Canada renews commitment to welcome people affected by the conflict in Sudan, released by on 20 February 2025

| News release
February 20, 2025—Ottawa—Canada's approach to immigration supports community needs, economic objectives and humanitarian responsibilities. A key part of these responsibilities is Canada's long-standing commitment to protecting the world's most vulnerable, including people affected by the conflict in Sudan.
After violence erupted in Khartoum on April 15, 2023, Canada took on a leadership role, organizing discussions with like-minded countries to coordinate a response to the crisis. This included work to get hundreds of Canadian citizens and permanent residents and their family members out of Sudan, along with the launch of temporary and permanent immigration measures to help keep people safe and keep families together.
As part of our ongoing work to help people in the region, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today announced that Canada will resettle more refugees affected by the conflict in Sudan over the next two years and increase the spaces available under the family-based permanent residence pathway. These measures will be delivered as part of the existing Immigration Levels Plan and could help more than 7,000 additional people impacted by the conflict in Sudan.
Canada is committing to resettle up to 4,000 Sudanese government-assisted refugees by the end of 2026, and intends to support an additional 700 Sudanese refugees through private sponsorship. This includes up to 350 Sudanese nationals privately sponsored by groups of five and community sponsors for whom Canada also intends to waive the requirement for a refugee status determination document. More details will be available in the coming weeks.
The Minister also announced that the number of applications accepted into processing for the family-based permanent residence pathway will increase from 3,250 to over 5,000, which will allow Canada to welcome approximately 10,000 people under this pathway. The pathway will remain the same as when it launched in February 2024, but will no longer require the Canadian anchor to reside in a province or territory other than Quebec. We will begin accepting new applications under this pathway as of February 25, 2025.

Federal program changes reduce provincial immigration allocation, released by New Brunswick on 05 February 2025
Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Provincial News Bulletin from the province of New Brunswick. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.
| FREDERICTON (GNB) – Program changes made by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada will lead to significant reductions in permanent resident nominations this year.
"The federal government's allocation provided to New Brunswick is a significant step back from previous years," said Jean-Claude D'Amours, acting minister of post-secondary education, training and labour, and minister responsible for immigration. "Unfortunately, this move has forced us to make difficult decisions and we expect it will limit our ability to manage economic growth for our province and its businesses."
New Brunswick is subject to a 50 per cent reduction in permanent resident nominations, which means New Brunswick's allocation will drop to 2,750 this year, from 5,500 in 2024.
The allocation will be split between the Provincial Nominee Program (1,500) and the Atlantic Immigration Program (1,250).
"The changes go far beyond anything we could have anticipated, and the one-size-fits-all measure fails to recognize our province's unique status as the only officially bilingual province," said D'Amours.
The provincial government has presented its concerns to the federal government and conversations are ongoing.
New Brunswick immigration programs will open in the coming days. Applicants are encouraged to monitor program pages for updates and application requirements.
Due to limited space, the government will focus on priority sectors, such as health, education and construction trades, while supporting other sectors with limited allocations. Workers in some occupations will be restricted from participating.
"We empathize with New Brunswick businesses who may no longer be able to benefit from these programs, and we encourage them to reach out to WorkingNB to help fill job vacancies," said D'Amours.
WorkingNB workforce consultants are available to help employers of all sizes meet their human resources needs.

New rules to strengthen temporary resident document cancellations, and border security and integrity, released by on 12 February 2025
Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Federal News Bulletin from CIC news release. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.
| Ottawa, February 12, 2025—Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated Canada's Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations to strengthen authorities to cancel temporary resident documents.
These changes give immigration and border services officers explicit authority to cancel electronic travel authorizations (eTAs) and temporary resident visas (TRVs) on a case-by-case basis, including when
a change in a person's status or circumstances makes them inadmissible or no longer eligible to hold the document (for example, the person provided false information, has a criminal history or is deceased)
an officer is not satisfied that someone will leave Canada by the end of their authorized period of stay
the document is lost, stolen, destroyed or abandoned
The changes also enable officers to cancel TRVs, eTAs, work permits and study permits issued to people when
they become a permanent resident
they are deceased, or
the document was issued based on an administrative error
The amended regulations came into force on January 31, 2025, and are published in the Canada Gazette II. These changes enhance the integrity of Canada's temporary residence programs and are expected to strengthen security at the border and within Canada.
IRCC will continue to improve processes and invest in tools to secure our borders and protect Canada's immigration system.
