Manipur, one of the important states in northeast India, practices a variety of theatre compared to other states across the country. In pre-independent India, they did not perform only Bengali drama but concentrated on the presentation of their own original drama and the predominance of Manipuri culture in it was prominent. The country became independent from the British rule. But the independence for which the Indians fought for 200 years unfortunately seemed to be a distant dream. There was the pain of partition, then economically and socially the independent Indian citizens were facing never-faced-before problems. But they also understood what freedom means. Theatre as well as social changed radically. Assamese theatre started its journey towards a new era. With the departure of historical, mythological and religious plays, intense social consciousness started to take a prominent place in Assamese theatre.

After independence, the overall situation of the country also affected Bengali theatre. After Gananatya collapsed, there was an attempt to start a movement called Navanatya. On the other hand, theatre groups focus on one particular theatre persona began to form at different places.
