Statement from Premier Pillai on notification of reduction for the Yukon Nominee Program in 2025, released by Yukon on 21 January 2025
| Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Territoriall News Bulletin from the Territory of Yukon. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.
| Premier and Minister of Economic Development Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
"Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has informed the Government of Yukon that the territory will receive a nominee allocation of 215 for 2025. This is a 50 per cent reduction from 2024 levels.
"The Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) was scheduled to reopen for applications from all employers on January 29, 2025, at 9:00 am Yukon Time.
"Following notification of the nominee allocation for this year, which we received on January 15, the Department of Economic Development held an initial meeting with industry organizations to gather their input on how to proceed as quickly as possible.
"In consideration of these discussions with industry organizations, the timing of IRCC's announcement relative to our planned intake and the scale of the reduction, we have made the decision to delay the planned January intake. This is to allow more time to further consider the program's approach to accepting and processing applications in 2025, to ensure this limited allocation is used strategically to address the Yukon's pressing labour market needs.
"We will be considering how to implement a new requirement from IRCC that at least 75 per cent of all nominations are from temporary residents already within Canada.
"This change also means that the program will no longer accept applications from employers in rural communities after January 22 at 4:30 pm Yukon Time.
"We are committed to providing further details at the earliest opportunity, and we will continue to advocate to IRCC to address the needs of Yukoners."

Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Provincial News Bulletin from the province of Ontario. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.
| On January 2, 2025, the Regional Economic Development through Immigration (REDI) pilot launched for a one-year term. The pilot sets aside 200 nominations from the OINP's Employer Job Offer streams for each partner community, addressing specific regional immigration needs
The REDI pilot offers a pathway to permanent residence for skilled foreign workers with a job offer who want to live and work in a participating community including Lanark, Leeds and Grenville, Sarnia-Lambton, and Thunder Bay.
There is no separate application process for the pilot. Applicants with job offers from Ontario employers in one of the designated pilot communities should apply through the standard OINP Expression of Interest (EOI) system, and would be eligible for targeted pilot draws.

Changes to open work permits for family members of temporary residents, Federal news release, released by on 14 January 2025
Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Federal News Bulletin from CIC news release. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.
| Ottawa, January 14, 2025—The Government of Canada is continuing to strengthen the integrity and quality of our temporary resident programs while supporting the country's economic goals and labour market needs.
As part of the broader measures announced in September 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is changing open work permit (OWP) eligibility for family members of international students and foreign workers.
Effective January 21, 2025, only spouses of certain international students and foreign workers will be able to apply for a family OWP.
Family OWPs will be limited to spouses of international students who are enrolled in
master's programs that are 16 months or longer
doctoral programs, or
select professional and eligible programs
Family OWPs will also be limited to spouses of foreign workers who are employed in
TEER 0 or 1 occupations, or
select TEER 2 or 3 occupations in sectors with labour shortages or linked to government priorities
These include occupations in the natural and applied sciences, construction, health care, natural resources, education, sports and military sectors. The full list will be available on January 21, 2025.
In addition, the foreign worker must also have at least 16 months remaining on their work permit at the time when their spouse applies for the OWP. Dependent children of foreign workers will no longer be eligible.
OWPs that were approved under the previous measures and have not expired will remain valid. In situations where students may need more time to complete their program or where family members received a shorter work permit than the principal applicant, in-Canada family members (including spouses and dependent children) can apply to renew their work permit as long as
they are applying under the same criteria as the current work permit, and
the requested duration of the renewal matches that of the existing study or work permit of the principal applicant
Spouses of workers covered by free-trade agreements and those transitioning to permanent residence will not be impacted by these changes. Family members who will no longer qualify for a family OWP can apply for any type of work permit they are eligible for under Canada's work permit programs.

To strengthen the local film and television workforce, the Provincial Government is announcing a new immigration policy for newcomers employed on productions in Newfoundland and Labrador.
This artist-friendly Provincial Nominee Program policy acknowledges the cyclical nature of film and television productions. The policy enables certain newcomers with full-time, cyclical employment to apply for permanent residency. For example, an individual employed on a major television production with a four-month shooting schedule and expected future television production employment projects may now be eligible for permanent residency.
Please contact [email protected] for any additional information
This new immigration policy supports the mandate to encourage newcomers seeking employment in the arts to make Newfoundland and Labrador their permanent home and base for creative production.
