To deliver… start by KNOWING your target audience (we’ve covered this before - “creating a Client Profile”)
1. Discover Examining.
- Pay attention. Focus. Watch. Hear. Note. Truly observe your target audience.
- Listen with your eyes. WHAT? Pay attention with such intention that you can “see what they are saying”… Listen with the intent to understand.
- The GOAL is to discover what your target audience values and cares about.
- Look with your ears. WHAT? With so high a regard for details - listen in for what is SAID or IMPLIED more than the actual words used.
2. Diagnose Extremes.
- Extend beyond your assumptions.
- Expand your thinking.
- Don’t fixate on the way YOU might do something, or how you might ASSUME everyone else might do, use or experience something. Set the assumptions aside and observe. Look with intent to find those who are totally unexpected. Recognize and acknowledge the extreme takes that are outliers to YOUR expected norm.
- The GOAL is to discover new IDEAS!
3. Directly Engage.
- Interview your target audience to better know and understand them.
- Learn to ask questions well. You are looking for MORE than a check the box answer (yes and no are NOT answers that provide insight.)
- Right questions should reveal new insights.
4. Develop Empathy
- Figuratively, put on the Target Client’s shoes. Walk in their experience. See your product or solution through their lens.
- Acknowledge HOW they see things differently. Note it - put it to paper and define the perspective in a palatable way.
5. Describe Experience
- Document the details of what you have discovered.
- Stop. Learn. Know Better. Do Better.
- Insight is only valuable if it is practically applied.

Stop. Practice the pause. Set an alarm every day to remind you to STOP and Pay Attention to what you are doing. In the Pause, ask yourself am I doing the same thing on autopilot or am I choosing to do something better - because I KNOW something better?
