It is no secret that our world seems to hit us with tragedy at every turn. Like an unstoppable freight train careening uninvited into our lives.
Since the topic is unavoidable, the question becomes, as a marketer, how do you go about responding to tragedies? Or do you?
There are typically two ways to react when a national tragedy occurs:
You either,
1. Halt marketing efforts altogether, which allows people time to process the event and do what you can to mitigate the perception of being insensitive by continuing business as usual. (However, stopping all marketing activity could interrupt ongoing launches, contracts with other stakeholders, or put at risk the ad optimization that you’ve spent major moola on. And if you do pause your marketing efforts, the question then becomes, how soon is too soon to return to “normal” activity.)
Or,
2. Continue marketing as usual. Some people find comfort in normalcy, providing a blanket of reprieve from the horror outside and pointing out there is always a rainbow after a storm. (On the flip side, continuing marketing as usual and not acknowledging the tragedy at all could come off as insensitive and give off the impression that you value earnings over humanity.)
A cookie-cutter response does not exist when it comes to deciding the best way to respond when a national tragedy presents itself.
It is the goal of this episode to give you a few options and perspectives, including my own, to help guide you in creating a plan to respond that validates who you are, and best fits your business.

So many people say they hate marketing, but they don’t. Not really. They think they do and the reason is simple; a lot of marketing that they have seen is full of psychological manipulation and gross sales tactics.
Sure, the old way of marketing may work, don’t get me wrong. But it’s far from perfect, and we should be intentional about the strategies we're implementing so that we can show respect to our audience and make money in a way that's both aligned with our values and more profitable ... tune in to learn more!

Diversity brings strength. Diverse voices create growth. Diversity drives success.
And at the same time, it's important to remember that not everyone’s experience is the same. We must recognize that communities are not monolithic.
In our attempts to raise the voices of diversity, we must be careful not to amplify the voices who will negatively impact our purpose. We must be careful this isn’t done unintentionally... tune in to dive deeper!

Your choice of words has the power to exclude, welcome, offend, or lift up. The way you speak to people can be the most impactful of all. You have the choice to disrupt or support systems of oppression with your marketing language.
As someone running a business as a force for good, your marketing language is an essential consideration. Over the last 15 years, 92% of population growth in the United States came from communities of color. These underrepresented groups are looking to see themselves and their worldviews in your branding.
With this rapidly growing population, we’re seeing three out of four Gen Z consumers say they are willing to boycott businesses that discriminate against marginalized populations. It’s more important than ever to use inclusive language ... tune in to learn more!

When it comes to creating online content, the need to be creative and stand out is pretty obvious.
I mean, if you’re putting all the effort into creating content, of course, you want it to stand out enough that people will actually consume it. And it can be tempting to hop on the bandwagon of every new trend online as they’re picking up steam with the hopes and dreams of more followers and likes looming in front of you.
However, as a Just Marketer who actively seeks to be as accessible and inclusive as possible, we play by some different rules than many content creators online.
Sometimes we have to pass on the trends... tune in to learn more!

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in 1990 to ensure Americans with disabilities have accommodations in physical spaces. However, how it translates into the online space is still a bit up in the air. After all, in 1990 we never could have imagined how technology would change over the next 20+ years.
While there is no formal law mandating websites be made accessible, nor what that should look like, as Just Marketers, we understand that ensuring our content is accessible is simply the right thing to do!
I suspect there may be regulations coming over the next few years, and when that happens I know we’ll be ahead of the game because we’re making these considerations now.
If you’re wondering how to tackle this aspect of Just Marketing, tune in to this episode for helpful resources and best practices.

There is a frustrating lack of diversity in marketing.
While the trend is shifting slightly, it’s a change that is way overdue, and there is still progress to be made.
There is a whole world of difference in the people around us, and if you want to be truly inclusive in your marketing, it’s time to start thinking about the diversity of your existing audience, and who you want to be in your audience - and ensure that same diversity is reflected in the images you use to promote your business.
