Kristen Lowry serves as International Orphan Care Consultant for Send Relief, where she advises Southern Baptist missionaries, churches, and partners on best-practice care for orphans and vulnerable children based on biblical principles and emerging research in the field. She also serves as Co-Executive Director of Shelter Yetu in Naivasha, Kenya, where she and her team have helped more than 600 street-connected children find healing and hope as they are reintegrated with safe, loving families. She lives outside of Nairobi, Kenya with her husband, Daniel, and their four children.
For Christian parents, it can feel like an uphill battle to raise loving and compassionate children in an increasingly self-centered, lost world — but there are tangible steps parents can take to build empathy in their little ones.
Kristen Lowry, mother of four and child welfare expert with Send Relief and Shelter Yetu, can share practical ways to foster love and a heart for service in our children, like:

The Christian church is, too often, afraid of this topic. They address it with defensiveness, apprehension and often, misguided theology. Culture is reeling in despair and isolation and yet rather than saying,” work is the remedy - it will provide you the purpose that provides hope, meaning and dignity!” - both the world and the church shout, “let’s take a little more me-time and put the brakes on this career ambition stuff!” It’s time to get back to the Garden of Eden and understand what God created us to do. Christians can have an impact on the Kingdom of God through all the avenues the church seems most interested in these days, but they can have an exponentially more meaningful impact in the MARKETPLACE - if Christians become the leaders in their vocations that cause the world to observe us in awe, wondering what is different about us.

Vermon Pierre (BA, Princeton University; MDiv, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is the lead pastor at Roosevelt Community Church, a diverse multiethnic congregation in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. He is the author of Gospel Shaped Living and a contributor to The New City Catechism Devotional, 15 Things Seminary Couldn't Teach Me, and Revisiting 'Faithful Presence': To Change the World Five Years Later. He and his wife, Dennae, live in downtown Phoenix and have five children.
The Bible describes our relationship with God as a marriage. But what exactly does that mean? Author and pastor Vermon Pierre ushers us into an understanding of that beautiful, lifegiving relationship. By tracing this love story throughout the Bible, Pierre shows how the Lord's beloved love for us can better unite us to one another.
