Zooey Deschanel revealed that she wasn't the first choice for the role of Jovie in the Christmas movie Elf. The role was originally offered to Katie Holmes, but due to a scheduling conflict, Holmes was unable to take the part. Director Jon Favreau had initially told Deschanel she didn't need to audition because Holmes had been cast. After Holmes dropped out, Deschanel was reconsidered for the role and ultimately secured it, with the character's singing ability being tailored to her talents.
