Tonight I share a couple fo excerpts of African Kiirtan from 'Online Kiirtan for The Universe' on FB - I love the sound of these two kiirtaniyas. Touhouri Bailley is from the Ivory Coast originally and has an amazing blues voice and guitar style. Eustache Otielli is from the Congo and has an incredible finger picking style and the vocal harmonies are wonderful! Listen here.. 

Brahmanii speaks about kiirtan as the most brilliant way to get into your most joyful, soulful side. She speaks abut her experience of kiirtan as something into which you can be absorbed, where all sense of judgement falls away so then the "kirtan plays me", not the other way around. Vinay has a wealth of experience and knowledge to share with us, having practiced Ananda Marga kiirtan and meditation as well as Gestalt therapy well over 40 years. One of the questions I ask him is about how to deal with a common issues among performers and thats, performance anxiety. He makes some very compassionate and practical suggestions. Kamala shares with us her experiences doing Kiirtan and Prabhat Samgiit for Baba. She also talks about Collective Kiirtan at the Mela and how shifted the energy to an incredibly high vibration, where many healings occurred. Another thought provoking topic, related to recent events and Covid was about social discipline and how to see the bigger picture so that a country or region can stay safe, and have a sense of being united.  

I ask the question because you may not have thought about it. I discuss some of the topics that we are going to share with you, our experiences and what you can expect from the Course. As its out third, its also the last of its kind, so would encourage you to just jump in. This Course will give you plenty of food for thought and experiences that you desire in order to really improve and expand your knowledge of kiirtan.       

Its so fascinating to study the structure of Rarhi kiirtan (North east India) as it provides a model for anyone who want to adapt a devotional song to kiirtan. They take a devotional song and adapt it to their kiirtans using the traditional rhythms for example.  To keep the original melody as well as the rhythms of the songs intact while adapting it to the kiirtan is very important I feel. But theres also scope for improvisation, elaboration and embellishment of the original melody in the kiirtan. I am at the very beginning stages adapting Prabhat Samgiit songs to Kiirtan but  its very exciting, and I feel so blessed to have studied Rarhi Kiirtan as its so helpful.  I end by singing Vasanteria agamane kiirtan. Tinku has been a great support and inspiration to me over the years. He's the head man of his village, a very warm, generous person, with a great rapport with others. We unravelled the secret supra aesthetics science of Rarhi Kiirtan together, step by step over the years. Through endless hours of observations, interviews, and learning with the masters we enjoyed each others company. Working with him was one of the best collaborative experiences of my life. We also talk about the social service projects he is doing there including supporting those who have had leprosy, living in an ashram near his village. At the end I play a Baul song, from a concert Tinku sent me recently.    

After a Transcendental Experience on Mayor Island, Viirabhadra  was catapulted into  a new way of Being- a Powerful feeling of Sacredness, Respect and Love for Nature, opening up doors of the mind to receive knowledge in different ways and to communicate with all of life.
