microcosm of how we can behave outside of different coffee shops.

I find that many of my fellow citizens are becoming less and less self-aware and less and less prone to care how they act in public.

Now that A COMPLETE UNKNOWN, the Timothée Chalamet-starring biopic of Bob Dylan, has been released, it’s the perfect time to revisit my deep-dive from October about my initial impressions of the first official teaser and trailer for the film.

Of course, at 2700+ words, I have much to say about what amounts to a few minutes of movie marketing!

With initial reviews in, I am actually very excited about the critical acclaim that Timmy is receiving for his performance (including the requisite Oscar buzz) because, counter to the initial cynicism from Dylan fans (including myself), I predicted he would nail this portrayal.

Speaking of being a Dylan fan, I also admit to and discuss being what amounts to a mild fan. My “Essential Bob Dylan” playlist is comprised of only 16 songs spanning 17 years! It’s all I need, frankly. Listen here and let me know if you agree.

Later on, I got so inspired from enjoying the Dylan tunes that I cranked out a quick poem of my own titled “The Most Mystical of Manners.” We cover a lot of ground in this episode!
