Juvenalia

Writer/Director Conor O'Toole dropped by to talk about a film he watched "a million" times as a child, Fly Away Home. Fly Away Home is a classic 'girl and her father fly light aircraft across international borders to teach orphaned geese how to migrate' story. Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin are in it. It looks gorgeous and deserves to be part of our nostalgia canon. The talk leads us onto other things like how Conor's relationship to the film now that he's the Jeff Daniels, how we talk to our animals, the Steven Universe film, and Conor's new film Bicycle Thieves: Pumped Up which is at the Galway Film Fleadh from July 22nd to 25th.

Conor is @ConorOToole. You can get tickets for Bicycle Thieves: Pumped Up HERE and we really recommend that you do. Conor is brilliant and it stars a boatload of former Juvenalia guests

PS. There are some dog barks and other assorted animal noises in this one because Alan had to leave his office door open because it was SO WARM. Future listeners, remember the First Warm? This was then. There were a lot more dog barks in it but Alan spent ages editing them out. Sorry if the remaining barks affect your enjoyment of the episode.

Sophie White of The Creep Dive and Mother Of Pod returns to Juvenalia to talk about the extremely dark 1989 horror comedy Heathers. We talk about the chemistry of Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, how dark, dark, super dark this film, how it’s still funny though, about the disastrous 2018 TV reboot, the wonderful music, and about dark teen comedies in general.

Muireann O’Connell from off the telly joins us to talk about the CLASSIC late nineties reality dating show, Streetmate hosted by Davina McCall. It is an absolute trip going back to a pre-Big Brother and social media reality show where nobody knows all the rules of how to be on TV and we had a blast exploring it. We also had lots to say about turn of the century fashion like Hobo and Nope. And if the idea of Hobo and Nope being called Turn Of The Century Fashion made you feel a little bit sick then welcome to Juvenalia! Everything you like is old now and all your favs are problematic.

You can see Muireann on The Six O’Clock Show on Virgin Media One, follow her on instagram @muireann.o and find her excellent podcast Let’s Solve Nothing in all the podcast places.

P.S. We recorded this episode before Davina’s incredibly misjudged comments about women’s safety and men’s mental health otherwise it definitely would have been discussed.
