  • Uncovering the history of the Shawnee Indian Mission

Following the discovery of the remains of hundreds of First Nations children at a boarding school in Canada earlier this year, places in the United States started examining their history of Native American residential schools.

In late September, officials in Fairway, Kansas announced they would work with the Shawnee Tribe to look into the history of the Shawnee Indian Mission, which was an Indian boarding school from the 1830s to 1860s on 2,000 acres of Shawnee Tribe land. Juliana Garcia reported that story for the Shawnee Mission Post and joins us for this conversation.

  • LGBTQ foster kids still have few protections in Kansas

In 2019, the Kansas Department for Children and Families told private foster care providers that they had to put LGBTQ foster kids in homes that respected their identities.

But those directions never went anywhere, and the state never finalized a law or a policy for how they should house LGBTQ foster children. Blaise Mesa covers foster care for the Kansas News Service and he reported this story.

  • Winter Is Coming For Kansas City's Unhoused Population

As the weather gets colder, Kansas City's unhoused residents will no longer be able to safely stay outside. The city is planning ahead, but it's no easy feat to serve everyone who might need shelter, food, clothing and medical care. Jodi Fortino has been reporting on the issue.

Like a fly on the wall, there is an artifact at the newly renovated Kansas City Museum that has witnessed some of the wildest times in the city's long and legendary music history. KCUR's Suzanne Hogan, host of the KCUR podcast A People's History of Kansas City, tells us the story of the iconic El Torreon Mirror Ball.

  • Weed And The Other Kind Of Weed

Medical marijuana is opening the door to pain relief and reduced anxiety for many Missourians. But not everyone knows whether or how it can help them.

April Hatch is a registered nurse and member of the Society for Cannabis Clinicians and the American Cannabis Nurses Society. She answered some of those questions on KCUR’s Up to Date with Steve Kraske.

More home gardeners in Kansas City are deciding to fill their yards not with grass, but with native wildflowers — which are better for the environment. But that’s put some of these homeowners in conflict with their neighbors and the city. KCUR reporter Carlos Moreno brings us this story.

  • Missouri Takes Schools To Court Over Mask Mandates

About a month ago, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt sued Columbia Public Schools over the district’s mask mandate, calling it unreasonable and arbitrary. In the same lawsuit, Schmitt sought to block mask mandates in schools across the state.

On Tuesday, a court in Columbia, Missouri, held a hearing in the case. Judge Brouck Jacobs denied Schmitt's motion to apply reverse-class-action status, meaning the attorney general will have to sue each school district individually. Dan Margolies covered that story for KCUR and lends us his legal expertise.
