The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) will meet with utility service providers today over their proposed tariff increments. The Commission will negotiate with the service providers and develop adjustments it finds acceptable in the current scheme of things. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) had proposed that its tariffs be increased by 148% for 2022 and with 7.6% average adjustments between the periods of 2023 to 2026.

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) says it is time to add on to Ghana’s energy capacity to prevent a power crisis (dumsor) in the near future. According to the IES, a careful study of the current generation capacity shows that demand for power will soon overtake supply, creating a shortfall.

Some concern transport unions that are not part of Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have hiked transport fares by 20%, effective from today. They are the Ghana Committed Drivers Association, International Drivers Road Transport Union, Truth Drivers Union, Concern Drivers Association as well as other unions and associations.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced an upward adjustment of transport fares effective May 7, 2022. This is in spite of an earlier announcement by the Union that it hopes to adjust transportation fares upwards by 30% effective Friday, May 13.

The A-G has criticized the Minority for failing to adduce evidence in court over the claim of illegal passage of the E-Levy. Mr. Yeboah Dame noted that the NDC’s claims are mere propaganda that should be ignored. He said the party’s argument in court was embarrassing as their lawyer failed to demonstrate any form of irregularity during the passage of the Levy.

Attorney-General (A-G) Godfred Yeboah Dame says 266 MPs participated in the processes leading up to the approval of the Electronic Transactions Levy (E-levy).

The A-G makes specific reference to the Second Reading of the tax policy, stating that 266 members were present when the question was put on the floor. On the actual approval of the policy, Mr. Dame says voting was by a voice vote and therefore allegations about the number present are immaterial.
