SAINT JOHN (GNB) – The former Crescent Valley School property has been selected as the site of a new kindergarten-to-Grade 5 school in Saint John’s north end.

“School facilities are hives of activity for students during the day and the community at large after hours,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Bill Hogan. “A new school for north-end Saint John will inspire student learning and help us with our goal of building a better education system for New Brunswick.”

The new school will replace Hazen White-St. Francis School and Centennial School, which are both more than 55 years old.

New Habitat for Humanity home in Moncton being built with government support

FREDERICTON (GNB) – A Habitat for Humanity home under construction in Moncton is the result of new partnership with the provincial government.

Under the Housing for All strategy, the government is providing the organization with $70,000 per unit for up to 10 new homes per year. To date, there are plans to move six families into homes in the coming months in Moncton, Fredericton, Saint John and Miramichi.

Province partners with United Way to provide emergency kits

Through the Provincial Major Incident Readiness Team (MIRT), Government has partnered with United Way of PEI to prepare and distribute kits that can assist in preparing Islanders in need for the next emergency.

Through an investment of over $200,000, the Province has worked with United Way of PEI to supply community groups with emergency preparedness kits which are an integral piece of ensuring that residents are prepared in the event of an emergency. The United Way of PEI assembled and shared these kits with partner organizations, non-profits, and other community groups so that they can be distributed to Islanders in need.

Emergency Preparedness Kit supplies can include:

Water;
Non-perishable food items;
Flashlight(s);
First aid supplies;
Emergency hand-crank radio
Emergency Blanket; and
Batteries

Ray Donn Toews Building Materials Ltd. pleaded guilty in Moose Jaw Provincial Court to one violation of The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020.

The company was fined for contravening clause 3-1(b) of the regulations (being an employer, fail to comply with the duties of an employer at a place of employment including arrangements for the use, handling, storage and transport of articles and substances in a manner that protects the health and safety of workers, resulting in the serious injury of a worker). As a result, the court imposed a fine of $40,000 with a surcharge of $16,000, for a total amount of $56,000.

Mount Saint Joseph Nursing Home in Miramichi is preparing to add 30 nursing home beds to the province’s long-term care system.

“Nursing homes, and the care received there, are important pieces of the provincial long-term care sector,” said Réjean Savoie, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “A traditional build can take approximately three years. While we work to develop infrastructure for the future, we are grateful for opportunities like this one to act more quickly.”

Savoie spoke on behalf of Kathy Bockus, minister responsible for seniors.

Fall workshops for seniors on financial information, seniors benefits

Workshops focused on important financial information for seniors are being offered across the Island this fall.

These free workshops will inform seniors about scam and fraud prevention, provincial and federal benefits that PEI seniors may be eligible for, and additional supports available to seniors in the province.

“We want Island seniors to be informed and empowered so they can continue to thrive at home and in their communities. We feel this is an important service to offer, especially with scams and fraud on the rise, often targeting seniors.”
